Title: Gum Shields and Face Guards
Post by: Timbo on February 18, 2009, 10:27:00 PM
Whilst standing up to the stumps I now use a gum shield (idea from Paul Nixon) rather than a helmet. It is so much better than wearing a helmet which I believe restricts view. Does anyone else use them and do they have the same problems like sounding drunk whilst trying to talk!! What do you think about the 'new' face guards? Opinions please peoples...

mate i was a huge skeptic of helmets, sure they obsucre the view a bit but still i don't find them that bad.

W'eve got to where a helmet when standing up to the stumps and i don't think it obsucres the view of the ball.

the ecb are looking at changing the ruling about junior players having to wear helmets when keeping, i think they are going to allow face masks/aero style guards instead as there is little threat of damage to wicketkeepers skull

I only do a bit of part-time keeping but started to use a gum shield when standing up after watching my mate lose his teeth.... and believe me he is quality so it made me think if he can get hit I can definitely get hit!

I would recommend a helmet but cant get on with one myself.

i think wearing a helmet gives restricted view and movement, but i'd rather wear a helmet than get nailed by a ball in the face

im a very part time keeper and i think wearing a helemt only restircts view wen it goes up, or over ur head

If you have a problem with the speech issue when keeping i suggest an opro custom gumshield they are top notch

I never wore either in 20 years of keeping........but i will be getting an Aero P1 or P2 for next season, too many times have i broken my nose or cheekbones lost 2 teeth aswell. I am 35 now so I guess my reactions will start to get naturally slower from now on anyway.......

This winter will be my first season keeping without a helmet (due to ECB) i have a fair amount of dental done and i dont intend to lose it so i will be wearing a gum shield! Getting hit in the face doesn't really bother me as it has happened before even with a helmet!

yes it is like this

if u are 17 at the start of the season and within a month of the season gone u turn 18 u have to wait until next season, so basically the season u start when ur 18.

its also the same with bowling restrictions on seamers on the amount of overs!

yeh it is mate!, i wud still wear a helmet anyway i find it hard to bat without one as im scared to play a lot of shots and if the ball gets above weist height i generally (No Swearing Please) myself without a helmet!, and as u have grown up with one shud be comfy and used to it, not like them oldies out there! ;)

Will always wear one when batting even against spin, as i sweep quite a bit and i dont fancy eating more cricket balls than i have too! Keeping is a different matter
Title: Re: Gum Shields and Face Guards
Post by: stubbzy on September 27, 2009, 09:01:49 PM
yeah i know, but on extremely hot days, a cap againest spin is a great idea
Title: Re: Gum Shields and Face Guards
Post by: Coach on September 27, 2009, 09:09:54 PM
Still not if im sweeping i wouldn't personally but thats just me, many people do opt for it so why not

Cant belive there is still this macho nonsense about wearing a lid, wear one people! A cricket ball can seriously damage your face and not to mention your eyes.......
Title: Re: Gum Shields and Face Guards
Post by: stubbzy on September 27, 2009, 09:57:06 PM
its not macho at all mate, when your stood up keeping to spin there is no need to have a lid unless its turning and bouncing off the pitch, even then id back myself to take it or get out the way.

i will always go out to bat with a helmit unless the spinners are on purely for the vision purposes

Not macho nonsense its the fact that not wearing one can improve performances! and help make taking those high catches or the lobed up ones so much easier!

I do get what you mean mate, I stood up for over 20 years with out a lid, no keeper ever wore a lid back then. but my advise to kids especially as they are used to keeping in lids is dont risk it, there is simply no reason to, other than machismo.........I always bat in a lid unless there are 2 spinners on at the same time........
Title: Re: Gum Shields and Face Guards
Post by: stubbzy on September 27, 2009, 10:03:26 PM
yeah, thats the only time id bat in a cap.

id also wear a helmit if i was stood up to anything quicker than medium pace

The Aero P2 KPR is more than ample - they take some getting used to - but they are good

I always wear a helmet standing up to the stumps, although now 16. Just for safety really at the moment and I took a few dodgy ones last season which would have left me in a bit of a mess! Aero KPR mask looks good though.

The reason for wearing one to seamers, Hodd getting pinned in the CLT20! Spinners is a different matter
