JP Gavan put up the pictures, saying that he was shortening the blade.
1) Does Root not already play with a short blade?
2) Would it not do strange things to the balance by taking a bit off the top and bottom?

Looks like he uses a counterbalance on the top of the handle as well

I don't get the counterbalance thing. Surely a touch more wood at the top of a handle can't make any difference?

I use 3 grips on bats and I always find that the balance and pick up feels much better when i have added 2 more grips than when it comes from the maker with just 1 grips on.  I don't understand why it would be the case - and it could even be a mental thing - but pick up and how something minor can effect it seems to go clouded in mystery

Not really. It changes the balance point to higher up making the pick up better.

^ For me, this trick works with low/mid-low balance point bats and not with mid-high bats like Amplus or XP80 where my timing goes completely off.

Nope, it doesn't.

Nope, it doesn't.

But it can mentally, and that can be a very powerful thing.

As discussed on here, I think a 'counterbalance' is a misnomer, I think it's a comfort/grip location thing for most.

Glad it's not just me then. Would take a lot more than a few grams of wood at the top of the handle the make a difference. A grip or two maybe, but I had a H4L Warbird and always chuckled at the 'counterbalance' claim. Lovely bat all the same though.

Like a few on here, I am sceptical that a tiny amount of weight at the top of the handle can seriously alter the balance point of hefty chunk of wood.

The same would apply to extra grips in terms of their weight relative to the bat
