Apologies, saw all leagues mentioned elsewhere in the statement and assumed

Haha no need to apologise mate, to be honest I don't really understand why they haven't already followed WEPL 😂 Delaying the inevitable no doubt

I heard that's they want to start in July put heard it's having umpire's who of a age that's the sticking point and also players are also in the risk areas are as well

If the league does go ahead I think it will be the 2nd and 3rd teams that are the ones that really get hit. Most clubs will be able to put out 1 team but the lower XI's would lose numbers once players filter up.

@Neon Cricket @thecord

Statement on behalf of:
Courage West of England Premier League
Bristol and District Cricket League supported by Martin Berrill Sports
Gloucestershire County Cricket League sponsored by Greene King IPA
Monmouth Scientific Somerset Cricket League
Wiltshire Cricket League sponsored by Neon Cricket

Date: 19 May 2020

Subject: 2020 league cricket season

The playing of recreational cricket in England and Wales is currently suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The latest information from the ECB on using nets and outdoor spaces can be found here.

The five leagues involved in the West of England cricket pyramid held a video meeting recently to discuss plans for the 2020 season. All five leagues are in agreement on the following points:

1. The health and wellbeing of our communities is far more important than games of cricket and this will be the guiding principle throughout any decisions made regarding the 2020 season.
2. Recreational cricket will not be able to resume until the government and the ECB have given the approval for it to do so.
3. All leagues are focussed on providing their clubs with the opportunity to play meaningful and competitive cricket matches if and when the opportunity arises to do so. Leagues are prepared to be creative to make best use of any windows of opportunity available to play the game noting that there will be restrictions such as ground availability and ground sharing issues to be considered.
4. There is acknowledgement that fair notice will need to be given to clubs as to when a resumption of cricket will occur.
5. No penalties will be incurred by clubs who are unable to use their facilities due to no fault of their own or for clubs unable to field teams due to ongoing Covid-19 concerns.

In addition to the above agreed principles the Courage West of England Premier League, the Bristol & District Cricket League, the Gloucestershire County Cricket League and the Monmouth Scientific Somerset Cricket League have decided that there will be no promotion or relegation within, in to, or out of their leagues based on any fixtures played in 2020.

There is plenty of information and support for cricket clubs that can be found on your respective County Cricket Board website:

Gloucestershire Cricket Board | Somerset Cricket Board | Wiltshire Cricket

All five leagues urge clubs, players and volunteers to continue to adhere to all government guidelines at all times. This is the only way that we will be able to get back to playing the game we all love at the earliest opportunity that it is safe to do so.

Agreed as most of the umpires in EAPL and div 1 are senior in age. To be honest though at that level all the players should be able to umpire to a decent standard as as it looks likely that there will be only 1 up or down does it matter if half the games for example don’t have a league umpire??

The league I play in announced back in April before the original start date of the season that if any cricket did go ahead, there would be no promotion or relegation.  Personally, I think this was a sensible decision.  Once the start of the season was deplayed, there couldn't be a fair playing field and it seems that of we can play at all, we should be concentrating on that rather than squabbling about promotion or relegation issues.

The early call also removed the issue over overseas players.  If promotion and relegation was still on the cards, I have no doubt some clubs would have wasted money on an overseas for part of the season

No promotion or relegation in TVL this year - at best looking at friendly games towards the end of the season based on the existing fixture list

I don't see why they shouldn't run a soft touch league competition with team umpires anyway. It is still worth winning a league trophy even if you don't get promoted?

Bloody wish our club was like that. As an opening bat it’s normally the bowlers who umpire first and they tend to have a different view to LBW for example than most others. One of our players is Especially trigger happy so much so we don’t let him very often as it’s that bad. Luckily we have our own umpire most of the time these days.

They guy has nailed it! Give your teammates out a couple of times and they don't ask you to do it again  ;). First rule they teach you in self umpiring cricket school

Recreational cricket stands more chance from what I've read into it.

Yes it's ridiculous. I've nothing againat football or the EPL, but football is a major contact sport where social distancing is impossible. So why can't the ECB get its act in gear and get some domestic pro cricket up and running. Lots of matches have such small crowds that you could even have social distancing
spectators there.

Yes it looks like there is a glimmer recreational cricket has a better chance of starting a bit earlier. More relaxation of the regs from June 1st has got to help

There is still a very real problem of some players not wanting to play this year but that's an individual decision.

I think for those still hoping to get half(ish) of a season there is still a chance....
