1-2-1 Coaching
« on: February 19, 2019, 08:04:07 AM »

Yesterday evening I had a 1-2-1 batting coaching session. This is probably the first structured coaching session I've had in 20+ years (I'm in my early 40's). I tried to go into the session with an open mind but to be honest I wasn't too sure what to expect.

The session cost £35 for the hour. Although I knew the coach (as he used to play for the same club) I was still a bit apprehensive. He started off by talking about my strengths and what he remembered of me as a player. He asked me to get into my stance and play a few shadow shots. He went on to ask if I had any trigger movements before the ball was delivered.  He did a 360 degree walk around me while I was in my stance and playing shadow shots.

I hit about half a bag full of balls in the bowling machine and then he started to talk through a few things that he had already noticed. He gave me some pointers on stance, head position and how my feet were working/not working.

Overall it was the most enjoyable hour of cricket practice that I've had in a very long time. I'm a bit of a consistent bat buyer but have to confess that I probably got more out of the hour of coaching than I have done out of most of the £350+ bats I've bought.

I wholeheartedly believe that regular sessions a couple of times a month would make a massive difference to my batting, even at my advanced cricketing age.

I'm never going to stop buying bats but just one coaching session has reignited my love for batting and wanting to improve/work on areas of weakness.

It just goes to show that in cricket you have to have the right people around you and it doesn't take much to spark off that love and interest that is in all of us. Whilst we all love cricket gear we also love to play and nothing beats the excitement of hitting a ball and thinking 'that felt right, I can get better at this'.

Now if only I could find the same enthusiasm for fielding.... and my weeding day a week on Saturday!!!

Excellent JT, proper coaching really does pay off. late on(around 40 too) as overseas coach we had told me to put the bat in between my feet, like KP did, this would cure a consistent fault of over balancing to the off side-and hit a 1000 balls this way.
This did not work and I was back to square 1, a good two seasons of fixing it myself and now the stance  and balance is ok, I did this watching you tube videos of Mark Ramprakash-set up and stance.

I have the satisfaction of doing it myself without a coach and I'm pleased I did this.

However, the chances are a good coach would spot the weakness and know how to correct it, it took me a long time to get it right, old faults still crop up but if they do its back to nets to work on the things I know will work for me.

There's no doubt good coaching is beneficial for club players, and you're never too old to improve your game.

Set up and stance is a massive part of batting and sometimes small observations will work.

I too pick up most tips and techniques from masterclass videos on YouTube. The best thing you can do is video yourself while batting and try to assess yourself against top batsman. When you are able to actually watch yourself you can notice what flaws you have.

@JTtaylor145  fantastic! I have just done the same recently. I am similar age to yourself and have similar story. Recent years been very inconsistent.

Instead of spending money on some bats, I wish I had just done this about 5 years back and had a few touch up sessions before and during the season.

I am thoroughly enjoying it and have changed things about my batting at my age! Looking for some consistent seasons in my twilight! I feel it's been massively beneficial and am really looking forward to applying it in games!  :)

great work  @JTtaylor145 well done!

Having regular sessions I believe is of great benefit even to us in our mid 30s & 40s!

I loved my session at Lords in October and was the best net I have ever experienced I learned so much! I had hoped to continue locally over the winter but I haven't been able to sadly.

I’m assuming it was Holmsey? If so I used to have 1-1 with him when I could, he is fantastic to work alongside as he doesn’t try to change your natural game rather work alongside your talents!

Good guess @tommo256. Can't recommend him highly enough.

Unfortunately, this is the most under appreciated aspect of club cricket. Good (heck any ) coaching is a rarity. Good on you for availing yourself to a coaching session!

The weekly/regular nets are pretty much bs where nobody ever improves and people merrily continue to repeat their mistakes with tired muscles (further developing bad muscle memory). There is no good coaching structure or training programs for club cricketers. Tennis? Golf? Different and enviable story.

This is why I would rather forego weekly rubbish nets and just have the batting sessions with a coach. Unless they are well organized and attended, club nets are a disaster.

Agreed and agreed!

I did very well in my regular matches after sessions with coaches. Skipping regular nets and replacing them with well thought out practice sessions or coaching session led to some very satisfying innings.

I think you will have a lot of fun. :)

May I ask JT..
how did you go about arranging the session - I mean did you need to rent a lane somewhere too or was this part of the package?

I'm not that far from you (geographically) and I've been looking around for coaching options locally. I had a few sessions with a much higher skilled teammate last season and I gained lots of confidence from it. Now I would quite like more training but my teammate has moved on.

Thanks.

Of course @blindowl, happy to help. I am friends on facebook with the said cricket coach. He advertised, I got in touch and hey presto the batting session was booked. He is pretty much fully booked until the start of the season. I didn't have to do anything, I met him at the venue (just outside Newmarket). It was a small but ideal venue, perfect for a bowling machine. If you want to know more I'm more than happy to answer any questions by PM.

Cheers.

Same here, I just feel team nets are not beneficial at all. Especially if like me you don't play 1st XI. The bowling is all over the place.

I've had around 3-4 session now, and I have probably hit more balls in those sessions than I did in the whole of last 2 seasons playing games. Also the muscle memory comment above is very true. I'm now feeling more comfortable in the changes and are starting to feel more natural.

I will be starting nets next week, but will go in with purpose this year. Focus on:

- Disciplined batting - treat it like an innings
- Don't chase way ward balls
- Don't play fancy shots
- Don't get bowled

Treat it like a 10 minute innings. Whereas before I just go in and get comfortable and have ago with no sense of purpose.
