Help with a new bat
« on: July 19, 2010, 06:52:51 AM »

Hello guys i live in perth and the new cricket season is approaching fast.
I am looking for a new bat with specific details but i need some help of what to buy.
Im looking for a light SH around the 2.7lbs mark with a good pick up, i want a bat that has a little concave although none is fine, but the key point is i want a bat that has is unforgiving and that you don't always have to find the middle for it to come of well, i have a GM icon original and i find that if i do not fully middle it the ball does not travel to far. So maybe a long middled thick bat with a good pickup.

I am looking for suggestions of a good bat and don't really mind what brand it is.
Sorry for the long description and thanks for any advice as i am having a hard time.

Cheers Keenan

I think you mean you want a "forgiving" bat rather than an unforgiving bat!

Given you are in Perth, I would try and get to Meulemans and see if they have anything you like...
http://www.meulemans.com.au/

I suspect all these things depend on budget, but to send a bat from the uk would cost about £30+ so you may be better off getting something more local and given Meulemans claim to have some screaming cats and Aussie Bradbury's in stock - I am sure you won't go too far wrong with one of them.

yes thats what i meant sorry

i was at meulemans today and they do have some awesome bradburys if you are willing to pay $700
meulemans is a great store and stock great bats but it is cheaper to buy from the uk even with the postage, which is a pain

I see your point, the exchange rate is really working in your favour at the moment - £200 is AU$350 - AU$700 is £400 and a total rip off for a bat!!! (unless it is truly exceptional)

In which case look at the custom bats on offer here and see who will send you a bat - I think, from memory that Redback, SAF, Talisman and a few others on this forum will send a bat to Aus (please corrent me if I am wrong) and use the exchange rate (weak pound) to your advantage! Email/call them direct and see what they say...

Not sure you will here a bad word about Newbery Bats on this forum!

Speak to Talisman who has been known to supply Newbery kit or Asad at Uzi sports.

can anyone recommend a newbery that is like all the information above, light, good pickup and a forgiving bat, maybe a Newbery Grizzly.
Also could anyone recommend a Bradbury.

Cheers for the help

To be honest mate there not a heap of bats out there that when you miss the middle will still travel. And even though id trust Talisman and SAF, if possible id reallly reccomend trying too go into Meulemans to have a look.

From everything ive heard and seen in Australia this year, Gray Nicolls have been by far the best brand of the year. Have a look at the Powerbow, and looking in your range , the 750 which Meulemans sell might be a go for you, or an Ignite 750. Also have a look at what you can in Puma in that range. If after all of that you cant find anything then feel free to contact one of the mentioned above, but as I said originally, I dont know a heap of bats where the balls going to fly when you dont middle it.

Yes i would love to have a bat that flies even when you dont hit the middle but i atleast want a bat that you dont have to hit the dead center of the bat in the middle for it to fly, that is why i am hoping for a bat with little concaving (eg Newbery Grizzly)

I have been to meulemans twice this week and yes they supply very good bats but i dont have $700 to spend and i dont want to pay $450 for a grade 2 bat when i can buy a grade A willow bat for much less.

check out www.sscricket.com    I have had 2 bats made to my specifications being a Limited Edition and a Heritage and both bats are simply outstanding and the best value for money you can by in my opinion      It is a matter of personal preference and whilst buying on line means you can't pick up the bat before you buy - I have been very impressed and bought my youngest son a Thrasher Size 5 and two fellow team mates have also subsequently bought SS bats
