So I had just net 2nd XI players, thanks goodness,  bowling went well, to my big relief!
I had to think hard, as had no nets at all, only one game last Saturday, to find out that I was bowling slower than I normally do, while I thought I was bowling at the right pace.
Batted as well, just to get in the groove for tomorrow, happy with it.

Had a very tight finish in today's game.
A 45 overs match became 40 overs.
We scored 118 in 38 overs.
They finished on 104 in 39 over!
Went on at 11, faced 7 deliveries scored 10,all the scoring shots were dabs through the slips, to medium pacers🙂
Bowled last 5 of the 10 overs, 1 for 15.
All in all a good friendly match, which was as tense as like a league game! Good practice...

Another poor preseason result today. Lost by 9 wickets defending a poor 138.

Top scored with 31 from 28. Wasn’t trying to hit out, but kept hitting gaps and picking up boundaries. Was caught at extra cover slicing a drive. Bowled OK at best, took the end with the short straight and off side boundary and kept being slapped over extra, then a few wides and a dodgy call fo 5 wides that the guy pretty much kicked for 4. We weren’t at the races, absolute shocker and need to put in a much better showing next week as the league season begins.

As a positive, from facing our new Kiwi overseas all of the opposition seamers felt military medium. Got a proper working over from him Thursday, so looking forward to earning my 1s spot back and seeing what he can do on a grass deck

A couple of firsts for me today. Back to back 50’s for the first time ever, and also hit my first ever six!

We bowled first and they got 210. Their number 8 hit a very frustrating 80-odd, there was at least 10 occasions were he sliced one just over a fielder/ swung and missed with the ball just missing.

I opened up and we were 20-4 before I’d faced 10 balls. Me and our number 6 rebuilt to about 120-ish before he was plumb LBW. Wickets kept falling until we were 150-8 when I finally brought up my 50. Was a slow innings (though, I did have long periods without the strike). Flat batted a six over midwicket for the first time ever! Needed about run a ball from the last 7 overs. We were 8 down so I just asked our youngster to stay with me. I pushed too hard on a 2 and was just run out which was bloody annoying as I think I could have chased it.

We needed up 25 short.

On a negative note, my gun BB split at the toe. I’ve had it 2.5 years but only just started using it this season. Bit disappointed that it’s gone after 6 games. Will be taking it to hunts county bats this week to try and save it.

We lost our first league game to Bedminster 2nd XI yesterday. We batted first and managed to scrape 239/9 off our 45. I managed 33 off 40 batting at 5. Coach gave me some tips on Tuesday to stop planting my foot and have to say I feel much better for it. Disappointed to get out when I did dragging it on when trying to set up a platform to kick on.

Bedminster were 136-0 in reply before losing a couple of wickets and chasing down a revised total with a few overs to go.

Onto next week.

Played my first Sunday game in quite a while today and had my first bat of the season and. Must say something very relaxing about Sunday cricket compared to sat. Both league cricket for us but just something feels calmer.

Anyway batting at 4 openers made a good start and both got to 30odd before both being out within a couple of overs, started off facing a young leggie who gave it a decent amount of rip but was very slow and wasn’t afraid to give it some air so took my time to play myself in. Felt great to get first run of the season and then first boundary and managed to before I really knew it bring up my 50 and then was out for 68 from 68 chopping one on. Shame as I felt in great form.

Young lads then came in and do what they do and got us up to 233/8 from 40.

Said young lads then opened the bowling. One a leggie the other a seam bowler but short run and just moves it both ways at a friendly but quick enough pace. And they rushed through 20 overs and they were 73/4 after 20. I managed to bag 3 catches in cover. After that we rotated bowling and a mix of crap getting wickets and Good bowling saw us home easily in the end.

Good start for our Sunday side of who should be looking to push for promotion this year I think.

Played my first game today, a Sunday friendly.

Loss the toss and put in the field. They scored 197 off 46 overs.

I opened the batting and scored 24 before playing on to a spinner, which was annoying as I was timing it surprisingly nicely. The opposition got progressively more obnoxious, which was disappointing due to the fact that it’s a Sunday friendly. Anyway, we lost a steady stream of wickets throughout our 35 overs, and ended up 180-9.

Played yesterday; we batted first and got off to a solid start but the middle order collapsed a bit and we ended 215 all out which in reality was about 60 short of par!
I opened the bowling for us and bowled 10 overs 1-48, got a couple to turn which is always a positive for me as a spinner who claims not to turn it!
They chased it down in 33 overs so in grand scheme was happy with my figures just disappointed to lose

Had a game yesterday at Worcester Park CC, Sunday 1XI, strong team, so had a good game again for the preparation for the league, they made 194 in 40 overs. I bowled 5 overs for 20-1,again last 5 of the 10 overs.
We scored 112 ao, I made 10no, at no10, atm 45 runs with 3 not outs and 3 wickets for 70 in 3 games, while 1st bowling stint is to forget, which wasn't good at all!

Started the Saturday league season with a win which is always nice! Opened the bowling and bowled very poorly, far too full with far too many full tosses. At one stage they were on around 90-3 off 20 overs but thanks to regular wickets including two tailenders for me to pad my figures with when I came back on, we got them to around 140 for 9 before their final wicket partnership kept us out in the field for the final 10 overs taking them up to 160 odd.

In reply we were in almost exactly the same position at the 20 over mark except we'd only lost 2 wickets and both of their best bowlers had used up their overs. Then on came two fairly ordinary slow spinners who took 7 wickets between them, batting at 8 I scored a very slow 12* trying to shepard the tail as we scraped home by one wicket.

"ordinary slow spinners"
Yesterday, that left hander over the wicket, was playing 1st game in 2 years.
1st H few deliveres were "ordinary", but then picked up his line and length and took 3 wickets!

Didn't realise that bowling a decent line and length qualified you as a special talent these days 😂 I'll need to start talking up our slow-medium seam bowlers more.

Hahaha Jim,
Batters can't resist the temptation to hit out to those "slow ordinary bowlers", while they play carefully to those line and length bowlers and wait for bad delivery or change bowlers.

I'm familiar with the concept of s*** gets wickets, but "fairly ordinary" isn't an unfair description of that type of bowling.
