With the MCC seeming to be pushing for day night games what do people think about them?
-
It is an interesting question - I am not sure you can have them/need to have them in the UK - because of the current popularity of test matches and the fact that playing in the even in the uk doesn't really work.
However in India they love the day night stuff, so it may work in the sub continent. I have no idea about Aus and NZ. It might work in the Carribean too...
-
I think a couple of better questions are:
1. At grounds equipped with flood lights, should bad light be allowed to stop play?
2. If there is light drizzle, that most club teams would play through at weekends, should international cricket stop?
-
It couldn't/wouldn't work here. I could see them working in the Caribbean where dew generally is not an issue. Likewise in some venues on the subcontinent and/or Aus and NZ. I'm not sure I would want to see it though. Would it really feel like a Test match if the floodlights were the only light, and a pink ball was being used?
-
I don't think it will work but something needs to be tried as test match audiences are dwindling all over the world
Big problem for me though is that the pink ball is a kookabura!!!!!!!!!

I suspect that Dukes would make a pink ball if it was required...
-
I hope so as the kook seems to encourage batting rather than bowling as has no seam
-
True, but at least a couple of our bowlers can use it...
-
Tiflex also make a pink ball (its a real bat breaker apparently) http://www.tiflex.co.uk/oxbridge/oxbridge.html
-
Duke's are the worst ball I have ever played with. Played a T-20 game over here last year and the oppostition used one. It was was hard as a bloody rock and felt terrible coming off the bat. But that's just my personal opinion and seeing as we are supposed to use Kookaburra's, I was probably just surprised more than anything. I'm sure that I could get used to it, but atm I dislike the ball with a passion, lol.
-
Current popularity Buzz ? Cardiff was a ghost town. I wonder who objects to the Pink ball ? (the pink ball has been on the table, tried and tested for some years now but some in the sub cont must have objections).
-
Dukes are the best balls ever. As a bowler, they seam like crazy and make the batsman's life hell for the first 15 overs, unlike those soft Kooks with no seam.
According to Hoggard, the Tiflex swings loads more than the Kook or Dukes.

That is the ECB's fault for scheduling a game somewhere where it is always really cold wet and misrerable (and in wales..) the Lords game has been largley well atended, the India games will all be sell outs, the Aus games were sell outs and the matches against other teams usually do well, when not scheduled in building sites (as happened last year) So yes they are well attended in the England.

Amazing how it is always bats people that complain about the ball !!!

Buzz, the UK is wet , cold and miserable at the best of times so that does not wash. Looks like the ECB are trying to spread the game like they did some years ago when Durham became a 1st class ground and county team.
-
they are looking to spread the game yes but too many test grounds for me
-
To be fair, 7 test matches should go to 7 test grounds. Lord's shouldn't get 2. Just like India have 12 or so grounds and you get what the BCCI picks.
Back to the thread though, Day night Test matches would be a nightmare thanks to the way dew falls in the UK. It would almost be two different games. That played prior to dewpoint and that played post.
-
The point I was making is that when the scheduling is right test matches in England are well attended - the Rose bowl next week will have a good crowd too. As a result my view that test matches in England are well attended is valid.
The ECB give the matches out to the grounds who pay the most money (which makes financial, but little other sense). They use the "spreading the game" argument to pretend that isn't the case. Anyone who things differently is a little naive.
And Lords should get 2 tests as they sell the most tickets and raise the most revenue for the ECB

Dukes already do make a pink ball
-
I agree that in England day night tests are not needed as they are generally well attended, the timing in the UK is not the problem I think it is the price of tickets. The prices for some games are ridiculous and I think the main reason some people stay away. In countries where test match audiences are dwindling day night games could be a viable option. However would putting the start back a couple of hours really increase crowd numbers in any noticeable way? If people are not interested they are not going to go regardless of the start time

Lol, it wasn't that it swung more or less, it just felt really bad off the bat and I didn't like it. Mind you it was my first ever experience with the duke, so I was probably just not used to it. It is also a fair bit darker than a Kookaburra, but that didn't affect anything.
-
all this talk of dew, but we happily play ODI's in the UK on a day night basis.
I'd prefer a more extensive 4 day trial first. Maybe a round of matches or all matches played for a month, to better understand the problems. Might actually make cricket more interesting if the ball zipped around a bit. In a way, going back to an uncovered wicket.
-
Ticket prices are a big thing I can't see why some grounds (the ones with poor attendance) don't lower the prices as even after the gate fee food prices etc are quite high surely more people at a lower price is better than less people at a higher price
-
I guess that they have difficulty with ticket prices as they have to meet the amount of money that they bid to the ECB, and in most cases, they will look to achieve that from day 1-3 pre-sales. They then won't lower prices as people will complain who have already bought tickets!

Buzz, why not give all test matches to Lords and toss out the Taffy's from the ECB and then jump into bed with the BCCI ?
Just think of all that money !!!

What you are saying has absolutely no relevence to my post (or this thread).
The Welsh paid £2,000,000 to host the test match and the ECB said thanks for the cash - and then are laughing when the Taffy's lose £1,500,000 on the game because it isn't their problem. The same for the Edgbaston tests last year.
Obviously having 7 tests at Lords is a stupid comment.
But seeing as you have an issue with the MCC, let's not forget that the MCC (members) put up the cash to pay for the Pakistan vs Aus series last year and lost a seven figure sum - but were it not for the issues with the Pakistan board would willingly have done it again.
What has this got to do with the BCCI? Other than they are both in it for the cash rather than the good of the game.

You seem out of touch how cricket should be run Buzz.
Feel free to open another thread as "What you are saying has absolutely no relevence to my post (or this thread)"
Eyes wide shut (have you joined that club ?).
Please feel free to email me should you have any other concerns as this thread needs to be left clear and free from objective discussion.

You really do love casuing trouble don't you Mr Lekka - you've only been back on here 5mins and trying to get people riled

Great advert for day/night test cricket coming off in this light when the lights are on

I think what you meant to say was 'why don't you crawl back under your rock you childish little angry troll.'
How many times have you been banned/stormed off/thrown a tizzy when people speak the truth?
Why keep coming back if you are just going to behave like a bored teenager every time? We all have our moments here but you just seem on a mission.
Posts like yours above, and indeed just about anything you have ever posted here hardly improve the reputation of your brand.

It's times like these when I feel sorry for Kev - he's a nice bloke. The words 'flogging' and 'horse' spring to mind.
