Whilst the subject of retro bats is around the forum, did anyone notice what Tom Maynard had done to his GM tonight? Had trimmed the stickers so it was just a GM logo and gave a similar retro look to the GN legend looked pretty good! Not sure what GM thoughts are on him doing this but definetely looked like he'd spent some time on it, so must be a personal preference.
-
Have you got a pic mate?
-
I didn't even realise they were still GM stickers on there!

Retro, interesting. But surely nobody actually wants to go backwards?

There's a look in his kit bag and at his bats above. Doesn't show the retro stickers, but it may be something to do with the 'Secret Weapon'

Perhaps a limited edition. . .so not mass produced.
-
edward, not backwards in terms of innovation, just backwards in terms of appearance, for nostalgia's sake. I'd put good money (if i had any :() on a retro stickers range being successful
-
Edward, maybe design a new set of retro stickers for one design bat and allow the concept go viral and see the response. £500+ per bat would be peanuts for such people looking to dream in the past.

Thanks chaps, interesting thoughts. Roll on September 8th....

There's always a market for middle aged men trying to regain their youth ;)

That's why we make our cricket trousers slightly too tight.... 8)

No, we tend to launch to the trade simultaneously through the Trade Stockrooms.
-
lol . . . .I like that. . . . . .just out of curiousity, and on the topic of retro if i wanted some GM Maestro stickers. . .could you point me in the right direction. . ??

I can indeed, but regretfully it is a cul-de-sac. We don't send out just stickers. Thanks for the prompt on this as it has Catalysed me start a new thread...

Would you send out a Maestro bat including the stickers?

No, we tend to launch to the trade simultaneously through the Trade Stockrooms.
Is this the same for overseas 5 Star Dealers ?

Yes it is. A variety of our overseas distributors attend the launch. Timing has changed a lot over the years as news of new products spreads immediately on the Internet

Ok Edward. Please let me know the date you guys set so I can book my flight.
-
I noticed the strange stickers last night as well. I didn't think they were GM initially but there as a close up and you could see the silver GM on the front. Only picture I can find is of the back of the bat which had a black sticker on, not sure whether this was GM or another sponsor/advertisement.

If we were refurbishing a Maestro, and still happen to have Maestro stickers, then we would use them. However, Maestro is not in the range currently, so we would tend to sticker it using the most appropriate ones that we have.
We don't have any Maestro left, as it happens
Kind regards
Edward
-
Its a Blank Bat he bought abroad and he has his Company sponsor, IMB Motor Solutions on the back and to fit with his sponsorship with Gunn and Moore he has placed a simple GM sticker on the Front.

I know that Hunts will make a bat to an old shape. Will GM do this?

Yes indeed. As soon as you are selected to represent your country.

Edward. . . .whats my chances of you hand picking out a bat for me. . . .you dont ask, you dont get. . . . . one off forum special. . .what you say??

Gunn and Moore don't give stickers out to bats that aren't there own, Edward has made this clear many a time
-
Maynard has been using a blank bat for the majority of the season. But perhaps, it being a televised game, he cut out an old GM sticker and stuck it on there.
-

About as much chance of me getting Olympic tickets!

That was nicely put Edward!

Ed, why do GM refuse such requests as seen in this topic?
i.e.
-picking out a bat yourself for someone
-supplying old stickers if somebody favours them
-supplying custom shapes (i know this is more challenging than the other two points)
it all seems a bit wooden and rigid to me, its what turned me away from the company, i think i speak for a lot of people when i say that i prefer the companies who supply a better customer experience, possibly even going out of their way to help, certainly not flatly refusing any requests as seems to be the case with GM.

Personally I think we're very lucky to have a brand such as GM involved in the forum.
However, there business model is not geared to the personal touch experience that you get from the other boutique brands on here. They are geared to high quality, high volume production, which doesn't cater for that sort of flexibility.
As soon as they offer the personal service to one person, everyone will want it!
-
-picking out a bat yourself for someone - how many bats a year do GM produce? I bet it's a hell of a lot of bats to wade through to find the one that's perfect for you
-supplying old stickers if somebody favours them - they probably don't keep them in production, plus may not sit with how they want to market their product
-supplying custom shapes (i know this is more challenging than the other two points) - I believe bats are currently machined using CNC technology - a custom shape would mean re-programming the NC tape, which I doubt is cost effective for one offs
-
and in truth why shouldnt they want it
it a service and if people though with there wallets they would do.
It is good free market reaserch in my eyes for the gn and gm boys

With respect, because you don't understand our business. We are a business to business operation, not business to consumer. We are the largest volume, quality bat manufacturing operation left in the UK. We are simply not geared up to do anything in "1's".
We do not supply stickers alone as we choose to try and ensure that our intellectual property is applied only to our bats by our own folk in our own factory in Nottingham, England. Once a bat has come to it's end of life, we do not stock further stickers of that particular range. We will happily service / refurbish any GM bat of any era, but it is just not practical to stock every label set ad infinitum.
Sorry if this comes over as abrupt, I really don't mean to be. We very much care about the customer experience but it would be quite wrong for us to promise that which we cannot deliver. I think that if you came around the factory, perhaps it may be easier to understand why we do what we do.
Thanks for the question anyway, it's a good one.
Kind regards
Edward

Mr C - I am not sure I agree - they have their stated models and want to divert their customers to those. You cannot, in my view, build a global brand around the (in my view totally justifiable ;)) whims of some bat nerds on a cricket forum.
If you think about it - I may want a GM Maestro from the early 90's because it was the bat I hit my first 6 with and my first 50's with - but that doesn't mean 10,000 other cricket lovers will want that.
But back to what I want... Dear Edward (aka Jimmy) please will you fix it for me to get a brand new GM Maestro with modern bat technology, a fat oval handle and a colossal middle with good spine height and a nice bow....
I will keep dreaming!!
Yours
Buzz
p.s. I would pay...!! ;)
-
and Mr Cricket.. did you see the letter they wrote to pumakid they have great customer service! better than any other brand of there size! and edward is very helpful with any questions regarding GM
-
oh Mr Lowy got their first...

