Is it too early to start thinking about 2019?
« on: September 17, 2018, 06:22:19 PM »

So for most the 2018 season is over (I actually have a friendly with @t2ylo and @jamesisapayne Sunday) after a pretty average season interested to hear others thoughts on what they can feasibly improve on. My winters used to be football dominated but a pretty serious knee injury put that to bed so I now spend my winters in the gym but much rather be having a net, find facilities and net buddies hard to come by..

I’d like to have regular nets (is there anyone in the South West Bristol area that wants a net buddy?)
Anyone know of any good coaches for 1-2-1s?
Anyone else working on there fitness post season!?
Anyone working on the mental side of the game ala Alastair Cook!?

Yes Dave we know what you meant. Early start to this thread but no time to waste !!

This might not help your own personal game game but last year I read good article from Athers about different mindset in improving and specifically when you are in a rut of form and can't find the next run, God knows we've all been there.

He said you can do one of two things

Completely immerse yourself in your own game, technical improvements or changes, where you are totally focuses on scoring more runs or getting more wickets, in order to help your team.

Second....totally forget your own game and work out what the team needs, forget your average which is no good anyway, forget technical issues and work out to help the team do I need to improve certain areas of my game, more strike rotation, developing new shots, more aggressive , or the opposite...does the team need a more defensive batsman...

I found this really interesting way of looking at batting especially.

I still work on technical issues but generally took the latter option, as I'd lost my opening spot in the team.
So for me the answer was yes keep trying to improve technically but mainly look at my weak areas.
The areas needed to work on are still being worked on but it's def helped me and I've become a vital member of the team after being faced with the scrap head.....or the three's !!  :)

The above may not help you but it's a different way of looking at it. Practice is the only way to improve long term, we see it in the Southern nets.....a year on some guys are getting better, thats what it's all about and it's great to see!

Here is what I am thinking about for 2019:
1. Fitness - I dealt with some horrible cardio fitness this year although my power is up.
2. Defense - I didn't practice defense much last year and paid the price. Good defensive technique allows a batsman to play long.
3. Worst case - Opp has figured out your shots and all fielders are standing to block your shots? Where do you go?
4. Finding gaps - findging gaps without foot movement...sometimes there is just too much movement on the crease which causes problems.
5. Playing spin - get better at defending and scoring against spin. Good defense to prolong the inning.

I agree find both can work depending on the situation but sometimes its difficult to work which to adopt for the situation. Like you I nearly lost my spot opening the batting but managed to get a score after 6/7 games of averaging less than 10 then went into a bit of a purple patch for about a month then lost it again. I'm always keen to get down the nets and improve shame thats not the case for many at the club I play for but been promised that will be different next season (I can only hope!)

My aims for the off season..

1.Work on strength and conditioning until Christmas then put a lot more focus on cardio from Jan onwards
2. Find a way to work on my batting either coaching 1-2-1s find a net buddy
3. Work on my fielding its been horrendous for a few years.

Same! Picked up one in the PDC sale sold one so thinking another one is due. Kit wise probably looking for some matching Gloves and Pads B&S Neon Prysm and maybe Adidas are likely candidates.

I was wondering what people do in the off season to keep busy- and don’t just say winter nets and Netflix and chill!
Personally I miss the camaraderie, and the excitement that another game isn’t far away. Any ideas for a winter sport?

I'm sure @t2ylo  and myself would be game if you're looking for some company mate.

Didn’t play as much as I wanted to this year and so struggled to score runs. But I turned my arm over in desperation a few times which lead to me being quite a key bowler come the end of the season. So I think my winter and 2019 is going to be spent working on that aspect of my game so I can offer something instead of a very slow painful 1 or even worse a duck.

Always thinking about cricket enc looking foreward to the 2019 season fixtures being published and nets.
Never been one for tinkering with my batting tried it once got it wrong and it messed with my head.
Now when things go wrong just think about what I did/matches when I got it right and do that.

I retire to the gym once the season has come to an end to work on strength and stamina over the winter.  I have also found sessions on the punch bag to be very useful for improving the explosive power that you use whilst batting.  I am lucky that I have always loves training so it isn't a problem for me to find the motivation for 5 gym sessions a week. Cricket wise, i start netting once a week from October moving up to two sessions a week from January.

In terms of areas of focus for nets, I am a believer in simply the volume of balls hit rather than obsessing two much over technical points.  I find that starting the season with a clear mind and the confidence that comes with middling thousands of balls over the winter is the best way to hit the ground running in April

Have some time away from the game. Go and play a different sport for a bit.
Taking a break will help keep you hungry for next season and won't make the winter drag on for too long.

Isn't it rare for you to actually play a game?  Surely you are having some time away from everything else, and cricket is your 'different sport' ?  :D

I'm always hungry
