They are light and pretty indestructable and I believe used in street cricket.
I guess it's just a market for a cheap bat which will last for years and play in the street!

As Pete said they are for street cricket, in Pakistan tape-ball cricket is very very common and everyone plays it. So these are for street circuit.

No worries, they look very Pakistanish. Wristband, palm, stitching etc is quite Pakistanish.

I left out the normal range of the lovely Chase bats as they are the same. BUT I had to get lots of photos of the gorgeous FLC (Four Leaf Clover) top of the range bat which will be a gorgeous profile that is the nicest special willow that Dan can get his splintered hands on!
The stickers (which looked gorgeous!!) were prototype stickers so may be changed slightly.

Anyone else notice that Boom Boom arrogance has a Copy lathe marks on it where as other models do not? Sticker on the back of the Toe on accelerator look like its giving you the finger  :o

Its marks from a polisher going on experience but I believe they are made on a cnc

It's not the machine defining the profile anyway. The question you should ask is "Do GM have anyone capable of designing a model with an offset edge and programming the CNC with it?".

I couldn't agree more, one of the lads I coached over the summer bought one of the top of the range sabre bats (I think yellow, unless he was fibbing) and the willow looked shocking, the pick-up was horrible and the middle was not very long, or responsive. They also do the branding thing on them, and it looked like some-one had had 2 or 3 attempts at it. Would not have payed £200+ for it thats for sure :(

Just look at the application of the back sticker n the 'top of the range' bat!

I did actually speak to Sabre at some length, and they are amazingly happy with the direction they are going in.

They believe to have strong and individual brand that works for them and have been outselling many rivals locally.

it is, on so many levels - the sheer weight of yellow is, erm, alarming and the stickering just looks cheap, with huge amounts of bare black space on there...

I had a long chat with them and I think they said they were based in the Somerset shop. I was gob smacked when they told me the top of the range bat was £250, I had assumed they were cheap asian imports the branding was that bad.

At a time when there is such a packed marketplace in terms of big manufacturers producing good gear and smaller companies fighting for the boutique market, you'd wonder why anyone would think that that gear would sell at those prices.  I can only imagine what would be made of that on Dragons Den!

They were selling them in the swalec stadium a couple of months back for £320! I'm not sure it was the top model either!

I don't think you can be too scathing about their business model, after all it works for them and appears they have been operating for a number of years. They appear to have a niche that they are happy with but possibly want to break out of, hence the stand at the show.

Actually this guy said he only launched last season. He set up totally on his own and apparently spent 3 years developing his shapes and pad design!

Good point, well made.

But still Fugly and the moment you move into that bigger arena you are judge by comparison to your rivals... it may get you so far but once you are exposed to a more experienced audience it may stutter or fall away.

Hi guys

I have just started reading this and am a little disappointed by the feedback.
The quality of the Sabre bats on show at the Lords show were not too bad - granted they seemed overpriced for someone starting out and trying to establish themselves. And I'm sure they were hand picked as decent bats.
I know that the stickers don't look great in everyones opinion - in fact they are not very nice at all! But rather than knocking the brand, how about trying to come up with some constructive criticism? There are some very bright people on here with some very good ideas! So let's see some better designs and ideas?  8)

I did have a chat with the guy and spent a good 30mins with him on the phone and offered some of my time but he's very happy with what he has.

This does seem a bit mean....I'm not keen on the branding but this guy has got off his backside, produced a range of cricket equipment and brought it to market. He deserves respect for that alone. So what if things need tweaking here and there?....it's amazing what difference a set of stickers makes isn't it?  ;)

If they had Cadbury-esque stickers on the gear I bet people would be cooing about it, whatever the perceived quality.....  :D

I agree, and it foiled my dastardly plan.

After hearing all the initial chatter about them after the show... i did think how better to get noticed for your work than to  assist something that has been torn to shreds. A bit of a nip, tuck and re-skin works wonders when all we are talking about here is colours and shapes.

Thats why i quite like what Hosk put because lots of people with opinions but how many would help or give up time?  ;)

I may have been a bit negative about Sabre, but I'm just being honest, and from my point of view, I want to go to a show like Lord's and see lovely new kit that I am interested in investing in for 2013.  Having guys like Sabre take space that should and could have been used by the likes of Puma and Willostix irritates me a bit. 

Let's face it, Lord's is the cream of the crop - and the biggest cricket trade show, so I just expected the very best there.  In most cases it was, but Sabre were an anomaly for me...

Pedals - yep, I agree too! If the bats are at least half decent, then apply a lovely set of stickers and the brand suddenly becomes twice as attractive!

