The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

I started playing club cricket last year so the first bat I got was a plain bat sent to me from Pakistan. Following that my first bat of my will was GN Powerbow 3 Star :(

my first full sized bat was/is a County Caerulex (the size 3 DF Ian Botham Attack seems to have dissapeared during the last 20 years!) - back when County did bats with lovely old school stickers... I have one in my parents loft still in mint condition, but in the mean time, see the below. I got sponsored for a while at school so had to take the stickers off, however I put the only one I saved on in the end... my first shot in anger with this was a leg glance for 6 - and I scored my first fifty and first 5 hundreds with this lovely weapon... I don't think it is in bad nick for an 18 year old bat!
