I've had 2 generations of Cannon - one from the late 80's/early 90's and then a Cannon Original from 1998. Both were awesome - the later one is the only bat I ever scored a century with (in fact i scored 2, back to back) and had a good 5-6 seasons out of it.

The reason I bought it was because GM were the first manufacturer to offer factory knocked in bats, and at the time I needed a bat pronto, with no time for knocking in.

I replaced it in 2005 with a Hero Original, which unfortunately was a plank, and I've not had another GM since.

As others have mentioned though, great to have such a prominent brand on board.

One suggestion for Edward, which I'm sure some forum members would be up for - retro releases! with the good old green and blue stickers from the 80's!

One of the great things about GM having cricketing heritage is that there is the opportuniy for nostalgia. My early cricket memories are watching the likes of Gatting with using a Maestro

Great question posed about future of GM and great to have a straight, clear answer from Edward. I for one, think GM are getting it right. In terms of big brands they stand out head and shoulders above the rest for consistent quality. Spent a lot of time this winter shopping around for a new bat and kept coming back to GM. The information they make available about their bats is second to none and their willingness to contribute positively and honestly to forums is a breath of fresh air. Never had a GM before but invested in an Icon Original and after 3 sessions in the nets I'm pretty sure it's the best bat I've ever used.

Have you considered the benefits of opening a factory in Melbourne Australia?

GN did this in the 70's and GN have strangled all competition here in Oz over the years with something like half of the batsmen on any given club side using GN bats.

Open up a small factory where you can manufacture some bats and also do repairs and refurbs.

You would get a massive share of the market if you did this.

Go on...you know you want to!

PS GN as a result has been popular here (although I work with a former GN sponsored test player who hated his GN bats and advises everyone was using bats made by Julian anyway - with GN stickers)

I disagree.

GM's absolute expertise is in our unique DXM processes and in the accrued skill of our craftsmen and women in Nottingham.

Talk to any specialist outlet in Australia and they will tell you that the brand that is on the move upwards is GM because of the superiority and consistency of GM bats.

I do not know of any other mainstream brand who is expanding their own manufacture, indeed I believe the opposite to be the case that other mainstream brands have either contracted their own manufacture or have transferred it all to India

I work in a fairly large cricket retailer in Australia and I see no benefit of opening a factory in Melbourne. I mean it would be nice, but given the costs wouldnt be worth it. I mean Avalon source all the bats there and as far as repairs or refurbs specialists are hired all over the country, I.E - Simon (who did the repairs for Impala) does all the repairs for GM in sydney.

GM is on the way up definetly. Shane Watson has definetly increased that. GMs only small issue is I believe it cost a bit more to get the bats from all the way over from england and for that reason maybe not as much is ordered. I know for example in the GM Flare there was hardly any going around anywhere in sydney for alot of the cricket season. There were millions of apex's around but they just didnt really sell

Who ever is feeding you that false info is pissing in your pocket.

At your average cricket shop (GCCC, Players Edge etc) the Gray Nicolls display of bats takes up nearly half the shop. FMD, even the Kooka, Slaz and Puma bats are far more numerous than GM.

At GCCC, the GM bat display is wedged in between the Bradbury and teh Adidas bats and it is a "blink you shall miss it" experience.

Yes, I am a GM die hard, but that is because I wanted something that everyone else WASN'T using.

I respect the fact that it is cost prohibitive to open up another factory in Oz when India is so much cheaper, but being an GM fan, I would have loved a more localised Southern Hemisphere service.

So, if I want a weight reduction and refurb, where do I send my bats?

No, our people do not make a habit of doing that...

What I said was that GM is "the brand that is on the move upwards", I did not say - because it isn't - that GM is the biggest brand in Oz. Yet.

GM has been rebuilding through excellent new distributors in Sydney for the past couple of years. 2010/2009 we are some 80% up. Suggest you talk to GCCC about their GM prospects for 2011.

Just a thought. With Shane Watson's form and the publicity he is giving GM not only in Aus but around the world, this will increase demand for GM bats, particularly Flare with younger children (most influenced) and therefore more people will try and get hold of these bats. So the demand has already been created which means GM does not have to open a factory in Aus to increase awareness and produce more bats/softs and as Edward has said that GM has moved up 80%.

I don't know if I've worded that in a way people can understand... If you can please say if I am right or wrong :L

I think Edward and his team will have costed out opening a new factory, but when you have a fantastic CNC machine or two and a leading factory in the uk, with transport links having "shrunk" the world, I am not sure it will make economic sense to open a whole new factory in Aus. Not that I have any idea about the market over there, it's all a bit upside down for me

. But the point is - Australia is an enormous place and given there is a load of shipping to get a bat anywhere their anyway, they might as well be made here, plus lets keep the Aussie Dollars flowing over to the UK!

I think the idea was really tongue in cheek, of course it doesnt make sense economically or otherwise to open production here, just wishful thinking of fans! It would be good to have some localised service though. Im pleased to hear GM is 80% up on prior year, although whether that is as impressive as it sounds depends on the base number of course. All the best to GM.
