Title: My first refurb!
Post by: tim2000s on March 08, 2011, 09:59:35 AM
I acquired an MS Fusion SSH weighing in at 2lb 11oz from a forum member via the forum. It was in an okay condition on delivery, but really, really wanted a refurb. I thought that this should be doable, so went on and refurbed. The pictures show before, pre-stirckering and after, and thanks to Kieron of Bulldog for providing the stickers. I hope that the bat lives up to your brand, at least in looks. It's now (by stickers at least) a Growler fitted with a hammer edge!

"Why Bulldog?" some of you may ask. Because I rather like the look of these stickers!

ive got a few questions regarding sanding

only experiance ive had with sanding etc is metal polishing and painting.

where u work you way through the grades

like start of with 120 and finish of with 1200 grit.

would the same thing aply to wood to get smooth finish ?

is it done by hand or a machine sander etc?

I used to be a cabinate maker so know a litle bit. You do go through the grades never try and skip more than 2 grades

Yes, gp through the grades. Used an orbital sander on the front to get the worst out with a coarse grade and finished with fine by hand then wire wool.

It's usually 20 to 25 quid. Not overly complicated, but certainly some work.

I saw, and took that advice. Wire wool and beeswax based polish in a tiny amount.

Have you fitted the Combi grip with the thicker end as the top hand on purpose?

Buzz pointed that out to me. No, forgot which way I had it when I had it rolled up so just put it on, and that was the way it came out. Strangely, it feels rather comfortable to hold that way.

Got the hairdryer out on the original armour face and stickers, they came off a treat. Then stuck it in the workmate and used an orbital sander on the front. Started at Coarse grade paper and then went through medium to fine. Had to remove a few seam marks and cherries and tried to get rid of surface cracking.

Used the same technique on the edges and toe, then used a rubber block with paper in to do the back and also the corners, again going through the grades.

Fairly straightforward, just a bit time consuming, and sanding the back by hand is a reasonable amount of effort.

Nice job mate! I am in the process of refurbing one of mine as well. Your tips will come in very handy!

I have finished sanding the back, still waiting for the beeswax to arrive in the mail. Did you say you used steel wool to spread it around on the back? I was going to use a hairdryer and some cloth...

In that instance Simmy, you need to remove the stickers against the grain. Of course, across the grain and slowly is recommended.

yer figguered that out half way through!

hardest thing is removing fiberglass tape thats been on for about 4 years!

not the clear sheet awfull fiberglass it just disintergrates in ur hand lol and clogs up the sand paper cos it turns into glue

Dave is probably the best person to answer this question, but I'd warm it a little using my hands and then only apply a small amount of beeswax using steel wool. I'd use steel wool as it's a final, very fine, abrasive and this will work better for polishing than a cloth will. All you are really doing with a cloth is buffing.

Did some searching on the forum and found these tips from Andy for finishing

Btw, what's the difference between polishing and buffing?

Dave, if you have any tips, do share...

Anyone on here use this stuff?  Lord Sheraton Beeswax balsam

http://lordsheraton.co.uk/beeswax.html

Has both beeswax and cold-pressed linseed oil, plus some pine turpentine (to clean up the wood i suppose?)

Anyway, might this be a cheaper alternative to Salix bat wax?