And IJC, I am not knocking anyone for knocking the branding - it is possibly the worst I've seem emerge from the UK market! And you could argue that those stickers deserve all the criticism they are getting, and then some!  >:(

to the best of my knowledge the shop at the Swalec sent back the Sabre bat, it didnt sell, it had been there quite some time. i wasnt that impressed with it tbh.

There's a difference between expressing an opinion and having a bit of a rant. Stickers/pricing suck but that can be fixed and Pete is right, we should give constructive feedback if possible. I'd be interested on the RRP v actual cost to the retailer. Do they offer higher margins than say Boom Boom? That would get them floor space in a show room.

To be honest, Nick, I didn't even stop by their stand, just glanced at them in passing, so I don't have a price list.  I would imagine their margins are exactly the same as everyone else though, but would be interested to hear the figures if anyone has them?

Regarding constructive feedback, I would normally only give that if the product is, in my opinion, nearly there, but has a few minor faults that I can identify.  In this case, the whole thing is faulty for me, so I'm struggling to be constructive - is "start again from scratch" constructive?!

What i got back was a bit of an "elevator" conversation. A little bit of bluster but hey we all do that...

The details on sales if accurate represent a growth but im not so sure with their claim to be locally outselling and a preferred choice to one of the largest UK brands. Is this just down to carrying lower end stock in comparison to your home brand alternative.

im not going to deny i love it when someone gets picked on for things like this as it allows me to go all Gok Wan and create, polish or reinvent with dramatic results. It's not very often i get feedback that i would consider to be serious.

The hard bit for me to take was being blind to whats beyond the next step... I have and still work globally and you know from experience that you have to have a very open view... if your experience is limited never be to proud or afraid to ask.

I think a few lads on here would testify to being able to ask a question or two and I'll always try my best to give an honest answer... with Sabre however i get the feeling they no best.

It's not just the stickers that put me off - rarely do you see so many blemishes on supposed "top end" bats.

The Sabre range had a brownish stickering on the last years Wisden gear guide / bat review and they were a miles better than what they currently have. I think the " DON " , county pro who reviewed had something nice to say about them. On a different note anyone know who he actually is ?.

The bats all looked exactly the same standard despite whichever grade they are, and the creative is poocakes.

However, I think it's a bit rough for people without their own brand to criticise someone who's got off his (No Swearing Please) and is running his own brand.

Every start-up is a work in progress - I wish I had his money and balls to start my own brand - however I also wish he had my artistic talent to make it look good!

This im not so sure mate... next you will be telling me i can't critique the new Aston as i dont run a car company...

Criticising for the hell of it is a hell of it is almost a habit for some granted, but it's down to the intelligent to wade through the comments and find something or anything of value... in this case however, this kind of typifies the point raised with him. Once you are in a position to be compared by being next to others you'll soon learn about your "identities" strengths.... the chatter may seem a little puerile but even to the most dedicated brand engineer it tells a valuable story...

I've spent a few weekends selling at SCS on 2 of their sale events, and Sabre has always sold well - although that was with the older maroon stickers. Perhaps that was because it was a Somerset brand, and the shop had been pushing it more due to presumably high margins.

For all his worth though, Kevin has run a cricket shop for the past 7 years, distributed a brand nationally to retailers and is now giving his own brand a go. He's been there and done it in the industry, perhaps the gear isn't the best looking on the market - but at £250 for a cricket bat handmade in England it's not exactly a rip-off.

I'm not a massive fan of the graphics, but they're sticking very much with what worked in their own experience.

There are some very talented people out there that make fabulous bats to rival what is perceived to be the best in the world. Yet unless you dress them up for the magpies they won't get looked at.

I'm not complaining as it gives me work and an opportunity to work in an arena i love. But i will admit to finding a little sadness when it comes to the true hand crafted items... why cover up something like willow when it is truly a natural beauty.

I'm somewhat tainted by chat and time spent with podshavers from James through to Andy... but i can see why it hurts them when people bang on about labels rather than the thing that matters. But in this very polarised view of the wider spectrum... we continue to make things shine, sparkle and fizz with elegant and articulate designs... it keeps you happy and the batmaker in business.

