Title: Who will replace Pietersen in the one day stuff?
Post by: Liam-SCCC on May 31, 2012, 12:41:28 PM
Who will come in at the top of the order? Will Kieswetter move back up there, leaving room for Buttler down the order. Or someone else down the order.

Or will they go for someone new at the top?

What do you reckon?

Rory Hamilton-Brown for me.
bowls some off spin, good fielder and comes in at the top of the order for the best one-day side around the counties at the moment.

RHB has the benefit of playing on the best batting track in England atm.

which is similar to international tracks

he has also scored a stack of runs this season on some terrible tracks.

Very true. He is the outstanding candidate imo with not many other opening batsmen making a real claim for the spot

Luke Wright perhaps? Didn't do too well when he initially broke into the international scene but seems to have rethought his game and come back an improved batsman, plus he can bowl and over or two aswell.

RHB has done very well, and I think two of his Surrey top-order team-mates could also be in with a shout, Jason Roy can give the ball a good whack and Davies is a better wicket-keeper and batsman than Kieswetter imo.

Will they go for the new order batsmen? Or new middle order with Kieswetter up there?

And he blocked out against Somerset when Surrey needed ~100 runs in a session with 4 wickets in hand... Don't think he's quite as explosive as KP.

I'd like to say that there won't be a player that slots into KP's place but instead a couple of changes which will, overall, fill the void left by the man.

I'd like to see more of this Ben Stokes lad, Bowls a bit and hits it miles apparently him to bat at 5/6 and have Keiswetter opening up with Cook

Can we have a link to that game? You said session which makes it sound like a CC match, which has nothing to do with the one day team..

RHB is quite an explosive one day batsman, that's why he is number 3 in one of the best Pro 40 and 20/20 teams around.. He may not have the same creative flair that Pietersen has but he certainly knows how to strike a ball and how to score runs at a high run rate.

Indeed it was a CC game but I'm just getting at Rory's lack of intent at times and just saying how Pietersen would have gone after the total.

Urm RH-B batted out to save the game with the tail - this has nothing to do with his ability as a possible ODI opener.
this showed he has finally learned to adapt his game to all the conditions. Previously he would have gone for the target and may or may not have got the runs...!!

That's under completely different conditions to a OD or T20, if he'd gone for the runs he'd of risked losing the game, so that shows great maturity, I think he'd be a very good fit.

I'd take that Bairstow guy, keep with him and ditch Kieswetter and get that Ayrtek dude James in.

Alex Hales?

Not sure who to replace Pietersen - possibly RHB. Would like to see Davies in there for Kieswetter, also Luke Wright in there - done very well with the T20 stuff overseas and is a very underrated bowler.

Cook, Kieswetter/Davies, Trott, RHB, Morgan, Bairstow/Buttler, Patel, Bresnan, Broad, Swann, Finn.

That would be my side without Pietersen, having Bairstow in the team also allows you to potentially put in another pure batsman or an all-rounder instead of Kieswetter/Davies.

Depends who else survives - I see the strongest side as  featuring:

Cook
x
Bell
Bopara
x
Bairstow
Patel
Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Anderson/Finn

So Kieswetter probably takes on eof the two slots to keep.  That means either Hales to open or Taylor to bat five I guess....

Firstly, Bairstow can keep to a decent standard, so you could infact just put in two pure batsmen instead. Secondly, Bell averages 34.04 at a SR of 73, Bopara averages 30.32 at a SR of 75 while Trott averages 48.31 at a SR of nearly 78. So why would you say Bell and Bopara should be put in the team instead of Trott? I could understand replacing him for someone who scores runs at a fairly fast rate(RHB, Buttler etc.) but to replace one of out highest scoring batsmen with people who average less runs at a lower strike rate is just crazy..

James Taylor very much put his name in the hat with that innings, the only problem I have is the amount of time it took for him to get his eye in and really start scoring, batting in the lower middle order for England means he wont always get 50 odd balls to play himself in so we might need someone who can score runs from the first ball.

Cook (c)
Davies (w)
Bell
Bairstow
Buttler
Wright
Patel
Broad
Swann
Dernbach
Finn

Would be exciting to see something like that.

Owais Shah played very well in the IPL I thought, decent fielder, decent bat, can score from the word go

Has Ben Stokes dropped out of the picture at the minute? Wouldn't have him in my team but he's played a few games and must be high in the pecking order

Cook
Hales
Trott
Bell
Taylor
Bairstow
Patel
Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Finn

After all this time that he's been showing his ability, I still can't believe that Trotty isn't a nailed on cert for every ODI, don't understand what the stigma with him is. I'd personally have:

ODI

Cook (c)
Davies (w)
Trott
Bell
Morgan
Bairstow
Patel
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Finn

Bit risky having Anderson and Finn but they are quality ODI bowlers, just gotta trust the batsmen to deliver as they are both specialist 11s! Would definitely have Matt Prior back in the ODI and was always a fan of him but doesn't look like he gets a look in any more, Woakes could be considered if he was back fit

T20

Kieswetter (w)
RHB
Taylor
Bopara
Morgan
Buttler
Patel
Broad (c)
Swann
Dernbach
Finn

Bit stuck for ideas on a specifically T20 to be honest! So much more difficult to pick a team on consistent T20 form as it's so hit and miss

Bopara has had a decent run of form for England in the ODIs, and in great nick now.  He's also a very useful, underrated one day bowler, so although his batting average still isn't as high as Trott, he should - for my money - be a dead cert in both formats.  A little surprised only a couple of you guys seem to agree!

I'd love to see Buttler get another chance.  Carberry is knocking on the door as well but whether he could perform at international level is another question.

I do know someone who has played against Buttler and other County players, and when I asked him who was the hardest hitter of anyone he'd played against, Buttler was just about top of his list! Definite sore hands when fielding against him!! I'd love to see him given more f a chace too, but I'm sure his time will come!

Loved to see buttler play but I doubt it.

I'll through another into the mix, nash.
Top run scorer in the cb40 last season

Yer Jos hits it seriously hard, and its effortless how easy he can put his hands through the ball.   Having played against him a few times, I can second the sore hands!  Another good season or two and he will certainly feature.
