Hi all,
My question is how many layers of binding can be wrapped around a handle to fatten it up?
I like the idea of adding binding to thicken a handle as less weight than grips but just testing the water if 2,3 or more layers of binding over top of binding is a good idea or not?

From memory I think an extra layer is about 0.5 to 1oz? That seems a fair whack of weight to add to the handle so presumably would change the balance up a lot.

How thin is the handle that you're thinking about 3 layers of binding?

The bat is Salix pod, came with chevron grip.
I�m thinking of defo 1 later if binding and a spiral grip over the top. Or add the chevron then spiral grip.
But would 2 layers binding be better than 2 grips.
The bat just feels a tad heavier than I hoped (2lb 9.5)
So hoping thicker handle and adding some weight on the handle end will make it feel that ounce or so lighter.

Have you thought about trying some medical strapping tape round the handle first? Much easier to apply and then remove and adjust if you want to play about with it.

I use it to thicken up skinny handles and it works a treat.

Ah yes, forgot about that one.
An extra layer of binding worked well on another bat. I always thought the twine was lighter than any double grip combo, but you�ve proved me wrong.
It�s just the annoying nobbley bit at the end of the Salix handle that�s bothering me too.
So want to pad out so I can put my top hand at the very top of the handle.
Plus the hope for the lighter pickup.
Any other tips on how to trick the mind and eyes into losing bat weight?
I�ve left it in the house when the heating is on and that�s helped a bit.
New bat so I imagined the oil/wax will settle in soon.

Potentially some lead golf handle tape near the top of the bat so it changes the balance a little more?

Nuclear option is paying for weight reduction and rebalance.

Nah it�s only a niggley half ounce. I think the mix of strapping and 2 grips will be fine.
It�s only potential horizontal shots that might cause slight discomfort but I�ll get used to it with lots of practice I�m sure. Every bat is a little bit quirky at first. Will look up the golf tape though, not heard that one.

No worries mate, just relaying advice I've been given in the past!

I've got far too many bats and they're all far too nice for someone of my very limited ability!

In all honesty adding a counterweight, like lead tape does improve the pickup when your bat is cocked. I did this on a low density H4L bat that was massive, exceed the bat gauge! But I thought it was a bit toe heavy. I got 2 tons after I addes the lead tape, (got the tons in friendlies) but haven't had a 50 since I sold it!

Might be about my lack of netting but try things out and get what you feel is a great pickup! May mean getting another bat, but ultimately grade and weight doesnt really matter, you are using it and you need something that feels like an extension to your body that doesn't impact the way you would play shots..

Some may think this is waffle but just my opinion.

I have two different thicknesses of binding. Thin one adds 3/4 of an oz, thicker one 1 1/4oz. Obviously i suppose this would fluctuate slightly depending on the thickness of the handle. My chevron grips weigh 1 3/4oz roughly.

I prefer double binding as think 2 grips feels a little spongy, but that's just my preference.

I blame the bat gauge too lol.
I feel the same as you about pickiness though mate. Bats aren�t cheap and we work hard for them. You want things to be 2nd nature. And we�ve all got that favourite we had years ago before it broke to compare everything too.
Probably doesn�t help that I�ve just got used to another new lightweight bat I�ve been nurturing since Autumn.
Even though it�s preprepared by Salix I think I�ll knock it in for a good 2-3 hours. (Seam marks when tapped up)
Which can help reduce a bit of weight too. I think 2 grips as I planned and it�s a keeper for sure.
I have a GM icon 2,7 on the way too as a net bat. So I�ll have 2,7 2,8 2,9 to choose from (couldn�t resist a Salix Black Friday deal) and hoping to play very regularly forever more now I�m having a career change. Time to think about me a lot more in life.

I don't mean this to come across rude but I do have to chuckle at statements like this.
0.5oz (14g) in a 2lb 9.5 bat = 1%

But I totally understand handles not feeling quite right in the hands, and will tinker with tape under the grip to get if feeling just right.
