Title: A little training device I discovered :)
Post by: billyb on April 19, 2011, 09:41:45 AM
Well, the title lies. I had been thinking about it, and then some Aussie Kid went and did it. Typical. Anyway-
The majority of people can not afford their own bowling machine. Yet most still want to be able to have a bit of a bat, work on a few areas, even just for fun.

That is the basic idea- I found it easier to tie the string around a sock containing the cricket ball. It is useful for foot movements etc, and ideal if you don't have much room :) Not sure if this has been posted before... Sorry if it has.
If anyone knows how to make the ball travel faster, let me know!

Hope that works :)

The problem with swingball type systems is that you can only play certain shots, whereas this is pretty much limitless- I managed to work on bouncers etc by shortening the string. You need a central point above an area of space :) Works for me :)

I would not do that without pads on!

Get an old stocking off someone and put a cricket ball in it. Really easy, cheap and very simple! It's better than the string because it stretches, opposed to reaching it's length then just bouncing back and trying to kill you, ahahah, lol

ahaha, very funny Number4. I actually got them off Jamie Lyon as he is the softest league player I know, ahahah. But in all seriousness, whenever I watch the sport news, he is always injured!

When I was a kid we used to use a stocking tied to a clothes line to knock our bats in

i used to have something as a kid similar to this. cant remember the name. possibly cricket master or something like that. basically was a hardish rubber ball attached to a small bungee rope. you had 2 metal U clips you would hammer into the ground. run the cable underneath it and fix one end to one of the clips. you would then pull the ball back and release at the batsman. was not a bad idea. hurt like hell when you missed the ball and the bungee got wrapped around your legs. other than that it seemed to work

You could just buy the eye in set and use your own bat?

I tie my stocking to a coat hanger and fold the sides in and fold the hook so it faces me, instead of facing the side. Then I put it on my gutter! That is the best way as it doesnt require you to tie it to the gutter itself and it has no impact on the gutter as it is attached to the coat hanger :D. I can include pictures if that description confuses anyone.

Everyone's got the idea! :)
I don't bother with pads when using it, simply because It doesn't hurt, I can not get the ball to go quick enough. I may just have a really high pain threshold, but I doubt that :) I have been hit in the head with it- it stings for a couple of minutes, but when you wake up a few hours later you almost as good as new! Joking aside, this is good for technical aspects of batting perhaps... Video it, look at how the shot looks, edit it - and get better :) Also a cheap and easier way to make an appearance in the 'Videos of you playing' thread. :)
The stocking idea is similar to what I have been doing, I didn't think it would stretch far enough though and also don't have any stockings, funnily enough :P Although I may try it in the future, thanks for the tip !

These are great for gently prepping new bats as well. I've been using one for years and have one outside still tied to a tree. I saw the idea in a Geoff Boycott cricket book. Using no pads is nothing to worry about, however if the wire whips your fingers it can hurt more than you'd expect.

Maybe, but for people who don't know, it is invaluable... So much better to knock in bats this way, seriously :)
