Played in the National Cup game today against Reading CC (First team debut), amazed me the difference in quality. Intensity was also really high... have much more respect for the people playing first team, it isnt easy at all.
So whats the general consensus? Do people think there is a big gap between 1st/2nd and 3rd's? Main thing I have noticed is that in 3rd team cricket you will always get at least 1 bad ball an over to put away.
-
Massive difference between 2nd and 1st team cricket at my old club, similar gaps between 4 to 3's and 3 to 2's but much easier to make the jump due to the levels involved.
-
They had a couple of Hertfordshire guys playing, I couldn't get anywhere near the ball! Was so late on everything!
-
Main difference i have noticed is intensity, accuracy of bowlers which means you have to find runs off decent balls and batsmen generally seem a little more solid
-
Absolutely massive gulf between 1st team and 2nd team across the country however it can differ from league to league but still a major step up.
-
The difference is big indeed mate but like cranking a bowling machine up it takes time mate
You will get there mate

our 3s and 4 are not great, more a youth development set-up. Our 1s and 2s are playing a pretty similar standard. Saying that, Opening for the 1s is a lot harder than for the 2s. I guess it's the consistency as I normally score at more than a run a ball but in the ones I'm more test match.
1s is a lot Whittier too

whittier?

There is also more banter but also much more aggression and a competitive edge which i relish, just need to get some bloody runs and stay in the one lol

whittier?
Comments/sledges, can actually influence the most stubborn of batsmen
-
Big difference between our 1sts and most of our 2nds 1 or 2 could get in but rest would struggle
-
In some area as rich says you could be up against international players St 1st eleven standard
-
The biggest diffence I noticed was hopw hard the ball comes to you in the field.

Wasn't sure :L

1sts. I find the Bowled is ok in my league. Nothing exceptionally quick tbf. I find fielding easier in 1sts rather than 2nds because no one mooses or slogs.
2nds. Standards ok but everyone is really slow bowling wise.
3rds Introducing a lot of younger players to adult cricket. Some sides take it seriously others not so, often good games though

Wasn't sure :L
it's okay, i thought it was something i hadnt heard of ahah

Spelling of words I do no use often isn't one of my strong points :L

Massive difference between 1st and 2nd's in batting and bowling, and big difference between the bowling in the 3's from the 2's.
Even down to the fielding their is a bigger gap
-
Biggest difference as you go down through the teams, is that (in our league at least) the batsmen will get themselves out more often than the bowler will get them out, if that makes sense. The batsmen will make the mistake rather than them getting out to a peach of a delivery
-
That makes sense. I find that you have to get our first team batsmen out.

Lucky to have played all 3 levels and tbh the difference isn't great for a player wanting to make the step up. Once you get your head round the boring banter, a bit of extra pace and the batsman being more ruthless with bad balls, most decent cricketers can adjust to as higher level. The condition being they have the ability to make that grade. Quite often seen our best colts jump from 3rd to 1st XI successfully, because they have the ability to improve and meet the standard. In terms of the actual difference between levels:-
3rd XI - 1/2 bad balls an over, fielding so/so, batting pretty weak after 6, top 6 batters are either over the hill or decent colts
2nd XI - 1 bad ball an over, fielding generally sharper and most catches taken but still plenty of unfit guys, batting tends to be more experienced and deeper normally down to 8/9 can bat. You start to get guys bowling bouncers and some extra pace.
1st XI - 1 bad ball every 3 overs, fielding sharp fewer singles are most guys are fit, catching good and the batters more aggressive and ruthless. A few rapid bowlers and the most bowl 65-70 mph+.
Just my thoughts, but I know Reading and they are amongst the elite in the Home Counties so it might be a little different as they have 4/5 very good sides. There 2nd xi is almost the same as many other teams 1st XI.

Just looked at the scorecard on play cricket and they certainly had a few decent players playing! Madness!
Guy who got me was a former MCC YC and played Gloucestershire 2nd XI last year...

When i play for our 2s i can score 50 every week without any real difficulty, just gotta turn up, and i usually get dropped 2 or 3 times on the way. Plyaing 1s however is different, lot more banter etc, which i love, but of course the standard is much better, but you still have to play your game! Doesnt help when their are 6 leagues between your 1s and 2s though.
