Everyone's got the idea! :)
I don't bother with pads when using it, simply because It doesn't hurt, I can not get the ball to go quick enough. I may just have a really high pain threshold, but I doubt that :) I have been hit in the head with it- it stings for a couple of minutes, but when you wake up a few hours later you almost as good as new! Joking aside, this is good for technical aspects of batting perhaps... Video it, look at how the shot looks, edit it - and get better :) Also a cheap and easier way to make an appearance in the 'Videos of you playing' thread. :)
The stocking idea is similar to what I have been doing, I didn't think it would stretch far enough though and also don't have any stockings, funnily enough :P Although I may try it in the future, thanks for the tip !

These are great for gently prepping new bats as well. I've been using one for years and have one outside still tied to a tree. I saw the idea in a Geoff Boycott cricket book. Using no pads is nothing to worry about, however if the wire whips your fingers it can hurt more than you'd expect.

Maybe, but for people who don't know, it is invaluable... So much better to knock in bats this way, seriously :)
