Title: Damaged edge
Post by: Bruce on March 09, 2012, 04:09:24 PM
Afternoon gents, A few weeks back I was having my 1-1 coaching in the main hall at the local cricket centre.
We were looking at my best scoring area, and maneuvering the ball around through cones etc.
we then did the same with spin but with cricket balls not Bola balls.
I played a cross the line, still with a strait bat but the ball gripped and I mistimed my shot....  :( :(

Any ideas on how to draw out the wood again?

Thanks Dave

Something to do with steam works I think, not sure what exactly though.

I would just leave it or at most just a light sanding. Looks fine.

just put it down to the wear and tear a bat will experience due to use....give it a light sand but its something you will have to live with

I will have to agree with Bull Dog and Ayrtek here. Less you mess with it the better. It looks fine mate I cant see it impacting the performance in anyway or causing more damage. I had something similar on my bat from last season but the willow still goes and I just put it down to wear and tear.  :D. Saying that I can understand your point..

Thanks for the advice gents, It's my new bat and I was proper angry with myself when I did it.
Have sanded it down a bit and looks better already.

Tonight I've got 1-1 coaching first then training with a new team.

If the ball is marking the wood like that, even if it is on the edge,  you haven't done enough knocking in.

You don't knock in the edges!

Have a nice training session mate..and all the best with the game this season..You will forget about all this once you score the first ton with that beast  :D..

What you can do is very gently wet the area and then briefly hold it over a steaming kettle. This draws the wood back out.

However, it can make the willow blister slightly (like if you've ever left a bat out in the rain) you can sand away the light blistering.

Thanks Johnny. I'll give it a go.

Liam; looking at moving to Wimborne.
Good set up& ground etc.

Nets was great! Got a few odd looks. New bloke with loads of kit they had never seen or heard of!
Only got pinned once, their quickest bloke banged one in short and squared me up and caught me on the index finger. Hardly felt a thing!
Ayrtek Elite gloves doing the job.

place the edge over a steaming kettle for 20-30 seconds, possibly longer and then wipe down. Give it a while to dry off and fine sand.

I had this happen to a GM hero 909........but more on the face and due to a cheap and nasty ball............... steamed it out and then next session hit in the same area and the edge split reight through.  My advice is like the others leave it and may be even run some tape over it.

good point - wasn't going to recommend steaming on the face, back areas and edges towards the back of the bat only!

Similar things happened to me today... Combination of cheap ball and bad shot...

What should I do? Use some tape and facing sheet and get on with life or get it repaired? Fear is where it is it may happen again...

It might sand out if you're really worried about it.

don't worry about it mate, its only because its on the heatwood and its harder than sapwood. happened to mine as i didn't knock it in. just get a scuff sheet and some edge tape and it'll be fine.

I must admit I didn't knock it in very much. I'm knocked the surrounding edge in lightly and it's made the crack seem smaller.

Will be appling edge tape and scuff sheet.

Thanks for the reassurances :)

Sand it lightly, then apply superglue to the crack (if it is still there.) Should be fine after.

Superglue? Really? that would be quite brittle?!  ???

Really. It's a really small crack and PVA glue is too thick to get in deep enough. I have used superglue to fix several cracks like this myself, never had a problem.

If you absolutely must use PVA, dilute it with some water so that it seeps into the crack.
