Hi all,

Ive finally decided i want to have a go at attempting to make my own bat. Im based up in the north east and im really not sure of any batmakers up this way that i could lean on for advice etc.

Obviously to start off with ill be buying a couple of low grade part mades to give me an idea of wether its something i can do before potentially looking at some higher grades.

Anyone know where i can get my hands on some part mades to kick off with? Ive already pulled a lot of info from this very forum so ive a good idea of what tools i need to begin with.

I bought an Aldred bat last year and its kind of indpired me to have a go at my own and was going to email him to see if he can supply me with some partmades but sny other sources would be handy.

Any other advice would be most welcome!!

There are always a few partmades on sale and various bits and pieces (handles, clefts) on eBay from time to time. Id search on there to see if there is anything available.

Thanks for the replies so far. Just getting my kit list together and watching every youtube video i can on batmaking.

I'm also in your neck of the woods, albeit more northern and barcodey than you by the looks of your name. Do Crown in Boldon still make bats?

Kippax and Jedi are probably our closest besides them. I've thought of trying it myself, best of luck to you. May well come to you for advice if I give it a crack.

Ha yeah just on the outskirts of sunderland and durham.

Crown did a weight reduction for me a good few years back but he has been quiet on social media so not sure if hes still going.

Mainly been looking for advice and trying to hoover up as much info as i can to give me a rough idea of what im doing!!

This is definitely a good source of information, loads of talented people on here. Couldn't hurt to drop the likes of Aldred an email and ask for advice, he's said before he likes to give back and nurture the next generation of batmakers.

Make sure you take lots of photos, and let us know if you need any Guinea pigs to test them.

I will be emailing aldred as ive been watching his videos and the bat he made me was top notch.

Hopefully my bats will be good enough to let someone else see them!!

Sure they will mate. Just have to be dogged and keep working away at them. Have a flick through some of the bat making threads on here, some of the early bats look ropey at first but are recovered to looking great by the end - I think the thing that improves most with practice is the time it takes to reach that finished product.

I�m also North Yorkshire/North East. Have slowly been amassing tools, part-mades etc and will get round to giving batmaking a go at some point. No North East batmakers spring to mind. The nearest to me is Nick Nixon in Malton, North Yorkshire.

Definitely recommend giving it a go, to be honest as long as you're fairly handy you can pick up the knowledge required off the internet quite easily too. I found the best bet was to get a plane and get cracking, then deal with any problems as they come up - did my first bat with just one plane and it taught me plenty enough without getting too complicated in terms of tools. Any questions you come up with then the forum is always a good place to find answers.

Grade-wise, just buy low grades - the jump in price isn't worth it! Aldred does do part mades, I've had them from Hunts and H4L before with good results. Best to get in contact with whatever batmaker and chat it through with them as what different makers think of as a partmade can vary quite widely. Has anyone had a partmade off Jedi?

Best of luck with it, you'll have a lot of fun! As edge mentioned, Paul will happily sell you partmades, butterfly willow. I've had 3 from him and they were all great to work with. There are others too but they are all further south. It is good to be able to meet and talk with the batmaker you buy the clefts from, get lots of good advice. Don't forget to post your photos up here!

i dont bother making them now as i have moved on from cricket since retirement.
