Morning all,
Predictions for the game and who you are supporting? Seeing as my family come from Sri Lanka, I will be supporting SL :)
I guess this thread would provide an opportunity for a sort-of 'running commentary' on the game.
Cheers,
-
I just want to see a good game. I hope Sri Lanka don't bottle it...
-
WTF is Dhoni doing picking Sreesanth? Fuming!!!
-
Sri Lanka must be happy with that move
-
Sri Lanka must be happy with that move
I'd fancy my chances against Sreesanth...
-
Love the confidence of Sanga... "whatever we get will be enough"
-
Sri Lanka has the best national anthem ever!
-
Is it me or do the Sri Lankans seem like an Asian version of Australia. They always strike me as better fielders (than India/Pakistan) and they always seem a well drilled side, whoever plays. They rarely seem to perform poorly and don't strike me as fragile mentally as India/Pakistan, who seem to lose the plot sometimes when the pressure is on.
-
I know Reds..!!! :D
And Nick, your comparison is a valid point. We will see how the game turns out though I feel - there isn't much pressure on SL :) cause everyone in India has said they've won already, and so there is ridiculous pressure on them (bottling is possible) - could be a SL chance to seize the iniative and capitalise on India's nervousness, if there is any... :)
-
It certainly droned and on and on and on......... the entire crowd was twitching....I was twitching
Sri Lanka has the best national anthem ever!
-
india bang up for this, cagey start by SL as they feel their way into the game!
-
India mentally fragile? Maybe in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Not anymore.
Sri Lanka mentally stronger? They should try playing outside Asia once in a while...
-
Previn I think it is one of the longest National Anthems :-[ but at least it's upbeat :D
And Tom, do we know if CKS is wearing the Ayrtek?
Easy Jeet.... ;) - All I said as that there would be a lot of pressure on them...
Damn 1 down :(
Ignore the Ayrtek Question as he is in now so I will see :)
-
hope so mate we will find out now
-
:D
-
Sri Lanka, that is all.
-

Sreesanth bowling well mate ;)

Jeet, SL just beat Australia in a one day series in Australia this year. Don't be so one eyed!!
-

An Oz side missing Lee, Tait, Harris etc.
SL are weak vs pace.
-
That was not the point you made Jeet!!!!!!!!
-
That was not the point you made Jeet!!!!!!!!
One series outside Asia doesn't really prove anything.
Bangladesh could go to Zim 10 times and win, would that make them a force outside Asia? I think not
-
Jeet thats crap to discount SL is crazy they are good enough to beat India tonight.
India are a good side mate but not that good and would not rate a mention against some of the great sides of the past 20 years.
-

Comparing India to sides from 20 years ago?
India are the best at this moment in time and that's all that matters
-
And here I was thinking England and Australia were competing for the Ashes when in fact they were hoping for the Indian teams approval ;)
-
Comparing India to sides from 20 years ago?

Nope. Their bowling is dreadful, and Dhoni's not one of the better keepers around. I'd prefer South Africa or Sri Lanka over India.
-

india are nowhere near as good as you seem to think they are jeet
-
As much as some of us may not want to i think we do have to accept India are a strong outfit, after all they are in the World Cup Final. Having said that come on sri lanka and thrash those aussie beating indians! :(
-
Number 1 Test side and number 2 ODI side.
Dreadful bowling? Who you kidding? Only South Africa's attack is better than India's
-
those rankings mean nothing, indias bowling is weak, you're having to bowl tendulkar
-
Sure India might want buffet bowler like Anderson or Tremlett who get flogged around at 7 rpo.
-
Jeet
We shall see this summer how buffet Anderson is in English conditions.
You have finally broke me with your tripe
-

A great player has adaptabilty. Anderson isn't great. English conditions will see Zaheer dominate Anderson
-

Anderson wasn't on form in this world cup and you could see it clearly. An on form Anderson could get into ANY team with ease.
India's bowling attack isn't bad, but at the same time it isn't amazing, the game against England proved that.
-

If Indias bowling is so good, why do you have to root around between yuvraj, tendulkar and raina to fill your overs? And you have even indicated yourself Sreesanth is pathetic, and appear to not think a great deal of harbhajan, so Zaheer Khan and Patel together are better than every other bowling attack in the world?
-

