Just wondering what people think has been the best bat trend throughout this forum and Cricket Supplies.
I remember warsop being very popular and the same with Fusion but both hardly get mentioned these days. i think people used to seek out some really good bats.
Newbery seem to have the best reputation at the moment in my view, Lavers also i feel if James was based in the UK with the price difference he would be the most popular.
The so called big brands have stayed strong throughout, with the exception of Slazenger who seem to lack any credability now. Around 2000 they made some really good bats.

fusion was probably the first i remember and the one i remember fondistly, simply because i ordered my fusion and it was my fave bat, and still owuld be but it broke :(
-
fondistly ??? get a refund on those tuition fees nick nack!....most fondly ;)
-
Hell4Leather seem to be selling a load of bats to forum members at the moment

its an early start for me today... :D
-
haha still drunk i should think....surprised u can even focus!!!
-
i remember people going mad for Matrixx, SS, SAF and Laver bats funniest thing is good old Dave (Pro cricket) purchasing just about every pair of pads on the market till he got some Gray Nicolls legend then i think he sold them too!!!
-
mb sher amin was quite popular along with the ss bats.
-
The current trend seems to be Hell4Leather and Laver & Wood.
The one thing I have realised whilst being a member here and having had the run of PeteHosk's fine bat collection is that practically every batmaker can produce a fantastic bat. Your almost better off picking based on stickers and price as all the makers can produce an excellent stick that will perform as you want it to.
I rarely, if ever, read of anyone providing a poor bat and when I do it seems to very much be the exception to the rule and not the norm...

Solitaire were prevalent for a bit ...

That's a fair view, and having a not quite Hosk-esque bunch of bats myself, I'd have to agree with it. None of Instinct, Newbery, Laver & Wood, Bulldog, H4L or Lekka have provided me with a bad bat. All are very good. You are unlikely to get a bad bat! Haven't used the SAF yet, so can't add it to the list, but it looks good!
In terms of the trends though, I'd say that in the last 12 months it's been very much Laver & Wood and H4L. Oh, and Sports Direct!
-
I know you meant bat makers by bat trends.
But you could also read it as bat trends like carbo handles, more than 15 grains, laminates, etc!!
The one trend I see as been quite consistent is people wanting BIG EDGES!
And my view is that big edges look the part, and logically you'd say that if a bat has big edges, it's more likely to have more wood and therefore a better middle....this is not always the case!
I have a BAS with 'normal' edges and an Adidas Incurza Elite which one weighs 2'8/9 with small edges, and both bats go like rockets!!
-
That Incurza absolutely flew the other night and it's like a matchstick! Funny, had never rated Adidas bats at all until then...just goes to prove that every maker can make/supply you with an awesome bat. It's more about finding a profile that suits you and a cost/set of stickers that you like the look of!
-
Tied in with that Pete, Bigger and Better Shark's Fins!!!
-
To be fair, that Adidas surprised me too! I think I almost killed the ball feeder and you several times!
And the youngters in the next net soon started looking concerned for their safety!!
Some of it is pot luck though, cos you could probably choose 10 of the Adidas bats and 2 or 3 would be exceptional, 5 would be average, and the remainder would be planks!
Anyay, the Ultra Laver trend seems to be the new interesting bat trend at the moment. Canners bat with 45mm+ edges on a 2'8/9 bat is showing real interest!!
And shark fins like those older American cars!
-
defo h4l! not that i am bias or owt lol
-
For me the popular trends are
1. big edges = better bat
2. "lower weight distribution for hitting over the top on low slow wickets"
3. concaving
But I hate all three, put the wood in the middle where I intend to hit it. If I miss the middle it's my fault. My match bat has a high distribution of weight and it's a fantastic bat to drive with. Within no.2 there is a constructed assumption that if you play on low slow wickets we must all hit the ball in the same place on the bat. Concaving, No NO NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Its gone too far.
Just my opinion on things nothing more. No offence intended.
-
Have to agree about the edges thing. I always ask for thinner edges and a higher spine on my bats if I am having one made for me. Really don't understand the thinking behind them. I know it is said that it means a mistimed shot will ping off the blade better but surely that comes at the expense of the power at the centre of the blade? High spine, thin edges, perfect! :D

Is the distrubution of 'ping' really that simply related to the shape of the bat though, I'm not convinced.

Lately the trend has been to pick-up bargains from JJB or Sports Direct :)
BIG EDGES, is not a trend it a on-going fetish on the forum. Whenever a bat is listed, the first questions not about the weight or middle , but "what is the edge size on that thing?"
LW & H4L seem to the "in" brands as of now. My guess is SAF will soon pick-up as will the GN100 Scoop and the Oblivion.
-
btw, did I miss something or Black Cats were not mentioned. Top bats.
-
i wouldnt have bc down as a trend, just an ongoing quality brand...

Never a trend though, as they've always been on the expensive side.

Or "Why do your bats have thin edges?", which is the one that I seem to get ;)
-
1/ Edges: I love big edges, but to be honest, I am thinking 35 to 39 is the max I would go to. How much more edge do you need?
2/ Concaving: Concaving is big right now - and I have it on my main bats. Happy with it.
3/ Grains: Geoffrey Boycott apparently never used a bat with more than six grains. I prefer a minimum of of 8-9 with my match bat having about 18 or so.
4/ Pressing: When I was a kid, bats were pressed like concrete front and back to make them last. These days the face is pressed lightly by the bat making Gods (Keeley, Laver, Kranzbuhler, Bradbury, Millichamp, Pack, etc etc) and the back and edges not at all in order to give the wood more rebound.
Bat making technology has reached its apogee. I would be stunned if bat makers can improve on the present brilliant standard of bats without the ICC and MCC changing the laws to allow performance enhancements that are presently taboo.

Don't tell everyone! Otherwise Charlie will run out and there won't be any more left for me! ;)
-
There was a trend about 12 months ago about laminated bats which was a taboo subject but there were quite a few being bought and sold on and I managed to pick one up simply out of curiousity
-

am sure tom would sell u a bat if he runs out!
-
Don't think h4l is a trend, that would assume people has started and stopped buying them. Not seen either in my short time on this forum.
Laver was a trend, about 3 months of furious buying and then selling from forum members lol
Gn and kooks for me, some big edges for those who like them!
-
Laver is still going pretty strong. I think normalizing it's premium price it is perhaps the best selling bat. A few people have bought more after their first foray a few months ago.
-
i am not sure concaving is a forum trend, i like its bigger than that, probably a market trend currently...same with big edges. but they go hand in hand.

I like a little concaving on a monster bat but the extremes are daft as on lighter bats!
I don't want massive edges i want a bat that has a true middle and leave me to use it. It's a bit of a c@ck extension really as yes it will be more forgiving but it's a comprimsed bat.
A bit like having blade golf clubs and cavity/muscle backs, they are only there to make up for the lack of technique. I got taught with a training bat and still net with one today. I want the meat in the middle where i can use it...
Someone on here the other day gave out the best advice for a bloke with £400 to spend.... get a bat made for £200 and get lessons... can't fault that!
The t20 bats grind me up a bit though, if i hit a six do i really need another bat that makes it go further? If you can't clear the rope.. once again don't change bats... get coaching (or eat spinach) :D
