Club net issue.
« on: April 21, 2020, 03:22:11 PM »

At our club we have a concrete pad that was laid then a mat over the top for netting on.
The issue with it is the bounce is ridiculous everything just seems to take off even slow bowling. Is there anything available out there like a underlay to reduce the bounce?

The pitches we tend to play on a Saturday are the polar opposite of what we practice on so is quite frustrating.

You can get a “shock pad” laid which your strip will sit on top of - should take some of the sting out of the bounce. Any of the big net installers will do this. Durant, Dura Sport, Total Play etc

Costs about 10k

We have had the same issue & coupled with much heavier use of the square for netting in the batting cage as well we’ve gone for a flicx pitch...
Means we can use more often even if a little damp and hoping for a better bounce.
I will let you know if it works.
One half will be in hard standing net with a mat underneath it & other on practice wicket.

What you say is broadly true but a shockpad won’t cost anywhere near this amount.

The majority of performance comes from the base. In your case concrete means fast with lots of carry. We build systems with aggregate bases for more realism and ease of ongoing maintenance (aggregate is easy top up and relevel in the future. If your concrete pad cracks or breaks up that’s it, dig it out and start again.

Adding a shockpad will alter your ball performance marginally, you might get a bit more of an improvement if you also change the top surface to one with a particularly long/dense pile, this will be especially true if you current carpet is a very short pile

Feel free to drop me a line to discuss

Sorry to highjack a thread but what are consequences of a net flooding for a couple of days?

Depends on the base, and the way the carpets have been secured.

Worst case is the base structure could partially wash away, leaving an uneven playing surface once everything has dried and settled. If this isn't too bad then some remedial works to top up the base aggregate can sort things, if it is serious you may need a completely new base (which realistically means pretty much a new build)

Sometimes the carpets can lift up and settle with ripples or in the wrong place, to relay them is fairly easy.

Always over winter you should take your netting down to store it away from risk of damage from flooding and pests like rabbits (less of a risk as you have security fencing) - There is a chance an old net that already has some organic matter (moss/mould etc) on it may start to rot if exposed to prolonged periods of standing water.

Generally speaking you should be fairly OK once the water subsides, assuming you aren't close to a river and/or you don't have really sandy/loose soil below the base.
