Title: CBF all time test XI
Post by: Nickauger on July 19, 2011, 07:47:19 AM
In light of the apparent sub continental bias towards an all time best test team. Maybe we should have our own vote to see. Pick your best 12 players and I will collate the results at the end of play next Friday to see how th two teams differ.

4 batsman
2 all rounders
1 wicket keeper
4 bowler
12th man

Sutcliffe
Hobbs
Bradman
Graeme Pollock
Sobers
Kallis
Les Ames
Marshall
Warne
Andy Roberts
McGrath

Oh, and Viv Richards as 12th man!

A few left wing choices there, I was tempted just to pick 4 of the West Indies finest quickies, but felt Warne and McGrath had to be in there somewhere. Also couldn't choose between Healy, Knott, Les Ames, Godfrey Evans, and a couple of others for keepers. All-rounders were shoe-ins in my opinion, but I would have loved to have seen Clive Rice and Mike Procter play a few more test matches...

12th Man - Barry Richards (as he could be the best player never to play a prolonged period of test cricket with an average of nearly 75, over 4 tests admittedly). Of course, he could have been rubbish after that but somehow I doubt it.

No one going for imran khan, surely the greatest all rounder of his era. and there were some legendary all rounders in his day, botham, hadlee, kapil dev. Personally i believe only Sobers was a better all rounder.

Personal opinion dear boy. If you feel that strongly for his inclusion then share your views! :)

Well in terms of stats, he had a better test batting average than beefy, kapil, and hadlee. He had a better bowling average and economy rate than both beefy and kapil. I know stats dont tell the whole story but he was just a joy to watch, the flair and artistry of his play was beautiful. and he had the added pressure of being a captain and he was a inspirational captain. i know its not the test arena but took a pakistan to world cup victory too.

Like i said sobers is the greatest all rounder but after him its imran all the way for me. I would have both sobers and imran in my team.

Lol that's your opinion then mate, write down your best team. This whole thread is down to personal opinion to find the forum's ideas of the best test eleven of all time. I'm sure you don't agree with every-one's ideas which is why its a poll. Go on, give us your best eleven!!! :)

I reckon in years to come Kallis will be held in similar regard.  Beautiful batsman to watch, quality change bowler, truly dependable.

Yet gets hardly any plaudits. Perhaps it is due to the idea that he is seen to quite often play for himself.

True, but then you could say the same of most opening batsmen in test cricket over the years.  Does raise an interesting question of who would be in a team of current test players.  Mine certainly wouldn't just mirror the ICC rankings.

Strange how so few seem to have Boycott in there, anyone who can bat with a stick of celery on uncovered wickets should be considered.  Anyone mentioned Allan Border or Steve Waugh yet?  Broke all sorts of records. Ricky Ponting for sheer runs amassed (in all conditions) over the years?

Here you go nick

Gordan Greenidge
Ricky Ponting
Don Bradman
Vivian Richards
Garfield Sobers
Imran Khan
Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram
Malcolm Marshall
Waqar Younis
Muttiah Muralitharan

12th man : Joel Garner

I know im a proper opener short but i have to have those four.

Very true but perhaps absence makes the heart go fonder.

Fair enough.

Mine would be:
Greenidge
Tendulkar
Bradman
Richards.V
Sobers
Kallis/Botham
Marsh
Hadlee
Wasim Akram
Marshall
Warne

Got most test nations covered there, Kallis or Botham would be 12th man.  Though qalib13's argument for Imran Khan is very convincing too.  Too hard this.

This is really hard because there's always that one more player you want to fit in, however this is what I've gone for;

Hobbs
Herbert Sutcliffe
Bradman
Tendulkar
S Waugh (c)
Sobers
Knott
Warne
Holding
Marshall
Roberts

12th man- Lara

As I said really really hard to pick 11 players out of so many brilliant players that have graced Test cricket

And does the 11 not also depend on where they would play?

You can pick a captain if you want, and no, not really. Hopefully the all time test team should be because they are half decent wherever they play.

Don Bradman
Viv Richards
Len Hutton
Sachin Tendulkar
Garry Sobers
Ian Botham (Captain)
Kumar Sangakkara (best keeper who can bat equally in my opinion)
Wasim Akram
Waqar Younis
Muttiah Muralitharan
Jeff Thompson

12th man Malcom Marshall

I find it hard to include players I've never seen play, so the likes of hobbs and sutcliffe wouldn't get in my team. I'm going with:

1. Boycotte
2. Hayden
3. Lara
4. Tendulkar
5. Kallis
6. Botham
7. Prior (was racking my brains for a keeper and then decided, he's actually pretty awesome at the minute)
8. Warne
9. Courtney Walsh
10. Glenn McGrath
11. Curtly Ambrose

I can't believe hosk is in at 4 instead of me... Just because he can supply the whole league with bats

sorry, but I had to take into account the need for multiple trampoline effect bats and let's face it no one does the like the hosk.
he may be a bit high in the order at 4, but as I want first pick I felt buttering up was required.

sorry, but Dave got picked so we could have post match entertainment as he and the 12th man share a beer...
there are several deserving forum members who were left off the team.

if anyone can argue their case for.selection, please do. you should also state who and why you are dislodging someone from the team.
no one, myself included, is safe from the axe...!!!

on that basis I should be the first person dropped.

the problem is it is a bit too late to delete it...
