An Irish captain against Ireland, made me lol.

I like the squad, think it is good that without cook they have used it for experience for some Youth.

Completely agree with Hales, although he hasn't had the best of knocks for the A team.

I would be surprised if Trott opened due the power plays, want someone more aggresively minded maybe.

He's opened even in T20's, he'll open in that side.

Trott CAN be agressive, you should see him play for Warks in T20 and CB40 games

Before his test debut he was top scorer in the county t20 competition. The guy can score runs quickly, but even if he scores at a run a ball, he'll compliment kiesewetter's big hitting and aggressive style. For me, Trott should open with him.

Where's Stokes from?

Found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Stokes

Google is your friend!

Can't see any info on when he moved here, but presumably he was still under-18 as reading up on him he signed Pro at 18 after spending several years with Durham Academy

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Stokes moved to Workington in Cumbria with his folks when he was 5 or 6 - as his dad signed as a rugby league professional with Workington.  He's a big lad, could have played rugby too apparently, and talks with a distinct Cumbrian accent.

Be good to see both him and Scott Borthwick given a shot.

How can you say that Bopara and Patel are 'non English'?  Bopara was born in Forest Gate, Newham, and Patel was born in Leicester.

I have merged the topics.
as for the article the irish should ditch the chip on their shoulders.

if they really have an issue with the team Eng send over they should do their talking on the pitch.

if they loose then unlucky. the team going over to Ireland looks pretty strong to me.

Why merge Buzz , my post has nothing to do with the op's here ? As for chips , I see Ireland may not rest BOD for saturdays game. (he may need a rest but he also loves stuffing England)

How can 2 topics with identical titles not have anything to do with each other James?
Title: Re: Ireland v England
Post by: A-Swing-And-A-Miss on August 24, 2011, 01:00:28 PM
2 topics with identical titles both discussing the same match, merging them was a good idea. I think the better question James is why did you go to this section, see a topic already called Ireland vs England and yet still post a new topic with the same name discussing something that is relevant to this topic?

The thing is, until Cricket Ireland step up and sort out some sort of first class competition then they aren't going to elevate above associate membership.  Only needs 6 or 7 of the counties to take off, and would massively aid in the development of players.  Would also likely  lessen the losses of players to other sports as mentioned in that article.

Complaining about the likes of Joyce, Morgan and Boyd playing for England is pointless.  That is a choice made by the player and allowed under an ICC ruling.

Presumably they need quite a lot of investment to make this happen?

True, but nobody made it big by thinking small.  In these austere times, a little investment in sport can go a long way.  I'm not sure what the audience would be like for cricket in Ireland, but if you could get people there and it takes off, then it would be a boost to both the local economies in terms of jobs and the local sporting scene.

"the quality of side sent by the ECB."

As I said when I merged the topics, the quality of the side we have sent over is excellent, full of talented young players who if they were from other test playing countries, would be playing now.

I think that Ireland could ultimately develop a professional cricket county system, but it would cost a lot of money. They would need to build the infrastructure - grounds, facilities, youth systems etc - and would then need to put more money into signing up the talent, and the staff. It would cost a lot to set up, and a lot of money to run as well. And to make it financially viable, it would need to eventually break even and our own counties are struggling to do this, and many of them are in a lot of debt and struggling.

So sure, putting the money into Irish cricket would be a good thing for the game. But there would need to be significant demand for it to make it even viable. Would they be able to pull a few thousand to the grounds to watch 4 day cricket, one day, and T20 cricket?

Maybe, maybe not. If they couldn't, the clubs wouldn't be able to build themselves up financially as they'd probably always be working at a loss. So I think what they need to do is set up say a major T20 competition and build that up, and see what success comes of it. If it draws enough fans, perhaps introduced a major one day competition, and see what success comes of that. And if in the next five years these two tournaments are drawing fans in, and the players are improving and more people are wanting to play and watch, bring in a four day game. And by this point cricket Ireland should have enough infrastructure to support it.

Biggest problem at the moment is that cricket is too localised to certain areas such as dublin, north and north west of Ireland. The rest of the country, cricket is played at a very low standard.

Agreed, imagine the shitstorm if we called him an Irish XXXX - but we all know he can do and say whatever he likes without fear of reprimand. Why do you think he doesn't accept PMs - they are all monitored and read by the mods/admins.

On topic though, am looking forward to this game, we should roll them over given the quality we have going over, but am sure the boys across the water will put up a good fight, they are not a bad team at all in my opinion!

if England win well done Trott

If they dont then bloody hell what is he doing...

double edged sword he is making the to much pressure.

Hate to say it but Trott played 3 balls back in the 37th over of 42

Not good enough

Im with colesy on this - Trott is putting too much pressure on other batsman by facing too many dot balls.

this riminds me of when i was a junior and told to bat the 50 overs which i did and we got 170 and i ended on around 60 not out.

they then more often than not knocked them off in 25 overs

Ireland need to bat and hit straight to win this match, Tarf has always been slow and low and rarely rewards cross batted shots.

Ireland missed a couple of tricks today. Firstly Stirling should be batting at 3, where I feel he is best and also Mooney should have come in instead of Jones.

Overall it was a shame the match was reduced but full marks to the ground staff for getting us a game and hopefully Ireland can get more against the big boys
