Sleeveless V-neck cable knit.

I really hate modern cricket kit. The naff white fleece sweater, the horrible scratchy polyester shirts that stink of sweat after about 30 seconds, those awful trucker-style caps with SS or C on the side in big letters.

@SLA I totally agree a load of the modern shirts are off the scale ghastly.

I think I vaguely annoy our club president by refusing to buy a club shirt but play in a club polo shirt instead.

Definitely shouldn’t admit this.

My mother knitted me a classic cable jumper with club colours out of some fancy wool one christmas. It is ace and warm. You do have to hand wash it though.

As a keeper, i do not wear it often given i prefer the short sleeve t-shirt.

Never seen a  side with trucker caps, is this also something unique to Cambridge pub leagues? ;)

I know the cable knits look more traditional etc, but other than that I have no idea why you'd prefer to wear one over a good modern jumper. Admittedly there are plenty of terrible modern ones out there though!

Whilst I have a lot of time for the classic cable-knits, they're a lot less practical compared to modern jumpers.

I say all this yet I haven't worn a jumper in probably 10 years so my opinion is pretty invalid :D

Ah that makes more sense, the ill fitting baseball cap problem. I'd be quite in favour of truckers myself, but probably a step too far for most!

I'm curious to know what people perceive to be the downside or "impracticality" with a cable knit sweater are. I have a sleeveless V-neck cable knit in club colours. Its slightly baggy, which is what you want, and it keeps you warm without restricting your ability to bat/bowl/field. Its not itchy or uncomfortable, in fact its a really nice piece of clothing.

It doesn't often get dirty or sweaty so I only have to wash it once or maybe twice a year. it mainly just picks up a red mark from drying and polishing the ball. I only really wear it on the pitch when its properly cold, so probably wear it more in the pub after the game than I do on the actual pitch.

The sleeveless cable knit I have (actual Arran wool) is far warmer than the material they use in the modern jumpers, but the practicalities of keeping it clean are far less convenient.  The modern jumpers are also manufactured with a more streamlined silhouette and are far less clunky.  It's a straight up choice for me based on how cold it is - seriously cold and I'll reach for the cable knit, merely a bit parky and I'll go for the modern sweater.

On caps though, has to be a traditional wool cap for me.  They're the same price as a baseball cap, but more comfortable and look great once worn in and battered by use.

I'm 38 and as such i prefer the cable knit, however the modern fleecy ones do look warmer - although this season i havent had to use any jumpers!!

Without doubt the greatest sleeveless jumper was the Nike one with a zip collar that India wore a few years ago

Nearly impossible to find to buy anymore.
