It was a pleasure to have @Chad in the workshop today. He pressed his first bat and we shaped up this one between us....

Thanks again for having me over @jonny77 - was an absolute pleasure as always to spend time chatting about batmaking and messing around. That one turned out to be an absolute beaut, really lovely shape on it - and I have very minimal credit to take on it - just a wee sand and scrape on my end  :D

Some lovely willow coming through, as well as some nice premade bats, definitely worth a visit!

Still all go even tho it's the end of the season. Getting a few custom orders out around the refurbs etc, including a T20 style bat which was really enjoyable to do!

This is the T20 bat, requested to be as long a handle as possible with a shorter blade as possible. Originally  was 500mm blade/850mm overall. However, customer then requested the angled shoulders, so it's more like a 475mm now i suppose. 2lbs 11.5oz and feels really good...

Next up are two butterfly clefts. The top one based on my JS175 profile but with a 530mm blade/830mm overall. Lovely semi oval handle and pretty clean face. 2lbs 10.5oz.

The bottom one was requested at 2lbs 9oz, which is exactly where it is. From a returning customer who'd purchased a lower middle before and asked for something a touch higher. Resulted in a lovely bat and plenty big enough.

As always, feel free to give your thoughts....

This look great Jonny - Love the JS175!
Butterfly willow offers great value as well as some excellent performance - esp if you get the stain in the hitting zone! And offers some more durability with the stain toward the toe for sure

Thanks mate, really appreciate that. I personally prefer it out of the hitting zone, just aesthetically probably. Not sure I buy into it improving a bats performance if I'm the hitting zone, if it did wouldn't we see pro's clambering for butterfly stains in the middle? 🤔 Just a thought, but obviously with everything its all opinions and own experiences

I was wondering about this as I remember seeing someone describing their butterfly stain in the hitting area as a "dead spot" and not somewhere that the ball absolutely flies off of.

Difference between the stain and a hard bar is causing the confusion I think.

I've not found stained areas to go particularly well, but I had a Chase bat a while ago that had a hard bar in the playing area. After several coats of oil and lots of mallet work it absolutely trampolined off the hard bar.

On a different note, massively looking forward to getting my hands on my new Scott butterfly. Looks absolutely incredible with the black/gold stickers.

Had an aldred with on the hitting zone that went like the clappers - may have been his pressing tho. Thats the only experience I have had with the butterfly stain on the hitting area

Back in the day pros clamouring for butterfly was very much a thing.

Having used/made quite a few butterfly bats I would definitely say it's desirable in the hitting area, similar to how a hard bar can be beneficial. The stain tends to be much harder than the surrounding willow, so I can see why that leads to some people calling it 'dead', but in my experience when well knocked in it's very positive. All anecdata though of course as it's either in or out of the middle so you can't really compare properly!

Just popped in to get my bats from Scott Cricket this morning:
- Weight reduction on my main bat
- Extra binding on a different bat
- Refurb and rehandle on a third bat

Quality work as always.

Had a chance to see some of the bats in stock - some absolute beauties.. a steal at the moment with the sale!!!!

Ha ha, you and me both. Kind customers are very much appreciated, but it doesn't help the waistline! 😆
