Title: what is the most frustrating way you have got out this season
Post by: Canners on July 11, 2011, 04:48:50 PM

I am asking this question as my dismissal from sat is still frustrating the hell out of me

i managed to play on, whilst trying to leave one...... and i haven't stopped thinking about it all week........

i plan to combat this by when leaving in future i make a real effort to bring my bat over my head when leaving one

played on to a 45 degree angle to a ball that should have gone over extra cover boundary as it was virtually a wide!

My dismissal on saturday was just as bad.

First over of the game. Short ball down leg side, try and pull it, keeps abit low hits me on the knee roll bounces up onto my glove, drops down and trickles into off stump just knicking the bail off. It was a long afternoon....

A match about a month ago I was after building a good innings and was on 15 off about 35 balls. Then a pie chucker came on and I was in two minds to smack it for 6 or play it in to the off side for a single. Ended up chipping it to mid off. Really annoyed over it

Sounds unlucky but why would it be a dead ball? or did it roll?

Mine is from the Aussie season which finished in April. I was opening against a lefty brining them in (Im a righty) but he often started them to wide, or he would pitch them too short. The ball before he pitched it a bit short so I left it and it sailed over the top, next ball was almost a carbon copy so I left it again, but this one didn't bounce and hit the top of off peg without me offering a shot. Bloody embarrassing, ahah, but what can you do.

Playing at Minehead on the better of the two pitches (by the sounds of things), with a game on the other pitch. I was surveying the field and saw that the fielder who would have been at deep square leg had his back facing our game and appeared to be fielding at long on on the other pitch. Needless to say, I played the best pull shot I have ever played in my life for it to end up in deep backward square legs grateful hands. I couldn't believe it!!!

Caught at 2nd slip after trying to leave a ball at the last second. The ball hit the ground, bounced up off first slips boot and they claimed the catch. Umpire didn't know but after long debate with the square leg ump I was given anyway. To make it worse I had only just recovered from an inswinging Beamer to the nads!  >:(

Yeah mate, we did alright. The next 10 overs yielded about 22 though lol. I have never seen a display of swing bowling that was as impressive as the opener's (Joel?). There was no need for an umpire cos no matter where it started, it was missing leg stump so no chance of LBW.

Hot Dog appreciated his present as well lol!

Joel is a great bowler, swings it more than anybody else I know, great lad as well! Hahaha, I thought he would like it! He always keeps on about how village my socks look in the last couple of games when I've played against him, yet in those games I've got him out, took 4 wickets and hit 120 runs! Backward point is an off side position mate, though bit worrying if there was only one fielder on the off side!

Probably either saturday or sunday for me too. Saturday I had fought really hard to get to 43 before inside edging a pull onto my stumps >:( annoying thing was we fell 13 runs short at the end and if I had stayed we would have won. Sunday opened the batting and probably felt the best I have had all season, played a lovely cut shot off of a first 11 bowler only to be stumped by one of the best bit of keeping I have ever seen  >:( guy from the other end bowling about 75mph I dug a yorker out off of the bottom of the bat and it was going towards first slip and the keeper standing up has grabbed it one handed and demolished the stumps as my back foot just came up  :o frustrated about that as it was the last over off both of their opening bowlers spells and as normally happens the rubbish comes on after that

Yeah mate, me and Joel had a decent amount of banter when I was umpiring. I was in stitches cos our middle order couldn't hit a ball off the square. He would have made much better batsman than us look average I reckon. Not close to 1st team honours?

Two bad ones for me this season. Got overconfident on Saturday against a week bowling attack and after performing a reverse sweep I tried the Dilshan scoop, it went wrong and I got caught. Was annoying as I had got a good start and was picking up the ball really well, thought I could help myself to a nice 20 or 30 in the last few overs.

Next one was again against a team low down in the league, however their bowling attack was much better, coming in at 3 I had struggled for 4 or 5 overs before slashing wildly at a wide ball to be caught very easily. What was annoying is that it was the first bad ball of my innings and I simply lost my head and tried to smash it out of the park.

Well not quite, it stayed very very low.. enough to get under the bat without being beaten by pace if you know what I mean.. it just didn't come up.. the umpire consulted the square leg but said afterwards I was unlucky to be given out...
In Prague we have few trained umpires so rely on ourselves or other team members to umpire...

