OK-- here is the thing: nowadays whenever I am pulling the ball it seems to travel to or over Mid-On; it is funny because previously I could simply pick those gaps through mid-wicket at will when I pulled. It is not that I am not timing the ball though--- as the timing is there but the placement is through and over mid-on. Just wondering about what is happening :(
Am I playing too early or am I dragging the ball too much from the off side? Pull is an important shot for me as I normally end up playing the new ball.
Any thoughts?

Bit of both it's my favourite shot and gets me a lot of runs
If you hitting the pull through mid on generally the ball is off side so it's more of a base ball hit but sometimes too early on the ball so if the later is happening I will either wait more or come out of my crease more so bowler comes on to the bat better

sounds like you're staying inside the line of the ball and basically slapping it baseball style over mid-on, instead of getting your body into the line of the ball. this can happen when you're worried about being hit with the ball. concentrate on getting your head in the right place and your body should follow.
-
Whichever way you look at it, it's all about timing. You're hitting it too early in the hitting arc and not hitting it square.
-
Alternatively, you're not rotating your wrists through the shot as much as you maybe used to - the pull (as opposed to hook) is often played by whipping the wrists around the ball to control direction/elevation, and I know I've found as I've gotten older that I can't rotate them as fast as I perhaps used to, which leads to the ball going straighter.
Or, another possibility - are you playing on a slower wicket or against slower bowling all of a sudden?
-
Good points everyone; thanks a ton.
I think it is a mixture of not rotating the wrists and playing outside the line and dragging the shot. Awesome inputs here guys.
Thanks Nick, Rich, Roco :D
Manormanic: spot on about the slower wicket; now that you mention it I suddenly realized that I have been having this 'problem' more on those wickets which are little slower indeed.
So need to wait for the ball more, rotate the wrist better and get my head position correct: everything makes sense.

Just because you're hitting it over mid on though doesn't mean it's a bad shot. If it's scoring you runs and not getting you out then its a good shot. I would suggest that every other piece of advice is relevant too i.e. not getting in line of the ball. Rotating the wrists would only help you play it down though I would have thought.
-
Yep; rotating the wrist does help in playing a safe shot; that is one of the reason because of which I avoid the high hook as I tend to struggle to keep it down.

Lol and if it was just that easy, we would be all playing to a much higher standard lol. Shadowing it would help a lot, then get some-one to throw tennis balls under arm to it, and then get on the bowling machine f\cing slowish shirt bowling. Will take time if you're getting it very wrong all the time. If you;'re still scoring runs with it, then just focus on changing one thing at a time, and I would suggest head position most importantly.

what everyone else has said...!
be careful as you look to rectify the shot making though - in fact I am not sure I would even bother trying to change what you are doing as that may be more hassle than it is worth.

Nope - if you don't rotate the wrists, its a hell of a task to get a middled pull shot through square leg!!

I agree, if the end product is good then there's no problem.

OK, so why does that happen then? you can play a pull shot early, rotate the wrists and still hit it along the ground thru mid on. See what buzz has to say.
-
Think of the physics...... Rotating the wrists downward drags the ball.
-
Ah yeah ok, makes sense then. You can still spank a pull shot square for 6, if you get in the right position.

Not sure that you can, unless you're pulling the ball from well outside the line of off stump?
Why it happens? Well, as VT says, physics, basically. If you think of where you strike a ball when pulling - for me and I suspect most people, out in front of the body above waist height - the rotation/breaking of the wrists is first needed to get the middle of the bat to the ball in good time. In terms of controlling the shot, rolling the wrists over the top allows you to drag the ball down, but you can just as easily rotate them clean through the ball with the bat going from down to up and hit the ball over the top.
As for Buzz's comments, I agree that there may not be much need for technical changes anyway. I always figure that I change things if they are persistently getting me out, but otherwise figure that it is natural for one's game to change/develop over time.

And have a massive bat :D Best way to do it is off a rubbish spinner that you have got to dig one in short by pretending to charge. Then you can hit them for massive sixes!

Difficult to bowl and bat at the same time otherwise this would have been so easy for me :(

im (No Swearing Please) at pulling also i will bassball hit shots over mid on if ball is wide enough
