I've used a Bosch random orbital sander that costed me about £60 and has been perfect. I've done over 50 bats with it. I have never had problems with the dust affecting the sanding but more of it just getting everywhere. I just vacuum it up after a few bats. I now have a table top dust extractor that helps a bit. I got my Father in law to attach a wood buffing wheel to an old motor that sits on my bench and that makes a huge difference to the finishing.

All depends what you want tbh,,,the  festool and mirka are a joy to use, both will do the job in a fraction of the time, with a vastly superior finish,,they also have anti vibration etc built in, so no numb hands,,,dust extraction that works, so no breathing the stuff in,,covering your work area,,or more importantly grinding it into the bat,,this is a huge part of achieving a decent finish.

You have to look at the sander orbit,,this is important for the finish,,,lower is better, but won’t remove material as quick,,hence why festool have the rotex.

Honestly I wouldn’t waste my time using anything cheaper than the dewalt,,,it’s not worth the hassle,,
It has a low orbit, built in anti numb hands and a half decent bag for the dust if you don’t want to use a vac

Just to add to my earlier point about only using 240 on refurbs,,,,that’s on bats I’ve made
I charge a little more for other makes based on how poorly I find the original finish, and the extra work needed to sand out marks etc

Totally with you here - would never justify teh expensive ones but would prefer to spend a little more on one that works like you say.

Looks like I'm off shopping in the morning then!
I'm sure the Bosch etc will do the job but happy that people have tried them and have decent recommendations.  Cheers everyone and will get some sheets at the same time!

I use one of these, but they are much cheaper in Australia I paid $220A

This thing runs rings around my previous orbital sander and while not being in the Festool category it's a very good thing and I really rate the foam pad to attach the sanding material to.
I don't go lower than 240grit unless the bat is a complete dog and needs heaps taken off it, then finish with everything up to 1200 and then a polish.
