Cost of an artificial wicket?
« on: May 18, 2021, 04:06:20 PM »

Just wondering if anyone here has recently had installed an artificial wicket (single strip) on their square? What we looking at for cost?

We've recently been getting quite a few enquiries from people wanting to rent out our ground for evening 20/20s, Last Man Stands (or something very similar), etc and we are wondering if it could pay for itself in 2-3 years?

The only places I know with artificial strips on their squares are actively looking at removing them.
Could you not play such games on used wickets?

We could but thought an artificial strip would be good to host casual evening matches on.

Maybe? Have to say we regularly hire a range of pitches for evening cricket but there's definitely a reluctance to play on astro from both our players and opposition. You'd probably have to hire it out at a significant discount compared to a real pitch to get many takers.

Playing on an old weekend pitch >>>> playing on astro

They do seem to have a bit of a stigma. Most of us would always prefer to be playing on a decent grass wicket I'm sure. Having said that, I would rather play on astro than a complete lottery of a wicket and they are probably a good option for T20 games too when you want to ensure the ball is coming on nicely.

We paid £8,700 to have one installed in early 2016.  Used for junior fixtures at under 13 and below

We have one on our square and its never actually fulfilled its purpose:

Can't use when wet as slippery
Can't wear spikes
Bounces a lot higher than our grass pitches
Junior leagues now want games played on grass
Upkeep and repairs
people play on it when games not on and then run all over square!

We only use it for practice sessions and we are looking at removing it and getting back a new laid grass pitch as our square is small

We've put in a new wicket this year. Costs about 3000gbp (Notts) and then maybe 1k for the putting in process. Mind you we've already had the underlayer installed there. It's a compressed hardcore and not concrete. Our old wicket was in place for about 5 seasons. Had plenty of wear on it. Only the landing marks on both sides for right arm over bowlers started to tear up. Beside that it was a mighty fine wicket.

In our leagues, Austria T20 and 40 overs, it held up fine. We have had 2 or 3 matches per weekend day on it and one training sessino per week from April through September. I'd say it did end up paying for itself.

Process as per below, should have take. A day but plant machinery didn’t turn up until 2:30 so I missed the stage where they came back and laid the second layer of hardcore and matting to finish it off.

Thanks for all the feedback and especially @Ayrtek Cricket for the photos. The replies have given me plenty to think about.
