With all the GM love recently on the forum, I thought I'd ask a question thatbhas been bugging me for a while. Why do people love the Purist so much? I've never used one and don't understand....
-
For me, the best all round bat for front foot and back foot shots. The balance was supreme and pick-up barely noticeable, combined with awesome playability.

I knew you would reply pretty quickly when you saw this. This topic was made for you to express your love!

Clicked refresh and saw Purist. I was in..
-
Well enjoy it lol
-
Being slightly cynical, I thought it got loads of love because Michael Vaughan used one, really...
-
any pics of it. Not used one personally.

This was a bat I never owned and lusted for greatly. Everyone I saw, picked up played extremely well. Lovely balance and light pick up and being a traditional profile guy I was hooked instantly. Front foot players loved it, back foot too, just so meaty down the blade it looked so easy to hit boundaries with. Who needs big edges when you've got a high spine and long long middle :) I got images of the purist to base my custom pack bat on 8) just wish I had got one. And the purist original softs. WOOF!!!
-
no bat can ever be the greatest ever, as everyone has different tastes
I think a more suited question would be who made the greastest bat you've ever owned.....
I think the answers may be very similar

This is the Purist II:

Loved the Purist II too. Not as good as the original beast but a very good bat nonetheless
-
How much would you pay to get your hands on one? Was it you who got that eBay one for £50?
-
I always wish I'd owned one, a few guys at my club still have them, and they look decent sticks.

No unfortunately I have absolutely no money, hence selling my PS3.
It would depend on the use of the bat, would pay £70 for an 808 at my club (if I had the money to spend). I'm practically the only person to use it. The owner got 76 runs in 27 innings with it and I got 285 in 3 innings.

I had an awesome Purist Original back in the day, all round performance was excellent with a very forgiving middle. Sadly broke beyond repair after just 1 season along with quite a few other GMs round my way which has put me off since :(
-
Scored my first hundred with a mates long handled Purist 909 and haven't used one since.....don't know why lol

i used to use GM autograph originals back in the day, i couldn't get on with the purist when it came out, seemed to toe heavy in comparison for me, may be i just got unlucky with the ones i picked up, i wanted to love it but i couldn't, ended up swaping to mjolnirs instead
-
I loved the purist as like most guys say it was good of both the front and back foot and it had a middle nearly the full length of the bat. Small edges fantastic balance and a great pick up were characteristics of the few I used just and they just felt like a wand in the hands when batting. The gloves were great too as were the pads in original and the LE form. The LE gloves GM market now are basically the same as the old Purist LE gloves + a few minor alterations. I hope GM have the balls and nous to bring out an up to date Modern purist style bat as older cricketers would buy just for nostalgia I think. Also Vaughny used one in the 2005 ashes which was the cricket series on television both terrestrial and satellite with the highest ever viewing figures.

Likewise; loved the Cannon when that was around and had a size 5 Skipper when I were a wee nipper, but the Purist seemed too...ephemeral somehow.
-
So ephemeral they named it twice.
The name is great, that helps.
-
true, makes you sound like a player even if you really aren't!
-
I think the Aussie ones had a slightly different profile...
This is/was my Purist II Original LE

That picture demonstrates nicely what Michael Vaughan said about changes in bat sizes since "his" ashes.

Needs a new grip, but picks up well and feels perfectly knocked in when bouncing a ball off it. Lovely piece of wood for £50.

With grains like that it wouldnt be graded a 909 theese days either.
Do love the Purist.

What do you reckon it would get? I'd say an Original, given some I've seen.

The missus Grandads Hero 606 Has better grains, It's a jaffa!
I'd say its rated on performance and today would be a 707 or 808 at the very most.

Thought I might join in on the Purist love in :) My purist original (academy), pimped up with some vantage stickers

A little bit of prop placement or actual design???
-
Link don't work Streaky :(
-
lovely bat that - I would say both Dr Streaky!

That! I want that!
Btw Tim's Purist may pass for an Original nowadays. Team mate bought an Icon Original last year with 6 fairly straight grains but it goes well.
-
Took it down to nets tonight and just about everyone used it. And I remembered why I didn't like the Cannon. Everyone else was fine with it and I don't think I found the middle once. The balance was fine but I just did not get on with it all. I'm obviously no Michael Vaughan...
I can't believe how much I wasn't impressed!
-
I'll try and get a picture of my mates purist 808 at the weekend. Pretty sure it had about 13 perfectly straight grains. Can't believe some of the stuff they sell these days as original and original LE.
-
What do people think of the edge - a little bit too straight??
-
A bit of bow could work...

Makes little difference to me. I tend to hit along the ground so whether there is bow or not doesn't matter too much (boundary on the ground gives no grounds for being caught!). Should the Purist has edges that follow the Spine shape? No. GM should understand the principles behind the SAF offset edges. Makes for fantastic pick up and a long middle!

Isn't this enough bow???

that's a Purist II though isn't it?
-

Yes it is... It was my attempt at going for a lighter bat... Word of warning, going from a 3lber to a 2lb6oz doesn't work..lol
-
caught at cover a lot?

Caught more in general
-

Personally I think they're fine (obviously) but wouldn't be devastated if a subtle bow was introduced. Please please please keep a rounded face as opposed to the flat face trend which has crept in.
-
I have 4 x Purist shape bats being delivered tomorrow. I honestly cant wait to get a few knocked in and used. I still think that it was the best cricket bat shape, and arguably, will be for years to come.
-
I still have my Purist Original, although it does have the Icon stickers on! But very decent bat indeed!

Just searching the interweb for the Purist and came across this post. Have to agree that I don't think there has been a greater 'all round' cricket bat since.
-
Its up there, but I prefer the Original Millichamp and Hall shape. Both great bats though.
I still have a Purist from about 2004

If you ever look to sell let me know :)

id have to say yes!
one of the most gutting moments ive seen was when a lad at an old club of mine had an original shape purist 909, had 2 hundreds on the bounce was cruising through the 70s in a third game and dug out a yorker and put a crack straight up the middle of the blade!! it was one of the nicest looking bats ive seen and went like the clappers!!!! his face when he called for another bat was pure shock, he was out 5ish runs later!!!
always wanted one as well as the maxi from the same time (2003/4/5)
-
I had one back as a colt in academy. thing went like the clappers and I have wanted another ever since
perhaps it's time to ask the king of ping @ H4L if he can construct such a beast!
