2020 season
« on: May 24, 2020, 01:26:38 PM »

Don’t see a 2020 your season thread (for obvious reasons) so here goes.

Luck enough to play my first game of the season Today. Ground out a pretty horrible 34 off 60 odd as we were 12-4 early on. Limped to 155 in our 30 overs.

They chased it for 7 down with a couple of overs to spare but picked up 4-32 and it was coming out ok.

Great to just be back out there though. :D

Congratulations on playing some cricket! Just a little jealous.

What is this "2020 season" you speak of?

We've had a few say they won't bother if they impose some of the proposed restrictions  such as no changing facilities,  so even if we do get some cricket I don't think we'll  be putting out a full strength  side. :(

What country is that @Kulli? Not UK I guess (I think you mentioned Prague once before)? Any restrictions e.g. no saliva?

Norway.
A whole pile of restrictions, no saliva on the ball, keeper not allowed closer to the stumps than 1m.

Wow. How many teams in the Norway league?

I have a suggestion for the saliva business. Now, I'm not a bowler, but I've just been experimenting with alternatives to saliva for shining an old ball. I compared a bit of hand sanitiser, an antiviral surface cleaner, and regular saliva. I get exactly the same results for all three treatments and one side of the ball shines up nicely. Not sure about using it for spinners to improve their grip as I'm not sure how that's done, but I don't see why not.

So, have any real bowlers tried this kind of thing yet? Does it work for you? I don't see why the umpire shouldn't provide a bottle of suitable liquid spray that the captain or bowler could administer once an over, or whatever.

There must be an alternative (non bodily fluid) that would do the same job?

How did the keeper go to spinners 1m back? Did any stumpings get missed?
That just seems a bit much if you ask me (I am a keeper).

Got to keep 2m away. If a few stumping get missed so what.. surely if you are mad keen to play it doesn’t really matter ? It won’t be competitive so just friendly stuff

Like one of the lads below, can’t see many sides putting anything but Sunday friendly standard sides out if at all this season

Yes, that's possible. But would it make shining the ball too easy? And what about spinners who use saliva to get a better grip, don't they?

There’s about 70 odd clubs.

Had less of an effect than I anticipated (I’m an offie) but when batting it definitely made me more confident in getting out to the spinners.

The recommended social distancing here has been reduced form 2 to 1m

That maybe the case but my reasoning purely is the likelihood of the transmission of the virus from batsman to keeper is very very negligible when the batsman is fully kitted up plus helmet etc...and the government have already said it can't be transferred by sweat. Keeper is already approx 1m back when you take into account the crease and behind the stumps.

I realise you are going to say it isn't a risk worth taking but I simply don't see the risk that's all.

Nah, each to their own.

Competitive cricket can’t be played with any realistic outcome though while many players won’t play, turns it into a mockery. Friendlies though, If people want too pay, crack on

I don't anticipate it having much of an effect. Most of the time we play without a specialist keeper anyway, and the bloke that fills in stands at least 1m back to the spinners anyway.

It's still close enough that if someone dances down the track and misses it, they might as well keep walking.