India are playing 4 bowlers, so batsmen have to bowl the remaining 10 overs. Hardly rocket science isn't it ?
Zaheer, Munaf and Harbhajan are solid. Sreesanth is crap but that's life
-
anderson's a quality bowler, better than any indian bar zaheer, who i think we will be able to compare properly this summer. he came into this world cup after bowling a fair few overs over the winter, and he adapted pretty well to oz conditions.
-

No, not rocket science, merely illustrating the point that a 4-man bowling attack can hardly be seen as amazing.
I think i would say Zaheer is world class, i'll take your word that the munaf is solid, but you never seem to have anything positive to say about harbhajan?
Aha agreed on sreesanth.
-

Anderson supposed quality is only on display when the pitch allows so.
Zaheer is streets ahead in all conditions
-
whos the dude they keep showing on the balcony with the freddie mercury tasche?

I don't like Harbhajan's attitute. Yes he has 700 International wickets but I've never been a fan. Another one of Ganguly's guys who rather get into a boxing match rather than let his skill do the talking...
-
whos the dude they keep showing on the balcony with the freddie mercury tasche?
Amir Khan an Indian actor
-
good knowledge Jeet....just wondered why they keep showing him...Bollywood isnt my stong point!
-
Wicket down, 179-4
-

According to most Indians, India has two religions cricket and cinema. So actors are like royalty!
-
Tom is he your new idol with that tache?
-
mate that tache is a thing of wonder and beauty...and its not even Movember!!!
-
Belter of a slower ball.....think it has a tache and glasses to disguise that one on the way down!
-
182-5
Sri Lanka are collapsing.
-
hardly collapsing mate, jayawardene's still there
-

Fair play
-

They are collapsing around him is what I meant, two batsmen have departed in quite a short space of time.
-
Watch out for Perrera. He smashes it miles if he gets going!
-
182-5
Sri Lanka are collapsing.
Get those cricket clichés in a career in commentating beckons!! one bring two ;)
-
Both our 1's opening bowlers are in Mumbai right now, one lives there the other is on holiday. Not a bad place to be right now I'd imagine.
-
what an innings from jayawardene, take a bow
-
another 20 off these last 2 overs will make an interesting run chase! dont think 250 is enough but pushing it upto 270 has a psychological edge in chasing it down
-
agreed, i think sri lanka will fancy it if they get 265/270
-
Kulasekara will be buzzing after that knock and should have a great day with the ball.
-
yes perera! come on sri lanka :)
-
yes perera! come on sri lanka :)
indeed, he can hit it, my money's firmly on sri lanka now
-
upper hand to SL with those last 2 overs....275 a very healthy total to bowl at with the talent on show in their line up...im glued to my lazyboy for this run chase

haha. indeed

English Coursework :( :(
Psychology dissertation, but cricket World Cup is every fours years and a degree is only 3 year long so it's no contest really.
-
sehwag gone, great start for SL
-
2 words.....GAME ON!

"From Chana7: "Why is Sangakkara wearing a bike helmet?"
It's one of those new-fangled batting helmets which looks like a bike helmet with a grille attached. Tweet us with the hashtag #bbcworldcup to get involved today."
Taken from the TMS text on BBC.
-
good spot mate!! may give them a cheeky tweet

It was mentioned in the normal live text commentary earlier too, i e-mailed in but it wasn't shown unfortunately
-
good work forum peeps keep people informed of it and us ;)
-
Great shots from Sachin. He's wearing velcro pads, I thought he only ever used the ones with metal buckles?
Those are his original test pads. He's had a few pairs of ODI pads hence the velcro.
Jeet, how are your nerves? :)
-
Jeet will come alive soon the Indians only sing when there winning.
I could fix that bat bet it is worth some money now
icc auctions anybody
-

Firstly India aren't winning Dave.
Secondly who sings when their losing?
-
england fans we have been used to it so sing whenever

