We moved into a new place last summer (refurbishment job), and in the basement level there is fair sized storeroom. Part of the agreement was that I could section off part of it as a bat repair room (and eventually bat making). The room is 190x230 so far from giant.

Just wondered if any of those of you who have a bat making shed etc have any tips re set up, clever storage idea etc.

Also looking for help with how I should be got about making and setting up a workbench, vice etc.

You�ll need extraction if it�s that small otherwise you�ll be coughing up sawdust!

Got a vacuum cleaner that attaches to by orbital sander, reckon that will be enough? We have extraction in the room beside so could rig something to that but would be extra work.

I'd look at getting a decent dust extraction unit or shop vac. For s bench I don't think you need anything huge, just enough for a vice etc. Space saving wise, make the most of wall space, even above head space if height permits. Boarding walks etc to put tools, shelving etc is useful obviously.

I think its quite surprising what you can do in a small space.

Maybe a small beer fridge too?! 😁

Afternoon chaps
I actually have two sheds,(just tidied/ re jigged my main one), one has the bats/clefts/tools in, and my press,, my other has a large bandsaw,circular saw,drill press, and loads of tools etc
Both are full to busting
I actually do all my work outside on my patio,(I�ve spent over 35yrs in workshops etc, so working outside is a joy for me)
Soooo, this means any cutting/sanding I do outside,(the dust is not trapped inside)
You need the best dust extraction you can afford if your indoors,,, think m rated if possible.

Bench wise, I have two conventional benches in the sheds, but I actually shape bats on my shave horse, sat down
So no dodgy ankles, my spines on the bats are usually pretty straight and I�m chilled doing the bats.

A half decent vice is important, with a quick release lever if you can

Apart from that it�s mostly shelving etc

Sounds like dust extraction is point number one I need to look at.

You can pick decent ones up on Ebay or similar fairly cheaply. Depends on your needs/space. A decent shop vac will be fine to work just with an orbital sander I'd think. If you're looking at a bandsaw + drum sander + orbital etc then you might need something a bit beefier. A good sander if you haven't got one is a good tool to have for refurbs etc.

I�m in Oslo, so no eBay for me for something that size.

I�ve just an Bosch orbital sander for now, and a connection to hook it to a Hoover

Hook it up to a Hoover that�s better than nothing,,,, but please do your lungs a favour and upgrade when you can.
Most building sites now specify m class extraction for a reason
