Bats?
« on: November 06, 2010, 11:43:54 AM »

Hi All,

Really sorry if this is wasting people's time.......but how excatly do i know if i need a bat with a high middle or low middle? in the past, ive just brought any bat that i think looks good, and now my cricket is developing and im playing higher standard, i think i need to choose with a bit more details, i play on the front & back foot and i dont know what would best suit me?

Thanks in advance for your help

Matt

Matt welcome to the show!

This is a really good question. The first thing I would to is look at your current/favourite bat and see where the most wear on the bat blade - this will give you the best indication. If the most wear is near the bottom, then a lower middle and higher up the bat a higher middle.
The next thing to do is consider what type of putches you usually play on - slow and low = low middle fast and bouncy = high middle.

Next you should think about the standard of cricket you play, if you are playing against tall quick bowlers, then a higher middle will help, but if you are facing slow or medium trundlers - which is most cricket a mid to low middle will be better.

Finally where the middle on the bat is will have an impact on the pick up of the bat. So be aware that typically a low middle bat wont feel in the shop as nice as a high middled bat, but don't be put off by that.
Usually in England I would suggest you should go for a middle to lower middled bat, because of the pitches we have.
Also while I am on that subject, when choosing a new bat you should typically try to do this with your gloves on so you get a good feel for the bat in your hands as you would in the middle.
Hope that helps

Thanks a lot! helped alot, last season i used a newbery uzi and a CA ( not sure on the model ) i never paid any attention to the middle, i just picked it up, it felt right - and it scored me runs......i play at a high standard now so yes there will be tall fast bowlers, but on the otherhand the wickets are quite low to start off with then as the summer goes on they get harder etc, would you suggest it would be a good idea to start off with a lower middle bat then as the pitches get harder use a bat with a higher middle?

Personally I would stick to one bat until it breaks or goes soft - usually about 1500-2000runs/net sessions worth, but different people like different things and change bats more frequently. I suspect the CA will have a lower middle and the Uzi a mid to higher middle - but as bat with a shorter blade and longer handle will pick up differnetly.

Which bat scored you more runs?

Correction thanks to Cover_Drive below - CA bats have a mid to higher middle as well

be warned - joining this forum will have a significantly negative impact on your bank balance and you will end up with at least 3 bats by the start of the season !!! as most members will testify.

My advice is you save up and by a custom bat from one of the forum sponsors who will do you a really good bat. Failing that negotiate aggressively in the forsale/swap section...!!

I agree, I think 3 is at the lower end of bat purchasing!! I`m at 3 already and expecting at least 2 more.

Matt, Buzz posts are very informative and I hope they help you.

Just to correct most of the CA bats are high middle bat, hence, there pick up is very light

Also don't get fooled by brands and there models.

thanks Cover Drive - I stand corrected - (not really surprising in this case as I have never owned a CA bat!)