Thanks Johnny, I have replied very similarly to what are perfectly reasonable questions. Apologies for posting a URL in a previous post that I see you have nuked. Not thinking straight!

Nor do I, the 2 I had certainly weren't - but they were also relatively thin compaired to today's bats - it is all about the modern technology and vintage branding on this forum at the moment :)

Hi Aidy
I certainly do enjoy my job but I have to confess that I am not a cricketer. Yes I know, wailing and gnashing of teeth etc. We do have just one or two fairly useful boys and girls on the Team however so rest assured that we bleed sap before blood!
Kind regards
Edward

Have to say that this has been one of the more amusing threads on the forum recently.
Dear Mr Lowy,
If I have represented my country at Tiddlywinks, does that qualify me to have my old skool bat shape made? ;)
-
I used a GM 5 Star Maestro in 1987 and it did have a slight bow. Large piece of willow and performed like a dream.

If you need a new bat to pursue your chosen sport, I'm not sure even the DXM process can help!

Edward,
For all the success and innovation GM succeed with, a vast amount of their success must be down to you. Your method od dealing with...well lets call them poorly thought out questions and less than sensible people is absolutely second to none.
You know chaps, I doubt Edward has ever PM'ed threats of physical violence to a forum member. Amazing ain't it!

Amen to that, so I for one don't feel like gnashing my teeth about you not being a cricketer. I'm sure you know more about business models and cricket bats etc than most people on this forum, and the forum is a better place with you on it.

New bat? New bats methinks.
-
im not in this to try and make anyone look silly, just asking questions to ascertain more knowledge about various brands, afterall, it is of their choice whatever they decide to do. thanks for your response Ed, admittedly, its the only one ive paid any attention to. I look forward to seeing the new ranges.
-
Forum exclusive time?
-
Well the Icon has done a good few years and is the oldest bat in the GM range at the moment and one of your lads let slip a while back it is at the end of its life span as a product. So come on then ed is it the Icon Mk 2 or are you going to replace the Apex as i just have not seen many of them around!!! PS how about some more training kit such as fleeces with zips up the middle and the like!!!

No problem Mr C, quite understand where your questions were coming from, hope I have been able to explain our side of things.

Icon continues to be one of our very best sellers. Dare I say that it is Iconic, and continues in the range.

By the way, if this retro lark is true....

...I hope I get some commission! :)
-
Thats what I thought, the Icon is the one I've seen most of and a fairly normal shape. Be interesting to see if the Luna survives for a second season. Seen enough around to suggest they will and than one or both of the Apex and the Flare will get the boot. Not a big fan of either though.
-
Well the Icon is every where but the Apex nah don't see it any where!!!!! And new bat yeah the Icon Mk2 as don't most bats have a shelf life of 6 years!!! The Icon must be rocking on towards that!!!

do you make more than a certain company/makers in Sussex??
-
Why don't you just say Newbery/Tim Keeley Dave? I don't think it is a secret that they make cricket bats.
-
Because the company has another name and i do not know it mate
-
do you make more than a certain company/makers in Sussex??
I suspect you are talking about Grays. And if you are, emphatically yes as I understand Grays have moved their manufacturing to India.
Kind regards
Edward
-
Ed. . . .here is a question for you please.
how much further do u think bats can improve. . . . . .do u think all these fancy designs and scoops etc (eg Luna) are just a fad.
-
Because the company has another name and i do not know it mate
TW Keeley Ltd or something along those lines.
-
yes Mr T not grays at all.
-
Ed. . . .here is a question for you please.
how much further do u think bats can improve. . . . . .do u think all these fancy designs and scoops etc (eg Luna) are just a fad.
I think bats need to keep up with the various forms of the game, and the developing physiques and fitness of the players. I think we are supporting the aspirations of batsmen pretty well.
"Fancy designs" etc - well that comes down more to offering a comprehensive choice in weight distribution, quality and budget to cricketers. Yes, I do think there is a cycle that the market goes through oscillating between light & maneouverable to huge and heavy, so that at any one time some designs of bat can be seen as a fad whilst the market moves through to it's next resting place.
What do you think?
Regards
Edward
-
TW Keeley Ltd or something along those lines.
I would think that we do make more bats than Tim, yes. Have you asked him?
Very fine batmaker indeed, hats off to him.
Edward
-
What do i think . . .well im after huge and manouverable. . . i look forward to the unveiling of the new range.
-
you make all weights and ranges so you cover the lot don't you? huge, light, bats with maneuverability all based on the GM index etc etc
-
I suspect you are talking about Grays. And if you are, emphatically yes as I understand Grays have moved their manufacturing to India.
Kind regards
Edward
Yes Grays are now operating in India under/with Archie International.
