Agree that Anderson is a great bowler and could have made a difference. Personally, I think Root needs to have his head examined. He mismanaged both Woakes and Archer. Under bowling Woakes and over bowling Archer. Was Woakes injured and that was the reason that he was dropped? Why was he so under bowled?

As long as a batsman maintain his fitness and keeps scoring runs, his age does not matter. England needs another "5 year plan" and until a "20 year old phenom" opener surfaces from the system, guys like Denly will be doing a great service for their country for next 2 to 3 years.

Tim Paine is almost 35 , took helm of AUS team when he was 32 (or 33). Not bad at all!

He's not good, either...
Decent gloveman, so so batsman and was put in charge of a sinking ship at a time of crisis.

Were he not Captain, his place would be one of the most vulnerable of the current Australia side.
I think he knows this, which is part of his *grits teeth* charm as a leader, I genuinely believe he feels blessed to be there so makes the most of every minute.

Didn�t Rogers and Voges both come into the test fold for Aus pretty late on and still do a job. Might be wrong but I think they were both older than Denly when they had a proper crack at test cricket.

I do not understand Ian Chappell. One day he calls for replacing Paine was captain and the next he is all praise for him. There is no pleasing ex-players in media. If the game was a draw yesterday knives would be out for Paine to be dropped and removed from captaincy.

Paine�s position has never been under threat. You just had to see the interview with Langer after the yesterday�s match. Langer said, and it was aimed at Warne, that Australia wants the best glove man. It�s the top 6 batsmen�s job to get the runs.

Sometimes that is all you need - a decent player who can bring some stability to a jittery squad. He did his job. Now AUS are on the up-and-up, he is not good enough? This search for perfection is just ridiculous!

For the sake of ordinary joes like Paine who step up in times of sh!!ty crises, I hope he and his side win the series!

England need to decide if they need Root the batsman (excellent), or Root the captain (garbage)....since he clearly can�t do both. Maybe make Butler the captain and let Root go back to scoring a ton of runs?

The issue is Butler shouldn't be in the side, let alone captain. You need someone who's place is guaranteed, which is difficult at the minute! Broad maybe, but not for me. Please not Stokes, we're asking enough of him already.

I don't think Root has had it easy, we've not exactly helped him out with performances. Difficult to set fields and rotate bowlers correctly when we're constantly in the sh*t!

It is indeed difficult for Root, Anderson missing all series made it much harder still.

Paine has shown the modern captain does not need to be the best player but create a team that gives the very best the chance to influence the game.

Don't generally like stats to judge players but sometimes they are telling. Root averages 40 as Captain and over 50 not captain.

Vic Marks has written a good article in the Guardian today which is where I got that stat from.

Indeed. In fact why listen to ex pros who've played at the highest level at all, when you can get all the nonsense you need from club players right here, a lot of whom struggle to average double digits with the bat

A certain Mike Brealey comes to mind from years ago. At the current moment England have only 4 spots (Broad, Stokes, Root, Archer) that are taken, with Burns and Denly continuing based on the last 2 test. Everyone else is on borrowed time. I have not seem Buttler keep much so cannot comment but I thought he was considered a better keeper than Bairstow and neither one of them is close to Foakes which Buttler has said is the standard for keepers in Sri Lanka.

If I have to choose between Buttler and Bairstow, I would go with Buttler, outside of the current Ashes Buttler has better overall score and make him the keeper and bat at 7 and drop Bairstow for Pope or some other middle order batsmen.

I looked at the last 5 test series, since Buttler was added to the test squad:

Total Score/Position Compared to Rest of the Team

Pakistan - 161/1st, Bairstow was 9th with 46 runs from 3 innings
India - 349/1st, Bairstow was 5th with 230 runs from 9 innings
Sri Lanka - 250/2nd, Ben Foakes was first, Bairstow only batted twice for a total of 125
West Indies - 178/2nd, Ben Stokes was first, Bairstow was 7th with 110 runs
Australia - 130/7th, Stokes, Burns, Root, Woakes, Denly, Bairstow ahead of him one place with 178 runs

I am more than willing to listen to both provided both sets are consistent with their comments. Chappell had called for Paine to be replaced with Smith less than 48 hrs ago
