The clowns around say he can bat top 3. Sensible people know he’s a 4/5 and a bloody world class one at that. Sadly, this side is sooooo bad it simply has a load of 6/7’s so there is little choice
It's also the captaincy. It suits some e.g. Kohli/Williamson and doesn't suit others e.g. Root/Tendulkar

Root needs to bat 4 and give up the captaincy. Non captain average 53. Captain average 40.

Who could do it..... the problem is there isn’t anyone (no one sensible anyway)

Broad probably the only logical option tbh

If you have Stokes as VC, why not give it to him, unless there is concern with him having similar issues as Root?

Ed Smith spent his day at the Financial Times Festival. Get rid of this man.

Because Stokes bats, bowls and is the best fielder. Can't have him also being captain.

Fair enough.  If that is the case why make him the VC in the first place.  I always thought the VC position was future captain in training :)

Not exactly known for having a brain on the field! England's last only real strength as a team, in quality of reviews would also be lost  :D

Seemed to have an incredibly good cricketing brain when he did some commentary work for Sky.

Why not give Eoin Morgan a go?

Buttler would be the obvious skipper (presuming YJB or Foakes keeps) if he could just actually score a few runs.

Why not give Eoin Morgan a go?

Couple pages back it was mentioned that Morgan's back might not be up to snuff for test cricket and he was considering giving up the short format also.

Edit: Reading some Aus papers online
Is Ian Chappel (sp) out of his f'ing mind for suggesting Smith for captain on https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket.  Outside of DRS issues and occasional mistake (that he has admitted too) what does Paine need to do get respect from Aus media on his captaincy.  The guy stepped into a difficult situation and has started earning Aus test team the respect.  His keeping is damn good, he has led with humility and I rather see Smith concentrate on his batting.

Is the Aus public of the similar opinion that Paine needs to be replace as captain?  If Aus win or keep the Ashes, would you retire if you were in Paine's shoes, considering that the last Aussie captain to win the Ashes in England was Steve Waugh back in 2001.

I would like him to continue but would understand if he walks away on a high note.

I think Paine has done fantastic as captain. I actually think with the captaincy off smith has been a massive blessing cause it let's him focus on his batting since returning to the side. Giving advice to Paine in the slips on fielding positions and bowling changes has been fantastic. I don't see calls for warner being dropped who has scored less runs then paine.

Totally agree about Paine, he is not the best batsman but solid keeper and skippering is more than just numbers

The Aussies had to do this but does it show the value of not making your best players Captain so they can fulfill their potential ?

I think it very much does and I’m very impressed with their team as a whole

Think Paine deserves a lot of credit
