Balance issue
« on: July 03, 2010, 08:40:52 AM »

I don't know where I've got it from but it's predominantly in the early stages of my innings but if I play on the front foot to a spinner or medium pacer then my back foot rises off the floor a little, so from side on it must look like I'm balancing on my front foot. I've been stumped first ball this year playing a forward defence to a leggie even if I'm stood well in my crease.

Any ideas? (Buzz) ;)

are you over striding with your front foot and reaching for the ball?
I have to go out, so will thing about it and revert!

Don't think so, I don't normally get a big stride in.

i do it as well, especially when i play to the leg side, i end up going on my front leg and my back leg comes up, it's frustrating!

Ok, usually you topple over to a spinner when you have got the length wrong, either by being beaten in the flight or by going forward to a ball you could play back to.

The key is to play the ball late, but also not to over commit, you will have a moment to react as the ball drops or dips (depending on the quality of the spinner - a really good spinner will make the ball dip and shape late) so ensure you don't play the ball outside your natural zone - hold your shape - and definitely don't push at the ball.

Two ways I have seen of playing this (I am sure there are others) are the VVS way (probably the best player of spin of his generation) or the Duncan Fletcher "forward press" way - Tresco is the ultimate exponent of this method.
VVS plays the ball amazingly late with wonderfully quick wrists (a bit like AB De Villiers or Michael Clarke).
I have posted comments elsewhere about playing spin, so going back to your balance issue, practice shadow batting, but leeding with your head and letting you foot move second, you will then play with the bent front leg, aluded to above.
I hope that makes sence, ask if it doesn't or disagree!

Try not to over commit to early, lead with you head not your front foot and hit the ball under your eyes

that's exactly what I meant! And the simplist way of getting a good batting technique.

Also, the fact you are leading with your head means hitting it under your eyes, should mean your playing in front of your pad thus avoiding most bat pads