Not a weird way to get out but a surprising way.

Absolutely timed a pull perfectly, thinking 4 every time, then the oldest guy on their team (late 50's) pulls off one the the best one handed catches I've ever seen. Gutting.

Yeh i know what you mean mate, got out to two of them this season, annoying because theres nothing you can do when it keeps that low.
Still no reason it could be a dead ball just for keeping low though!

Worst way of getting out ive seen in a while was 2 sundays ago, captain bowled it down leg to a lefty, was going to be a wide but as batsman tried to hit it his back leg came up and out to leg a long way and pulled ball onto middle stump instead of past my dive as stand in keeper!

Run out by a mate who hit it straight to short third man and walked up the pitch as if to run. At this age I don't know the word 'NO!!!' so went and was run out by a fair distance >:(
But not as bad as being triggered on Saturday against a very average bowling attack where I was in a position to cash in in difficult circumstances. >:(

But I get angry every time I get out like Buzz - I don't enjoy getting out.

The most annoying way I got out was earlier in the season when playing a friendly game at uni when opening the batting against Lingfield CC, managed to get myself to 42 not out surprisingly easily and coming off my 3rd ton in 5 weeks and well on my way to my 4th. The track was playing true facing a military medium bowler, he has bowled one of shittest balls all day right into my area of a full toss shin high on middle, this ball any other day would be dispatched over cow for 6.

and I ruddy well missed it and got bowled :(.

to add insult to injury we were playing a time game and we bowled 10 more overs at them and they won :@

Haha, when he's on form he is nearly impossible to play, Its hard enough fielding at slip to him! He's played a couple of 1st team games this year but not taken many wickets.... Never goes for many runs though :)

Out caught behind to the faintest of edges with the keeping standing up, was a good ball as it skidded through a little quicker. I was nice and set and enjoying opening the innings. Doesn't sound too bad does it?

It does when it's the 7th ball of the F*CKING OVER and your (No Swearing Please) of a team-mate can't count to six.....livid I was

And yes, I walked. Would have been given not out but I had kicked up such a fuss in their innings when one of their boys didn't walk it would have been wrong of me to stand my ground. My karma is in tact I suppose ;)

Batting 5ft out of the crease, level with the bowlers mark for getting off the pitch, big stride, ball hits me on the knee roll. League umpire who gets paid for standing there raises the finger. So impact is nearly four yards from the stumps. Words cannot describe the level of incompetence sometimes.

recurring theme for me im afraid! Left arm over swinging it in to me (rhb) i look to leave as it starts way outside off and it always darts back in to clean me up or trap me lbw, im wary of moving my feet and almost feel as if im out before the ball is bowled against a good left armer doing a bit with it... Something to work on over the winter for sure.

Maybe trying to cut the worst legspinner I've ever seen, I just seemed to hit it straight up in the air to point. Its the kind of bowler that bowls so slow you try to over hit the ball and end up playing a crap shot.

Or being given out lbw when I was standing on legstump after the ball clipped my back heel. I was also feeling good at the crease and the final three wicket's fell for 1 run, we ended up the losing the game by two wickets with 2 overs remaining. had I not been given out I could've added around another 30 runs with are opener who was on 70 odd.

Playing against a fast bowler, had pulled my back earlier when batting but it wasnt bad. got bouncered, went to pull him but was slow due to the weak back, gloved it behind the keeper. That as a dismissal is fair enough, the annoying part is the keep dropped the ball upwards :( he went to catch it, it hit his finger tips and went straight up about 2 feet slow as can be then he took it 2nd time round. cheeky sod didnt even apologise for the crap take!

Trying to guts out an innings being 33* at drinks having opened, got nowhere near one bowler so tried a new tactic of getting my body inline with the ball, nice backfoot defence with soft hands. Unfortunately so soft that it rolls back and just tips the bails off. After all the hard work before that, I play on...

Lacking batting opened 2nd ball inside edge ball into thigh (maybe both) ball rolled back onto stumps wouldn't have knocked bails if if stumps weren't so loose.

given out lbw hitting high on the back pad to a Yorks U15 opening bowler, bowling left arm over and pitching it halfway down the deck. Followed up 2 weeks later by the classic "Hows that Dad", "That's out Son" routine.

