In truth, this is why the skipper should be at slip or mid off where possible. Point is not a good place to try and lead a side from.

Ideally keeper is a skipper. If not then yeah Slips, Covers or Midwicket.

We talked about it at practice yesterday. We think the correct way of doing things, given that we can't do anything about them calling our opener back, was to tell their skipper that we didn't know if he hit it, therefore stick with the umpire's decision and he's out. The mistake we made was debating the decision for too long and letting the previous incident cloud our judgement. If it was a match that had nothing riding on it then maybe we should have called him back. But as they are battling relegation then it isn't fair on the other teams at the bottom.
Then have a beer at the end of the match (which a few of us did tbf).

I'm glad it was their umpire giving the decisions because otherwise it might have got uglier. Looking at the league newsletter I've noticed there are a few instances of teams being docked points. They don't say the reasons other than player infraction. It's an amateur league ffs.

Only our second win of the season today. We had the oppo 3-3 but they recovered to 210-ish.
Got another run out from the deep.

Then batted 30-something overs for 54 as we chased it down with an over to spare 4 down.

Their seconds didn’t have a game so dropped a couple of players down which makes it even sweeter. They locked their changing room at drinks and had a very heated team talk, then spent the last 20 overs arguing amongst themselves in the field as they had 6 men on the boundary when we needed 5 an over.

Typically, they had one bloke complain all day that it doesn’t turn on an Astro (it does, you have to actually put revs on it)
We get spinners like this every year as we play on Astro. They bowl all year on very dodgy tracks and rely on one going underground or jagging off the pitch, then complain as they have to actually put revs on the ball to make it do something.

Their skipper also did that pathetic “pretend to throw it at you” when you pat it back to them despite not leaving the crease. He then spent the rest of the innings telling his guys to “send us upstairs”. The prospect of a 60mph ‘bouncer’ left me shaking in my boots as I’m sure you can understand.

Also had a bloke tell me how slowly I was batting and how awful my wagon wheel was going to look for about an hour. Love games where they just slag you off all game, certainly makes me bat better and makes those handshakes at the end hilarious.

My season was cut short thursday night, freakish injury whilst doing keeping/fielding drills, yoof throws a wild one in, I throw my hand up for the international sign of "rubbish throw" and it just flicked the tip of  glove on the little finger which ended up with my finger looking like a Z, luckily worcester warriors club doctors was there and he reset it, X-ray confirmed no fracture but that's me done now.

My lad got 37 off 15 balls today in a mad dash to try to win a T20 game which was entertaining, just got him a @jonny77 Scott bat and it's an absolute gun! ridiculous for a "grade 3" it's like a trampoline.

Sadly I had one of those games which left a sour taste in the mouth. It was meant to be a happy reunion which went wrong. I have changed clubs this year and on Saturday we played against my old team. We batted first, had a mini collapse leaving us at 13-3 when I walked in. I was greeted with general banter. It was very nice and friendly and I was absolutely loving it. After some rebuilding I threw my wicket away leaving our best batsman stranded and the middle/lower order exposed. Too often we have had the last 5 wickets fall like a pack of cards so our best batsman decided to shield the other guy and what followed was a typical test match style approach; the gun bat facing the first 4 balls, taking a single of the 5th ball. Another wicket fell and one of our younger players walked in. There was a lot of banter on field (as expected) and lots of babysitting comments. Our gun bat got to 50 and then lost his wicket trying to accelerate exposing the lower order. Then it happened. Opposition's 15 yr old wicket keeper took the banter too far and commented on our young player's mother and the chap lost it. We had some heated arguments in the middle. I was leg umpiring and I tried to ask both of them to just carry on. Our innings folded quickly. In the break, the young guy was still quite upset and the others decided to give it back to the opposition on the field. I tried to reason but it wasnt to much avail. What followed on the field was pretty poor. Their wicket keeper and my very good friend opened the batting for the oppo. There was a lot of chatter aimed at both of them. The kid got out early and I thought the foul chatter would stop there but it didnt. I almost lost it myself seeing personal age related comments being made against my friend. In hindsight, I should have spoken up. We eventually lost the match. There really should be rules about all this sledging business. Its really upsetting to see teenagers and kids in their 20s cross all limits in the name of sledging!

There are rules but when there are no neutral umpires it's fairly difficult to uphold those rules. My experience is that if an incident is reported to the league then it becomes an Our Word Against Theirs scenario. Points deductions only get handed out if there is a pattern of poor behaviour by a side or somebody sticks their hand up and takes the blame.

i thought that there was a zero tolerance policy with sledging? it simply isnt enforced though as umpires dont get involved.

fortunately, in our league it rarely gets beyond jovial banter as most of us know we arent very good so whats the point. on the odd occasion it has captains have stepped in and shut it down. i can only remember a handful of ocaasions when its gone too far - ironically against my former club where one moron couldnt control his mouth and got a bit personal.

As a batsmen i have never minded it too much as it gets me going and i play better, a wise man once told me if they have resorted to verbals they have given up on using the ball.

i find the constant appealing more annoying at the moment, and the absolute certainty from all 11 that its absolutely 100% plumb every time. add in the reactions and cheating accusations when they arent given out it becomes a very frustrating day.

The sledging is really getting me down or maybe I am now too much of an over protective Dad. I had a shock call up to the 1s  - only been 15 years and have to say really enjoyed it. Apart from the bruise thats now appearing to cover the whole of my right leg. The game was very one sided as we only had 9 players so all comments etc. were on the jovial side although they went very quiet when we got off to a great start to our reply.

disappointing to hear that my 13 and 14 year old sons both had verbals and "banter" in their game playing in our 2s from players older enough to know better. I am concerned it may out them and some of our other U14 players off from playing.

It’s rampant, and getting worse. Yesterday I opened the batting and got sledged because I didn’t walk due to not actually being anywhere near the ball I supposedly hit. He got in my face, called me a ****ing cheat, and I bit back, which wasn’t my proudest moment.

After I was out I went out to umpire. The opening bowler came back on, and first ball he bowled a wide, to which he exploded, saying it was right on the return crease.  I replied by saying it may have been  on the line, but it was down the leg side. Next over he bowled a no-ball, and again exploded, calling me a cheat, saying he never bowls no balls. Next he went up for an LBW shout, which pitched about 2 feet outside leg stump and hit the batter on the thigh. Again I got accused of being a cheat, so I laughed at him and suggested that he brush up on the rules. It was only then that his captain told him to stop being an imbecile.

Last week 2nd XI captain saw me for the first time bowling, and that in the league match, therefore he set up the field he thought will work, but this Saturday he'd sorted it out!
As I bowl on the stumps or outside the off, field was set up accordingly, perfectly.
Someone said something about the field setting, I replied by saying, captain is setting it up.
I only concentrated on my run up mark and bowling line and length.
No talking to anyone, except once ball was hit in the air and fell very short off the fielder, to his comment, I said, you can't be everywhere on the field.
Game was tense as one can expect but in very well spirit.

It happened that our veteran batsman, Joshi, West Indian, Antigua, is in very good terms with their veteran batsman.
When it rained Sharma introduced us.
This meant that there was pressure for best behaviour in the match, in and off the field, I felt.
Sharma is former pro, played with many internationals.
Best part of him if that he's very friendly and humble.