Happiest day of my life! The class of 2011 join the class of 1983 as World Champions!
Dhoni secures his place in India history as the man who ended the 28 year wait for another World Cup victory!
-
Fair shout every dog has it day well done Jeet
-
Great to see sachin being carried around by his teamates. spot on when Kohli said that Tendulkar had been carrying the burden of the nation for 21 years and now its time they carried him.
-
After getting over the euphoria of India's victory a few points to take in:
1. The end of the great Muttiah Muralitharan's International career. May not be everyones cup of tea, but one things certain, the World will never see a manof his caliber again.
2. The heartbreak for Kumar Sangakkara. It was the 3rd time he's been a runner up in a World Cup final(2007WC, 2009T20 and 2011WC). Hopefully it's 4th lucky for Sanga in the next ICC event.
3. Mahela's masterpiece that unfortunately didn't see him take the cup home. A masterclass in how to play a proper innings.
4. Gambhir once again leads India when the main men fail. This guy is massively underrated. The new Dravid IMO.
5. Dhoni finally coming to the party. Better late than never and most importantly, no place better than the WC final.
Finally, Sachin finally got his hands to the trophy that he most desperately craved.
Two top sides played a final that was deserving of the occasion. Well played all round.
-
agreed
I do not think Gambhir is underrated Jeet he has been a top player for some time.
In the end i agree the two best sides played out a good final and no doubt the best side did win.
Looking forward to the Ipl now and starting my quest for a forma helemt..
-

In India he's still seen as a lesser player, compared to the flair players like Sachin, Sehwag etc. Bizarre but he's been the guy India had been searching for since the mid 70s!!! A solid opener for all situations!
Hope the Lankans aren't too distraught and light up the IPL
-
Haha I hope so too. Despite being Sri Lankan, I can't complain. We got to the final and pushed India all the way. If only we had had a better start I reckon...though our slow start (9 off 5 overs) was due to the brilliance, agility and determination of the Indians, especially Raina and Yuvraj, in the field and the point region.
It was another great game, and the best team won. More importantly it was a great advertisement for the game of cricket and it's great that both countries are coming to destroy England (;)) - we'll see! this Summer :)
Well done to India. :D
-
I'll never understand why people who live and were born here support other countries
-
I think what was most important is that the pitches had something for everyone.
Seamers got something. Spinners will all ways get wickets in Asia. The batsmen had to work slightly harder to get their runs.
Watching 350 vs 351 every game is very boring after a while.
Long live 50 over cricket
-
I'll never understand why people who live and were born here support other countries
you are what your parents are...
-
you are what your parents are...
you're not, if you were born here, you're english
-
yes you are technically british but you tend to go with the household on national views
-
i dont understand that though, especially when people who live here and were born here dislike england
-

dislike no.
passionate about their side yes.
-
Rp come on it anybody own identity to supports who they like Jeet obviously has many Indian Roots so supports them
What next should he go back to India because he supports them...
-
I have both a Sri Lankan and a British passport, and my whole family is Sri Lankan. Yes, I support England when they play anyone else, but I support SL primarily, and thus them when they play England.
I intend to support SL in the summer too. :)
-
procricket, don't make me try and sound racist, i just get fed up of people who live here and don't support the national team.
-
Those are your opinions, and you are perfectly entitled to them, but where you come from in terms of your family does have an impact on who you support. At least in my opinion. :)
-
i guess so, but why support a nation that isnt yours, and why support a team you cannot go and see
-
procricket, don't make me try and sound racist, i just get fed up of people who live here and don't support the national team.
Just because someone lives here doesn't mean they have to support the national team, they did not choose to be born here/ brought up here etc did they. Be a bit more tolerant
-
procricket, don't make me try and sound racist, i just get fed up of people who live here and don't support the national team.
Hey i get fed up with people out there not supporting our troops who live here but it a free world and opinions are thoose of the beholder and it makes our great country greater with the difference.
-

No it doesn't i guess, but to me, if you're english, support england, if you don't want to support your country of birth why live here
-
i guess so, but why support a nation that isnt yours, and why support a team you cannot go and see
You can't always go and see England. The fact I have a Sri Lankan Passport shows I am from that country though. ???
So in my case I wouldn't suggest that it was valid.. :(
You can't control what your parents do...I don't have the choice to pack up and move to Sri Lanka at the moment...
-
Because this country owes alot to Indians And British Indians and he can do what he bloody well wants too
-

agreed for the 2nd time in a night :)
-
dont say things like that dave will think people like him but he is right
-
i appreciate johans point, fair enough, but when people like jeet seem to slate england and be anti england all the time i wonder why they live here
-
meeeywwww
Jeet gets on my wick as i do to others but his passion and pride is unquestionable and something to be admired
Jeet does not dislike England He just loves India mate
-
"anti England" ..... that is a very strong term to use..... you make him sound from al-Quida ;) :)
-
i appreciate johans point, fair enough, but when people like jeet seem to slate england and be anti england all the time i wonder why they live here
I like certain England players,I dislike certain England players. Your view will be different to mine.