Your opinions count, but i'll pick and choose carefully whose i act upon..  ;)

Not sure I can agree here with you Paul as if you look at some of the kook players lorimers puts up on eBay they are awful, as was my gray nicolls oblivion players!

see both sides of this - there are certainly a lot of people, though not so much on here, who want ultimo bling and player-sponsorship "credibility" from their gear.  For me, and I suspect a lot of people will agree with me on this one, I buy a bat for the quality of the willow and of the design/shaping.  Labelling is referred to so much for two reasons - because, when done well (Newbery, Black Cat, M&H) it adds a classy, understated touch to the bat, and because when done badly, it looks downright bloody horrible...

What I want is to know the bat I've bought is going to rebound satisfactorily, so the maker has pressed and shaped it to the best of his ability and will stand behind it and say "It's fabulous" (well maybe except for my soon to arrive Dynadrive, but that's an emotional purchase, and we all know Gray Nics will say that anyway...). Ultimately if you buy a Sabre, and it goes, but you hate the stickers, you can always remove them.

But then there comes the other side of the equation. We all know just how much of the game is mental, and if you find a Sabre with a lovely shape that picks up perfectly, and you decide to buy it, but in the back of your mind is that little bit of "I don't know if I really like the stickers", will it affect your play? Does this tiny chink mean that with not 100% confidence in your bat, you will find yourself using it poorly and ultimately deciding that "Sabre bats are rubbish", in spite of the quality of the manufacture or willow?

After working with you I now understand that branding means alot more then I ever though it ought to, I might not like it but the truth of the matter it does... 

A bit like having a larger edge, it shouldn't matter but it does

I'll have to close my eyes as in my opinion it is a crap tribute to one of the best bat makers the world has ever seen... and I've heard some great great stories about him!  :o

Thanks for taking the time to post all those pic's of next years gear for us to see. Really pleased Newbery have bought back the Cadbury stickers.

Saw that Sabre stuff at a recent trip to get a couple of bats fro next season and it was really mixed in terms of quality. In fact some of the lesser models looked and felt better than the top model. Fairly expensive as well. 

That Salix gear looks amazing fir next year as well :D

I think I'm the opposite! Love the Cadburys but not keen on the JN. Although some take a bit of getting used to?

Newbery seem to be trying to diversify into other audiences when they don't really need to as everyone knows their class and quality of equipment. Just trying to target the 'Boom Boom market' I guess

Wow, I thought I'd seen it all! I guess Joe Public wants those artificial straight grains, although it doesn't mean squat. Well, GN had a scuff sheet with fake grains, but this seems to go a step beyond with the branding.

Btw, why would Newbery send 5* bats to a trade show instead of all SPS? Thought they'd want to display only their very best wares...

If its hand picked by Tim Keeley as the best willow Newbery have then I see the prestige, I think the Cenkos package could have a few more extras, like a 5 star bat to net with. Similar to the Laver Signature. 1000 beans is a lot for any bat.

Exactly - James Laver provides a Private Bin as a net bat to go with his top package - also a quality case and lots of other extras! Not quite sure, but I believe that the Cenkos is simply the bat and the case!

To all the bat makers out there is there anything Newbery or TK could do to this bat to justify the price tag over say a SPS?? Do they do that much fine sanding, pressing etc to justify a £1000 price tag or is it really just for the really rich to say ''look at me i have a Cenkos worth £1000''?

It may look nice but i dont think it is the best looking bat in the world espically for a £1000

Don't forget Newbery was acquired by a equity fund and they need to make some money back and quickly - who says it has to be the best bat to demand a £1000 price tag.

Your can market a donkey for a horse if your use the right words.

TK makes some of the best bats, but £1000 is ridiculous - I don't see any value for money.

Simple principal to generate want by making something very LE - like GM player edition bats or Legends etc. publicise made in very limited numbers and people want to have it.

Same as iPhone v HCT or Samsung. Is iPhone better than others - no, but the aura and want has been successfully created by clever marketing

The Cenkos exists for 2 reasons:

1) There exists x% of people, that love cricket (bats), have access to that sort of disposable income, and appreciate the value of things that cost a great deal (city traders etc)

2) It gets Newbury some very easy simple PR - a flick-of-the switch decision that generates a lot of easy (out of nowhere) conversations/column inches about the brand.

The bats are probably just SPS's with the best grains.

They do look quite good, far better than those other x-tec ones which are awful, when I started playing again I bought one cheap from sports direct. I'm sure its not just my expanding gut but I found it didn't stay in place at all and the straps kept coming undone as the velcro sections move round towards the back of the pad.

I think it's the angle I took the picture at!!

And Alvaro...I was very impressed with the Slaz gear. In past years, I can take them and leave them. But this year...great improvement!

Honestly? I'd have a top V600 over that shape for less money. If you want laser-etching, Willostix do it at a price you can afford.
