Hi everyone,
If you enjoy friendly cricket at some beautiful grounds, may I interest you in some fixtures that my club, the Phene Philanderers, has coming up over the next couple of months?
The club was founded in 1968 (at the Phene Arms, which has an unfortunate claim to fame of more recently apparently featuring in Made In Chelsea!) and has a colourful and prestigious history, with an enviable fixture list which is mainly concentrated in the area south of Guildford, near the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our regular matches, some of which have been held for 40 to 50 years, tend to be against village “social” teams with a mixture of generations and skills and with picturesque, well-kept grounds. We also have a regular weekend tour to Dorset, which is played at Plush and Bride Vale, two of the most beautiful cricket pitches in England.
Unfortunately the general decline in “friendly” cricket over recent years is hitting the club particularly hard this season; a slowly diminishing group of core players has led to us having to cancel some fixtures and if this trend continues it jeopardises the very future of the club.
If you would be interested in playing in any of our remaining matches, either as a one-off or more regularly, please DM me. Any standard or age is welcome, the emphasis is very much on enjoyment, though winning is always a bonus. There are no membership subs, just sufficient match fees to cover expenses.
Fixtures below (all “away” in Surrey unless otherwise stated - we are a wandering club)
Sunday 17th July - Shackleford
Sunday 24th July - Peper Harow
Saturday 6th August - Abinger Hammer
Sunday 7th August - Chelsea Arts Club (@ Stonor Park nr Henley)
Monday (bank holiday) 29th August - Pirbright
Sunday 4th September - Ebernoe (W Sussex)
Saturday 10th September - Plush (Dorset tour)
Sunday 11th September - Bride Vale (Dorset tour)
I look forward to hearing from you.
