Given the concerns raised in a different thread, we'd like to understand how big an issue there is. Please help us by answering honestly.

More than 25 times, occasionally at peak times just can't get on. Getting 404 errors, sometimes just page cannot be displayed.

I'm always logged on but maybe 2 or 3 times during the evening a page will fail to load, give it a few minutes and try again and it's fine.

I'm on the forum all day. Im not getting error messages as much, it's "web page unable to load". Something to do with bandwidth I reckon.

Ive had more unable to load than error message. Are they a combined problem? If it is my broadband (Virgin) then i do apologize and I will stalk Richard Branson and tug his shaggy beard.

Where's the website being hosted? Get on to whoever it is and get it moved somewhere else. There are loads of hosts out there.... and get it put onto a dedicated server. Would cost around £60 a month and can be changed quickly.... within 24 hours at any rate

Sadly it will take a little longer than 24 hours. It's not quite as straightforward due to the original set-up.

I do feel that as non-paying members, we shouldn't really be complaining lol, but it is so frustrating when you have to actually work at work, instead of being able to be on here all day. So much effort!
Title: Re: Forum Performance
Post by: uknsaunders on April 19, 2012, 11:53:25 AM
define your definition of non-paying?

Sponsors pay to be on this forum in the hope/expectation of gaining business from our custom. We indirectly pay for this forum by purchasing from Sponsors. If we cannot get on this forum or read a sponsor topic, then a Sponsor cannot do the level of business he would expect and should in turn by compensated imho.

I know nothing about server hosting but with plenty of sponsors onboard, surely more money should be spent to improve the quality of the service.

You make a good point Nick, a very good point. If people start to stay away because it's too much of a hassle to read any of the topics then forum sponsor's business will diminish no doubt.

Totally agree. I count 28 sponsors at £15 per month. £420 a month should be enough for some decent hosting!

Title: Re: Forum Performance
Post by: Tom on April 19, 2012, 01:13:27 PM
It would cost approx £10 a month to move this to superior hosting. £20 a month and it would be near bulletproof.

If finances are an issue, then I'll consider funding it - Leo and I set up this forum and it'd be ridiculous for it to die from lack of financial investment.
Title: Re: Forum Performance
Post by: Simmy on April 19, 2012, 01:15:37 PM
i dont think money would be the issue tom?

not with all the sponsors i recon something is wrong with the DB and there scared to move it?
Title: Re: Forum Performance
Post by: tim2000s on April 19, 2012, 02:31:03 PM
Simmy is partially correct. Moving it is a reasonably large undertaking thanks to the various mods that have taken place over the years and the amount of data in the database. I am inclined to believe that it isn't the site itself that is causing us the problems, rather that the hosting service on which we sit is shared amongst far more accounts than most would reasonably believe is sensible.

We are looking at the alternative options, and are in the process of copying the site and setting up a test host to make sure that migration is not going to be an issue. Please be assured that work is going on to try and deal with these issues and that we admin are extremely frustrated by what is going on as well. As we make progress we will keep you informed and will be asking members to help us QA any moves to make sure nothing is broken.

It's possible that your ISP DNS has not been properly set-up (which we have no control over). I've seen this happen once.

Happens for me first thing every morning and did around 5pm today.
The one in the morning, i am convinced it is the DNS on my laptop, I think it tries to use cached DNS on the laptop but eventually decides to use the ISP .
Tip for anyone, force you PC/Laptop to get new DNS, do a flush.

Windows PC's
Click Start,
Click Run,
In the box that opens type "cmd"
New window opens, that is black with white writing.
In this box type "ipconfig /flushdns"
this should reset your DNS and force the PC to get the new addresses
Doesnt always solve it but might help a few

Havent been able to get on all day, finally did a DNS lookup and was able to get on using this address

http://184.154.5.91/cbforum/index.php

Seems to be issues with my ISP's DNS settings.

Have added a google DNS server to my IP settings and this is working well.
google DNS server address :
8.8.8.8

Might be worth putting this on FB and Twitter for people
