It's been a couple of weeks since Davies went public with the fact he is gay, not seen a thread on the topic. Personally I say fair play to him, gonna get some banter from the oppo though!!! what does everyone think of the subject??? society seems ready but is the sports world????
-
There was a topic on this a couple of weeks ago and a few people started to make silly comments so it was locked.
-
There was a topic and it's was locked and one person banned so best to leave it mate
-
fair play, I see we are still behind the times, shame!!!
-
No the majority were fine just one or two that were not so best not to start it again
-
Best have this locked again admins before the idiots start crawling out from under their Daily Mail for a rant
-
I've unlocked this as it is a subject worth discussing in a mature manner, should anyone feel the need to preach or be stupid then I'll be happy to ban them and lock if forced to.
I think it is a good, honest and brave move by him to come out, I see no need to hide his sexuality from his team mates or supporters, it has no impact on his game so best to be open about. I wonder if it may have affected his game in the past in any way and if this unburdening might improve him form enough to bring him back into the England frame again.
-
actually I think it will have a positive effect as he wont have the threat of a red top "sting" coming his way. This way he was in control
-
Dont see why its an issue....i dont feel the need to come out and say im not gay
-
It seems positive for sure. But if he ever plays against the Aussies, then what are the odds that they will sledge his 'preferences' in an attempt to throw his concentration when he comes out to bat?
-
I think at his level it will be accepted fairly well as it should be however at club level etc etc i just don't think the same level of acceptance is around but i guess its progression and the more sportsmen or sportswomen that come out the better it will be.
-

Tom - we all know you're getting married to cover up your preferences big boy! We have seen the way you skip up to bowl, very dainty action!! ;)
-
I used to play hockey with a gay bloke did not bother me in the slightest plus lots of curious women in ladies hockey I found when I coached it
-
haha weve got a lad whos come out at our club doesnt make him any different to any of the other lads tho just gets a ribbing for being a bristol city fan!
-

nail on the head
I shall come out and confess i love my wife
In this world does it realy matter????

Agreed -the aussies are going to enjoy this.
Personally, couldnt care less
-
Fair play Mike, I know you deleted the last thread as the idiots came out the woods for it.
I think it's a top move by Steven. You may have a point regarding it possibly affecting his game, that sort of pressure would surely play on your mind. I have friends that are gay, and I know the feelings they went through before coming out to friends and family, never mind the press and international cricket circuit. It's a shame that, although it's 2011, the majority of the society we live in continue to see this as a taboo subject.
I think he is a class player

It may not be an issue for you Tom, but it clearly was for him. He was clearly finding it a burden not to be open about his sexuality. good on him I say, and if he feel better then good for him. Also think it was very harsh that he was dropped in favour prior- who looks a completely different player in comparison to the test match version! ???
-
lots of curious women in ladies hockey I found when I coached it
why did you give it up?Im gonna get myself on a hockey coaching course...
-
If the Aussies try to put him off by sledging him for his preferences, (the Aussies are pretty ruthless) then he can get them back when he is keeping by making comments to throw their concentration when they are taking their guard! That would be funny!!!
Being gay in this day and age is so blooming common and accepted in as many places as Visa credit cards!
My nephew is gay and came out when he was 16 or 17! Plus the missus has friends who are gay - really doesn't feel strange, and I never feel uncomfortable in their company! In fact, at the risk of generalising, gay men tend to be more extrovert and have bigger personalities than more straight guys! Or at least I have found that in my experience!
-
i just fail to see why he feels the need to say it :/
-
Maybe cos he feels that he has lived a lie (pretending to be straight) and feels he needs to be honest and open - so that he can be himself!??
-
And that he wants to be accepted for who he is?
-
I have found they are always the first to shout a round in so ok by me
-

If someone makes a big deal about things they're making a rod for their own back, I think you would find Aussie sledges a more focussed on the players ability rather than anything else, but don't let that stop your anti-Australian posts Pete.
-
I saw his interview on 'this morning,' and he said he hoped that coming out would help others playing the sport become more comfortable in being open about their sexuality. And for that, i really respect the guy.
-
Aussie sledges are about everything did one Aussie not enquire about bothams wife and kids plus others weight?
Those were nothing to do with there ability
-
No way the Australians would participate in Sexual vilification as they could find themselves in hot water back in Australia as this type of behavior is extremely frowned upon here in Australia.
Who cares what Steve Davies sexual preference is as long as he is a good sport and cricketer.
-
If the last major census was correct and 1% of the population is gay then there must be a fair few cricketers who have not come out in many different countries so it would be good if a high profile case like this helps more to be open.
Sledging is stupid, puerile and sometimes even funny but has nothing to do with being fair or residing within the spirit of the game, gay comments will always be used to taunt people as a rise.
-
It was going around that the press got hold of it and were going to break the story anyway, hence the interview with the Telegraph.
Nothing wrong with it at all, and Pete's right, he would have some funny comebacks when he is keeping...just wonder if he is the type of player to do that. Always seemed very quiet in the field
-

I personally think seldging has very few boundaries. Aussies are the most notorius but that doesnt mean other teams arent equally as bad if not worse. I, for one, wasnt being anti-australian as i am probably one of the most pro Australian person you have ever met as the experience i had when i traveled along the east cost was amazing.
The key thing to remember is sledging is only for the middle if it continues off the field then its a problem. Otherwise, if someone tries to have a go at me i just join in and sledge myself in such a that the other guy thinks whatever i say to him now i cant beat what he has just said to himself so they shut up.
-
Keepers by there very nature have big mouths so he would have a few comebacks saved up I'm sure
But if your good enough you don't need to sledge as the great micheal holding says I did not talk to the batsmen as I never needed to I let the ball do the talking and the batsmen do the walking

VERY very true. When iwas in brisbane the, church in the city center, 2 seconds walk from the ANZ square was packed with people standing outside on a Sunday. It was beautiful to see even though i am a Muslim :D
-
Either way, whether Aussies would sledge him is moot, Davies is about half as good as Prior and won't play international games, played a couplemof ODI's this summer and did panic, Prior is a jet and couldn't believe he was overlooked initially.

Quite a persuasive piece that.

I understand how hard it is for him. One of my best mates came out to me as the first person outside his family. It wasn't a surprise to us though and likewise I suspect the same is true within his circle of acquaintances.
