I have nerves every time I bat, as Liam says if you put away a ball early in your innings it releases a lot of pressure. Now I'm confident to go in and face first ball, I think if you worry a lot at the crease you're not focused on the main thing which is batting so just go in and play like you have nothing to lose. Put the bad ball away and bat overs as the runs will come - like the saying goes, you can't score runs in the pavilion!

Liam, try thinking about one thing only otherise your mind becomes cluttered. It works for me but everyone is different. Try just watching the ball in the nets, all of a sudden you are off the mark !! If your main priority is to get of the mark you will play at balls that you should leave.

truth is mentality has become so big in cricket in terms of sports psycholigists will tell you that is the main difference between you and a player playing first class were we think about it they just do it.

our team has a sports shrink and i for one do listen but understand very little.(thick)

i think it best to just not think and go with the flow

Be mentally lazy between balls or overs. There was an awesome article on cricinfo with Sachin about concentration. If anyone can find it read it!

if you are a nervous person then there is no way of changing that, learn to work with it instead of fighting against it. theres no point in hoping for a miracle cure! just channel all that nervous energy in to concentration.

also, since cricket is a passtime for us (as opposed to a job) we shouldnt really get nervous, theres no REAL pressure on us while we play (like trying to earn a living)... just consider this next time you play because if you cant enjoy it then your not gonna be any good when these nerves get the better of you

another good thing i have found is to think to myself "i am going to do my best, and if the bowler gets me out i can leave the pitch with my head held high, but as long as i dont give my wicket away thats the main thing" i think thats a good mental approach, more people should try it

  • Clear your mind, stay still and watch the ball

I have to say opening is very different to going in at 4 - when you open you are in and you get on with it, at 4 you are thinking about batting but not able to make a difference until the second wichet falls - personally 4 is my least favourite place to bat (other than below 6!) (I usually bat at 3 but have opened a lot).
The best way around it is not to get fully padded up and stay around people who are relaxed - not people who are also very tense. Have a couple of throw downs to feel the bat on ball and have a cup of tea and enjoy your team mates batting. When it is your turn to bat, follow Kieron's advice above (although I try to watch the ball in the bowlers hand from the start of his run up, not just at the moment of release).
Confedence makes it easier - but in general nerves are good to get the blood flowing.

back on topic now this not for everbody but thung that got me over the fear of quick bowlers was after i got hit a few times in various sports(plus nearly puncturing a lung in one) after that thought what the hell its going to happen eventually so i don't fear it plus buzz will agree with you much prefer opening as you just go straight out sitting there not knowing if your going in in the 1st over or 30th is annoying

Practice, Practice, Practice! Before your innings just listen to your iPod or read a magazine

i read somewhere that you should not read anything before going to bat as your eyes are used to close focus and not the focus required to see the ball coming

I think about my cricket way too much. If you're relaxed at the crease I don't think you will get yourself out as you're not thinking "where am I going to hit this?" Like I said, bat the overs and the runs will come

The only thing i think about is if the London Pride will taste good after the game, Then i bat, Once i get out, I will analyse my performance, See where it could of been better, Just for the next time i bat.
