Going a little crazy...advice
« on: November 16, 2010, 01:45:46 PM »

Right then, first time poster so take it easy chaps  :)

I am currently in the market for a new bat. Never been the sort to go for off the shelf as from what I know, you are going to get a much better bat/experience by going with the guys who know what they are talking about, as opposed to a sales rep trying to flog me the bats they have in stock. I am having to buy all my gear from scratch again, even down to a bag! So you can imagine how much it's costing me!

I am looking at getting an M&H Custom (Distinctinon cleft with Retro stickers) but going to wait until the season starts for that. What with Xmas coming up, don't want to give the bank manage/missus a heart attack. So in the meantime, looking to get myself a custom for about the £200 mark. Specs are as follows...

2lb10
Oval Handle
Low Middle (meaty as I can get, along the lines of Distinction)
Bat between 4-6 (keeper and depends on the score etc)
I'm a bit of a hitter, love a good drive and cut.

I have spoken to Warsop, and they can do me a Venom Pro for £220 with what I'm after. But I have read about SAF, H4L, Tallisman etc. I don't have much experience with custom bats so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

Plenty to choose from as you've mentioned. H4L is doing a deal for a custom @ £150, mr saf usually around the £180. Talisman would sort u out a deal for a bat or with all the kit u require. Mr bulldog usually has bats on offer. Lekkas are £150. Off forum, a few of us have got a blueroom bat wich cost £200 match ready delivered. So plenty available, your spoilt for choice.

Thanks mate I will do some digging.

The mention of the phrase "choice is endless" is a big enough headache. I have been leaning towards the Warsop but have read reviews that they are not so great. Although Pete Hosk's review was a pearler.

What keeping gear you using? I've not played for a couple of years and have to buy it all over again. Don't mind spending the money, just knowing what's good as times have changed etc.

No mate sorry, I am also shopping for the rest of the gear now. It's just the M&H I may look at next year.

Just having a nose at the Blueroom site. Does anyone have any thoughts on Warsop?

What's the best way to get hold of Tallisman?

You can try and PM him, although that's a method with varying success. Just shout that you want his help in this thread is likely the best bet.

I will put a thread up asking for contact.

Thanks for your advice fellas, it's very hard to find a decent cricket forum which is pretty active.

I'm picking up some Kook silver gloves as I used some at the end of last season and they were quality. This is all costing me a fortune.

Tell me about it mate. My boss will murder me when she see's my internet history from this morning.

Still, all worth it eh? It's just confusing when you see all these quality bat makers about with some great reviews and you just not sure what to go with. Blueroom looks very promising though thanks

Whereabouts in the country are you fella?  The batmakers around are scattered throughout our fair nation.  It may be worth getting in touch with the closest one and seeing if you can go down and get one to your specs.  I'm in Hertfordshire so not a million miles away from Warsop, and they are very good bats.  But also consider: Redback, H4L, Talisman, Newbery, SAF, Nixon, Blue Room, Vantage, Black Cat etc.  Lots to consider and lots of great bats.  For £200 you should get an absolute gun - good luck!

Welcome on board jnc86, I`m very much a newbie too but it`s a great board to part of, loads of good and interesting discussions. I can only re-iterate how joining this board can seriously damage your wallet though.

I, like you, have been scouting around for bats. I`ve got a Chase Finback and a Salix Daemon but am still on the look out for another too. I`m very impressed with the Vantage range and, although, I`m still undecided, I keep going back to them. But, whichever you choose, I`m sure you`ll get a good bat and a good deal.

PS I`m a keeper too and also need to some new gloves and pads for next season - more expense!!!

I'm based in Shrewsbury, not much round here...however. Have just spoken to Rob Pack @ Blueroom for a chat. The bloke is a gent. Am going to go down for a visit and see what we can do. Judging by his employment history the guy knows what he is doing.

smilingjeff - have you seen the new kook and puma gear? Not quite sure I want to stretch to a ton for some kangaroo Brad Haddin's but the Silvers are always quality, and Puma pads tend to be the best from experience.

Thanks to everyone for your advice too. think I may need an evening job by the looks of it...
