Title: Batmaking Packages and rental - interest..
Post by: peplow on January 30, 2012, 06:11:57 PM
The pinnacle of cricket bats is having a bat custom made for you, to make it even more special create it yourself and master the skills needed! Something to treasure or use, its something a lot of us want to do but never get around to doing.

To make it accessible and from one easy source I'm toying with the idea of introducing a bat making package including the basic tools needed to handcraft a bat and bits and bobs to finish the bat off and of course the lower grade part made to have a go on!

Lower grade part-made
Spokeshave
Drawknife
Smoothing Plane
Higher grade sandpaper
Bat Wax
Grip
Scuff Sheet

Also looking at introducing a rental scheme for members who either wanna have a crack at one without the huge outlay, or wanna have a go before committing to a set! I will be drawing up a contract. it will involve member details and a returnable deposit, as well as rental fees and postage costs. But hoping to open the art of batmaking to all of us on custombats!

your thoughts??

I reckon it sounds like a great idea. Perhaps you could offer another package that includes a low grade cleft and a g1++ cleft for practice (net) and then match.

Would be fantastic if a workshop could be rented and a master bat maker sourced who would be open to sharing their knowledge. Obviously both would require paying for but what a way of guaranteeing the art of hand making bats continues.

I like this, perhaps there could be an offer of purchasing a g1 part made for a decent price if they enjoy doing the lower grade.

But whats to stop them going somewhere else for it. You could do lots of different packages in theory.

yeah i noted your idea of the rental :) thought it may be more difficult for a retailer focusing on other things to implement to thought i'd take it upon myself to do!

You defiantly will. I sliced the back of my finger open using a drawknife and had to have stitches and my whole finger in a bandage for 4 days. Also, don't test the sharpness of the tools with your fingers.

How do you sharpen your knives. The one I have is very blunt and the oilstone isn't making a lot of difference...

I'll link you up to something I was referred to by a batmaker tomorrow when I'm on comp!

For the record tim's blunt knife wasn't one of mine :D

You'll do better with something with diamond in the mix for sharpening. Especially if its old steel, which my old man says engineers call 'glass hard'. He lent me one of these and it worked a treat. Bit fiddly but worth it when you're sailing through that cleft!

Received my pack in the post today, really excellent stuff, thanks very much!

Going to order one of the sharpeners recommended, which grit would you go for?

Agree about the twine, any ideas where would be best to get some?

Cheers! :D

Irish waxed twine off ebay is best for binding. I have a small sharpening stone with medium grit on one side and fine on the other and it works fine for sharpening.
