An oldie - but what to do
« on: January 29, 2019, 01:34:29 PM »

Afternoon all

After a bit of knowledge on the latest stick I've picked up please. Clearly this is a vintage stick, but does anyone know the rough age?

I bought it as a bit of an impulsive purchase really. I've always wanted a Kippax since I first saw one back in the days I played colts cricket (I wanted "one of those bats with the dragon on"). I picked this one up for such a cheap price it would have been silly not to!

I've not measured this myself but it was bought off eBay with the listing 85cm in length, weight 1.1kg.
I anticipate this to be a short handle bat weighing 2lb7 as it is (I'll check both of these assumptions are correct when I get home)

It's in good condition for its age, with just a few cracks on the right handers inside edge. What do I do though? I plan to re-bind the handle and seal the surface cracks.

Shall I refurb around and keep the vintage stickers or get it some of the current Kippax livery to bring it into the 21st century?

Definitely keep those stickers - looks a lovely bat Cam. I often think that modern style bat stickers look rather incongruous on refurbed classic bats like this.

Keep the vintage stickers!

Everything about these older models is lovely.

From time to time, I see an old-timer in our league sporting really old Gray-Nics or CAs and they are awesome bats! Old stickers, fullers shapes, and oiled to a dark brown color.

These are nice bats. I bought a lovely Harrow size vintage Kippax for my son last season with very similar grains to yours. Also had some really eye-catching decals on it - will post pictures later.

Definitely keep them stickers¬

I've never been keen on the new Kippax branding, love the old branding and the dragons.

PS the top of that handle is giving me a bout of trypophobia !  :)

Agree with the previous comments 're the stickers.  Their current branding is dreadful.  GMs branding seemed very well received this year with the clean minimalist look and GN have got their heritage range which look great.  Would be great to see other manufacturers follow suit

Definitely keep the classic look! Hope you've got some old-timey batting pads too, with proper leather straps and buckles.

Is Photobucket working again then?

Okay then, I'm home and here's some specs:

Weight 39.68 ounces (just under 2lb8) naked balde and no grip

Face width: 109.5mm (shhhhh  ;))
Edge at toe: 19mm
Toe in middle: 26mm
Edge at shoulders: 15.5mm
Thickest part of edge: 20.5mm
Peak spine height 59mm

Concaving: none

And for @InternalTraining
Bow: non-existent

I've tapped it up and it feels a fairly solid bit of wood. It's no trampoline by any means but has a reassuring feel of an old faithful. Not one for trying to pump it out the ground but you'll likely get good value for your shots

[Apologies for posting this twice -  meant to post it here rather than on the Vintage bats thread...]

Here is my son's Harrow vintage Kippax Leviathon:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/eJmd2rorDzUQjRQL9

These are definitely some of the best stickers and presentation. I thought it was a devil picture but I now see that these are dragons. I particularly like the old style lettering. It's a shame so few of the bats nowadays have this kind of artwork.

The grains are really nice and it still pings well, although on close inspection I think it might be starting to delaminate. I may do some repair work before next season...
