Eng vs Sri Lanka Test series
« on: August 20, 2024, 12:02:41 PM »

Finally the crappy hit and giggle stuff is done and we can focus on red ball cricket.

Stokes and Crawley are out, Pope is the new leader, Lawrence is opening the batting. Potts is back.

England have got a pretty unbalanced side, but more bowlers is never a bad thing.

Once Stokes was injured I would have gone about things in a different way but I am not Bazball...

So, weather permitting, it should be a good week.

Sri Lanka are a bit under done but have a lot of experience in their team. Matthews had an incredible series when he was last here and they are playing with nothing to loose.

Winning away tests appears very hard however...

If nothing else, Lawrence opening could be hugely fun. Not what I'd have done but I do love watching him whack it.

Some thoughts on the Sri Lankan test series...

Sri Lanka haven't toured the UK in a very long time. I am not even sure they know how they will go.
England's bowling attack looks pretty impressive. Potts and Atkinson should be Eng bowlers for a long time similar to Bashir. They all need to work on their batting though.

This could well be Woakes' last test series. Enjoy it. He has been the ultimate Duncan Fletcher multi dimensional player who worked hard to increase his pace as a bowler and could have batted in the top 6 for most teams.

I have no idea how Pope will go as captain, but in Duckett and Root he has experienced heads around him. Plus Stokes will be around, which I think will be helpful for him.

Let's hope the sun comes out.

Also who doesn't love Mark Wood bowling...

Potts has definitely worked on his batting since his last run in the England side. Ton for Durham this year!

Good toss to loose today I think for Ollie Pope.
Sri Lanka are batting first.

Looks like Karunaratne is using the SG Armour gloves - the first time I've seen a pro using one in a match, I think?

Maybe has Wood on the mind?  :D

You could see the SL openers were out of touch, missing the edges on a number of shots. But they improved over the first 20mins, and eventually they managed to find their bats' edges....

Grim old start for Sri Lanka.
Fingers crossed for a better contest this afternoon.

Interesting....Rathnayake got hit on the hand by Wood, and after physio interval, he has switched his MIDS gloves to the SG Armour gloves....wonder how much of a difference in protection is afforded by these gloves?.....

....and next over by Bash, back to MIDS gloves??? Maybe difficult to grip the bat with the armour gloves?

Remains to be seen if he’s working on his bowling…

England's little tribute to Thorpe - playing on in the dark....in exotic Manchester!

Pretty good first day for England bowling oppo out for under 250 and then not losing a wicket ( although Lawrence did his best to run himself out)

First time we have seen Jamie smith miss a chance that we all know Foakes would have taken but going to have to know this will happen and be thankful today it was whoever it was and not Smith, Head, Kohli, Babar etc.

Can only play what’s in front of you I guess