don't try and make me look racist, i suggested nothing of the sort

fair enough then i guess, it just seems like whenever someone mentions england you go out your way to say how much better india are and how crap england are
-
i dislike some int players does not mean i hate the country as i would love to nut yuvi and harbajan i dont know why they just rile me but i have many asian friends who i love a good argument with as they are pasionate if not miss informed but i could never put our conversations up here
-
don't try and make me look racist, i suggested nothing of the sort
Not wanting to make you sound racist..... should have put a "smiley" at the end.
-
Roco are you trollied mate nutting and triggers all in one night
-
i have had a few mate but cmon a square one to some of the more arrogant players would feel gooooooood
my triggers are awsome or so the mirror tells me
-
don't try and make me look racist, i suggested nothing of the sort

Nothing like that, some players in my eyes are slightly over billed. Not everyone agrees, but its my opinion.
-
Not wanting to make you sound racist..... should have put a "smiley" at the end.
apologies then, i wasnt sure how you meant it tbh
-

apart from Punjab and Mumbai(Harbhajan's adopted home) everyone in India would love to have a swing at Bhajji.
Yuvi is like marmit, love him or hate him lol
-
well at least its not just me then
yuvi is a class player but just comes across a d**k
i hate the arrogance of some players when you look at sachin possibly the greatest cricketer of all time is humble down to earth and has time for fans then these players with a 10th his talent come the big one
-
Luke Wright
-
IMO, England would have performed better if the 7 ODIs vs AUS after the Ashes were either not planned at all or just restricted to 3-4ODIs......
think these guys had been away since November. right?
-

Ganguly instilled this seize mentality.
India vs the World. I guess Bhajji has forgotten Ganguly is no longer around lol

we are not good enough IN THIS FORMAT
-
we are not good enough IN THIS FORMAT
To an extent yes. But the bigger problem is that limited overs cricket is still played with a traditional mind set. Need likes of Dilshan, Sehwag, Afridi's to pepper-up things..... take chances, think abnormally :)
Plus need one more good spinner - one of these 3 have to be groomed fast - Adil Rashid/ Monty, Samit..... I like Samit, he can bat and bowl, just need to get him into a slimming course..... weight should not be a disqualification......
-
We rarely produce a player like that due to conditions in England with the tracks swinging and seaming it's hard to go at the ball all the while so openers are taught to be cautious when they are young where as in India Sri Lanka where dilshan etc grew up pitches are flatter so they learn the skills of going at the bowling early from a young age
-
We do not have many players who rotate the strike either and when a class spinner comes on we freeze.
Keiswetter is due a chance
My own pick for the world cup would have been Shah as he can play one day cricket better than most of England so called one day top order
-

Trescothick was a dasher, but he was a rare breed in English cricket
-
That's why I said rarely as got tres beefy to an extent but rare compared to teams that grow up on non seeming wickets
-

England need to give someone 20-30 games so have a try at becoming established as an aggressive opener. No-ones gonna score a ton every innings. But in 30 games 4-6 solid contributions would identify someone.
-
I think we should just steal other countries talents
Arjun Tendulkar should be brought here
-

Have him, he's a leftie!
Can't be as good as his old man....
-
That's just not English jeet if you don't perform over 5-6 games your gone look at tharanga he avg 25 if he was English he would not be playing
-
just watching the highlights Jaywardene is just class
-

I agree but sometimes you have to take a risk. Don't worry about conditions, back the player no matter what.
Look at India and SL. Sehwag and Dilshan where middle order players almost forced into opening and it has paid rich dividends. In Sehwag case, he still claims to be a middle order player!!
-
even Jayasuriya went for over 20 innings without making any impact and them he suddenly exploded and was a nightmare to bowl at.....
time and patience is the key..... an selectors and administrators have none....
