You could, but no such thing exists.

Smith is a great batsman, but no way the second best in history!

Who's better though?

I know it's hard to compare between eras, and stats don't tell a full story, but Smith's numbers simply don't lie. He's a great batsman! Still a s**t bloke though...

Stats don’t lie over a lengthy period Smith is up there with the best of the modern players, so a modern great

The tricky thing deceiding who is second best is comparing era’s, only a small group averaged in the 60’s

South African players like pollock and Barry Richards could not play because SA had a banned period when they were in their prime

Roy gone but to a good ball, he was got out not got himself out

yes playing with hard hands but he looks to be trying to let the ball come to him which is encouraging, lets back the lad i think he'll turn out alright!

big day for root now though

Yep I think Roy May end up in the middle order but both him and Burns really have to be given a good run

I quite like Burns, he is unorthodox but once again plenty of players have been over the years

The lad has been consistent for Surrey over 5 seasons

I know it's hard to compare between eras, and stats don't tell a full story, but Smith's numbers simply don't lie. He's a great batsman! Still a s**t bloke though...

I don't think stats give a complete picture even within an era.  If you play your home games in batting friendly conditions like Smith does, you are going to have a massive advantage statistically than a guy like Kane Williamson who plays his home games in bowler friendly conditions.

Smith averages 77 in tests in Australia on straight up and down pitches against the Kookaburra ball which is significantly above his career record.  Compare it to someone like Viv Richards who averaged less at home on lively pitches than he did when playing away