Got my own back by just brushing a lifter with my glove and not walking when our guys didn't hear it umpiring. I decided I had enough bad luck and it was time to even the score a little. Funny thing was the oppo were pretty obnoxious, full of chatty rubbish and busy cheating themselves(not giving plumb lbws etc) and that day they went berserk lol - just as well chat doesn't work on me. Even funnier in the return game we spanked them for 345-6 in 45 overs including their skipper going for 27 (4 sixes) in an over and them crawling to 150 odd for 5. Offered the skipper a drink after the game, "no we are heading back to watch our ones" - it was pitch black  :D

Turning out for a Sunday village team the day after I scored 150 in the league, received a head high beamer(Literally), hooked it straight to the guy on the boundary and the umpire didn't call it a No-ball....

12th ball of the day, against bottom of the league, a very poor fielding and bowling side. I had already dispatched a long hop to the boundary for 4 with the Joker. Then got one that stopped on me as I punched my hands through it, mid on dives down, (oldest on the team) parries it into the air from an inch of the ground, then roll onto his back and kicks the ball further into the air before catchy it whilst laying on his back.

To make thing worse, I then had to watch batsmen 4,5,6,7 and 8 pile on the runs to post 313. I was so bored that I even took order and drove to morrisons!

Personally, I reckon the most frustrating has to be stumped whilst clutching my nuts - full bunger that I never saw hit me square on and I never thought to make my ground.  Did have 70 at the time mind.

But I can think of two guys with greater cause to grumble - its been that sort of a season.  The unluckiest has to be the lad who walked out to bat three; at the non strikers end, before facing a ball, their opener mullered one back at the bowler who dropped the catch - the ball hit hands and shoulder and then carried on on to his stumps whilst he was still backing up!  Worse, the opener was his brother and went on to take us for 130!

The other, probably the best for sheer freak value, came in a 20/20 - lad skies one to short midwicket who, realising that we wanted the other batsman out, is sharp enough to put the ball down deliberately and run him out.  I lost sympathy when he stood there arguing that the catch had been made because the ball must have been "under control" for him to bounce it on the floor and retake it mind you!

I was ropeable and I'll bet you anything the oppositions reps umpire tried to get me out because I killed them last time 73 off 80.........what's more we lost by one run!!!!  >:(

Mine was more frustration with myself rather than a bad decision.

I had just moved on to 51 after nicking the strike from the final ball of the the 15th over. The second change bowler came on and I decided for some reason, that if he was 2nd change seeing what the 2 openers were like, that I would get after him and cash in.

How wrong I was. He pitched the ball on middle and as I tried flicking him into the legside it nipped back and hit the top of off.

In a game when we were casing 336 to win and having been 34 for 4, our number 6 and me got stuck in.  We had got the run rate to what was required and having just taken 8 off the over already and taking me to 71, hit a full toss straight through the V for it only to hit my number 6 on the back. This was as he was turning to get out of the way and it popped up for the bowler to catch it. Gutted!!!!

you'll be even more gutted to find out that you should have been given not out as the ball was considered grounded after contact with the non striker...

Gutted!!!!

Andrew Symonds got out in the same way against Sri Lanka, he hit the ball into Clarke and it deflected to the midwicket fielder.

shouldn't have been - non striker and a fielder's helmet are the exceptions!

I don't read Law 32 in that way. As far as I am concerned the batsman should be out in those circumstances. The law is clear - dead ball if it hits the fielders helmet or if it lodges in an item of clothing, otherwise the ball is "in play".

Agree with you:

3. A fair catch
A catch shall be considered to have been fairly made if
(a) throughout the act of making the catch
(e) a fielder catches the ball after it has touched an umpire, another fielder or the other batsman.
However, it is not a fair catch if the ball has previously touched a protective helmet worn by a fielder. The ball will then remain in play.

my batting partner ran past the stumps, then we attempted to run an overthrow but the umpire decided to stick his arm out and closeline my partner and knock him over (big umpire) , whilst im half way down the wicket, and i end up strolling back to the pavillion!

Looped up an easy catch off a Leading edge on 100 with 8 over left annoyed me as I grafted hard to reach it and was looking forward to cutting loose and playing my more natural game with the last few overs remaining!

Backward point is an off side position mate, though bit worrying if there was only one fielder on the off side!

Haha only just noticed...ment to say backward square leg...doh!

Stumped from the keeper standing back on about 40.
