One of our new team members has this 10 year old laver & wood bat. Its a big bat almost 3 lbs and still going strong.
There is no crack but just the surface chipping out
I removed the face sheet and just cleaned the glue off from the sheet. What's the best way to work on this bat ?
I can sand the face but i am afraid if a big piece chips out from the surface
here are the pics:

Looks like it definitely needs a drop of glue in some areas. You could maybe rub some into the worst cracked areas then sand lightly once dry. However, on a bat of this vintage and provenance maybe it would be best sent off for a professional re-furb putting the responsibility on the re-furbers.
-
If it's still going well I'm not sure anything other than a light sand and new antiscuff is needed.
-
a bat of that quality is worth looing after professionally though...
-
Get it refurbed professionally if anyone can do in where you are, otherwise sand with a medium sandpaper and then switch to fine sandpaper, clean the face with damp face cloth then rub glue in if its still required otherwise oil/ dry and scuff sheet and then a light knocking in..
-
I am in US , so don't have any local bat repairs professionals. Looking for all the expert advice from this forum.
-
suck it up and send it back to Laver mate, it'll be worth it!
-
Get some watery PVA glue or water some down, pour it into all the cracks all over the bat making sure all the cracks are filled, then bing the whole bat with string very tightly to make sure the cracks stay down. Leave it overnight, take the string off and sand. As seen on Beach Cricket's blog (link) (http://wieldingwhitewillow.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/glue-glue-and-more-glue.html)
-
As Joe said or cut up a grip and use that to "clamp" the raised willow in place. or do what the master does and use parcel tape to "clamp".
-
P.S
I'd say you've had your monies worth so I'd gracefully retire that and buy a new one :D
-
That 'ps' had crossed my mind too!
-
Another option could be to send the bat off to one of the skilled batmakers on this forum, and have a nice copy made in nice new willow. That way the old faithful can be retired gracefully and a new identical bat can be knocked in and played in over Winter time?

Going against JM, I don't like using tape as it doesn't give that much pressure over a large area and the stuff it leaves is a pain to remove.

Hi there,
I would love to work on this bat myself if possible. Therefore we would only need you to pay for the return shipping and the work would be completely free of charge. Please email me at James@laverwood.com and we can go from there.
Thanks, James
-
That's what I call customer service.
Now get back to finishing my bat ;)

James - Thanks for the generous offer. Send you an email from my gmail id.

I would love to see what this ends up looking like if it does go back to Laver and Wood. Could be an amazing advert for them....like the RM Williams adverts where they use a pair of 70 year old boots in the pics!
-
Awesome service! Really tempting me towards getting a Laver & Wood as my next bat!
-
Do it.
It's worth it.
-
great customer service, perhaps sometimes it's worth paying a bit more for a bat for after sales
some of our larger brands should take note

Hey, make sure you get some pictures up once it's back!
James, perhaps you could give an account of what you'll be doing to the bat once it's back with you?
Would love to see that!
Thanks in anticipation,
David

awesome what an offer too good to refuse
-
Thanks guys.... It's our genuine pleasure to work on bats like this! Nothing better than getting an old favourite back to its former glories. Will do our best with photos/information if it is ok with the customer!
Amit - about to email you back now.
Thanks a lot
-
Why can't some of the bigger brands be this generous? That's a fabulous offer!
-
Shipped the bat today to new zealand. James - you are more than welcome to post the pics here after you do your magic on the bat :)

I am adding the pictures sent by andy of the work done and that looks good
Will add a couple more pics when we have the bat here
