Smith ruled out of the 3rd test. A real shame, but for England they will probably be happy, as twisted as that may sound.

There's a lot of mania about Archer this week, and I hope he does really well- he's certainly very exciting.

However, I'm very uncomfortable about all this 'he's going to win us the Ashes' and 'he's the difference between the sides' stuff in the media and from the England camp. It's still early days, and I'd rather see him burn brightly throughout the rest of the series before proclaiming him the messiah.

I'd like him to get a couple of 5'fers first (and not get overbowled)!

Totally agree! Archer looks to be a fantastic prospect but he needs time to get used to this format at International level!
He also needs to settle in too.

And shame Smith is out for another Tesrt although better safe than sorry to be fair. Plus it gives Smith more time to get over being hit a few times. He is probably strong enough but the extra week or so should help him get straight!
Plus that new kid looked rather promising and a very solid batsman! If he keeps getting runs, will be interesting to see who loses their place in the starting XI!

Don't really get the concern so far with Jofra and his workloads; said before he's used to 50 odd overs across two innings, suspect he only bowled a bit more on Sunday because him and Leach were the obvious two capable of pushing the result.

Labuschagne hit this morning by a Starc bumper in the nets, how about that eh...

The fact that Pope has been called up as cover for Roy rather than, say, Sibley, suggests that Roy's moving down the order for the 3rd test. Presumably that means that Denly will open.

Makes sense to me - Denly looks marginally more capable of grinding out a 30 to see the openers off, and the potential benefit of Roy coming in later on against an older ball and more tired bowlers could be significant

From the press today Roy will open, Root says he wants him to open, Bayliff said he could bat down the order in future.
Easy for us sometimes to pick a team and order from our armchairs with no responsibility. I just find it hard to believe Root genuine thinks Roy has what it takes to be an opening bat, great talent but another middle order player in future I think.

Ollie Pope is potentially one for the future, delighted England have shown consistency bringing him in as cover.

If I was picking the team

I would have the older player opening and get Roy in at 4 where he might be more suited.

Long term I think we have too many allrounders, the best keeper and the best spinner must play (Foakes and leach) then work out who the best batsman is out of butler , bairstow, roy and maybe pope.

Stokes bats 6 as the allrounder. Keeper bats 7.

But England probably will continue as we have been going for some time to come, not much will change I don't think.

Ollie Pope should be starting ahead of Denley, Buttler and Roy.

He averages 60 div one cricket and scores a ton every four games. Exceptional for a 21 year old.

Don't disagree with this save that he is another guy who wants to bat 5 or 6.

Sounds like Australia are making some changes with Harris reportedly coming in for Bancroft and Pattinson in for Siddle

Potential for that benefiting England, Harris by all accounts is also out of nick and his head has been target practise this week in the nets. Siddle is very dependable and used to England conditions having been with Essex for a few years now and bowled very well in the two tests so far. Pattinson is also very good but not sure he will be as economic as Siddle so maybe some more scoring options.

Cummins and Hazelwood are usually fairly economical, I think Pattinsons extra pace will be a welcome addition.

Nothing wrong with changing up at the top of the order either in my opinion, Bancroft was just plodding about, Harris will play with a bit of flare, whether it comes off is another matter but it will be a welcome sight after watching Bancroft trying not to get out for two tests. To be fair, if England had the depth to be making changes with their batting, they would be as well.
